Fine O'clock
We took a taxi west of 307 this evening to the highly acclaimed Wine O'clock restaurant. We met up with our friends who were regulars at this spot in addition to possibly being winos. The place is smallish but very stylish, with a huge wine selection and comfortable setting. Located at 90 Ave, close to the exasperating and always crowded immigration office, I wondered if it was still swarming with anxious locals and wannabe expats at 18:30. Maddening place. But I digress.
We were hoping to be entertained by a highly recommended female Latin vocalist who performs Monday nights. While waiting for her arrival, we began ordering bottle of Mexican wines and food. My considerate yet sometime super sassy wife requested the garlic citrus shrimp app which we shared with the table. After copious glasses of delicious wine, the Shrimp dish made it to our table served in a sizzling hot platter along with small potatoes, corn and other veggies. The food disappeared as quickly as it appeared as it was very tasty and perfectly prepared. I wished there was more left.
As we selected our entrees, a long -nailed young man entered the restaurant dragging his large harp behind him. As he set up to play, I looked around to see where the Spanish singer might be. She was a no show. As he began fingering the harp's strings to the tune of Moon River, I tried to remember the last time I listened to the subtle sounds of this instrument. Maybe Easter brunch at some stiff country club back in Dallas a decade or so ago.
Soon our dinner was served. My uber laidback yet sometimes ultra-squirrelly esposa supreme went with the guajillo shrimp pizza, while I tried the omnipresent pork belly tacos. I find most of these belly tacos in PDC usually dry or bland, so I was extremely pleased when I took my first bite of these deep and satisfying small tacos. The she-devil's pizza was also delightful as I snagged a piece for myself. In addition, all our friends voice equal pleasure with their dinner choices as well. Even without the now mysterious and still missing fem singer, Wine O'clock is a winner and worth the trip. read more
