My "Paint Your Pet" painting after an evening of Wine and Design.
    Elizabeth F.

My SIL gave me a birthday outing gift for a small group of us to go to Wine & Design's Paint Your Pet night (classes and themes vary). While this is not something I probably would have done if left up to my own devices, I have to say that I really enjoyed myself. As part of the fun, there are three artists who roam the room to offer help and advice as you work to create your own "masterpiece". It is a relaxing environment to try to do something new. To add to a relaxed environment, there is wine, beer and a light fare menu to enjoy (my friend kept calling this place "Drink and Draw"). You can even bring your own wine (no corkage fee) to enjoy and get your creative juices flowing. P.S. Check out my pictures of our paintings!

The host Jon is so nice and comedic! He is a great entertainer. This place is great for mommy and me, bachelorette parties, date night... any reason to come.

Kinsey hosted an amazing class today, we had a great time at the couples date night painting. She was warm and welcoming, and we had so much fun painting together for our anniversary.

If you haven't had a chance to go to Wine and Design, you really should, it's well worth it! I have to say that one of my childhood friends is one of the artists and I was more than excited to get instruction from such great talent and enjoy a glass (or three) of wine while doing so. So my friend and I signed up for the "Crabs" class taught by Claire Wall several weeks ago. Slowly but surely, the date creeped up on us and was here before we knew it! We got there around 6:15pm, signed in, grabbed an apron, found a set-up up front, and poured a glass of wine. When you walk into the classroom/studio/gallery, everything has already been set-up for you so you don't have to do a thing. You will notice on the canvas that there is a very faint outline of what you will be working on. Do not fret, as there is A LOT more that went into it after basically painting within the lines. Shading, blending, all these words i'm unfamiliar with made art magic! Wine and Design also offers some lite fare along with wine, beer, and i'm pretty sure I saw champagne. Oh but wait, there's more. Due to the new Virginia laws, you are allowed to bring youy own bottle of wine. No corkage fee, no nothing! You can't bring food but wine is "A-ok!" So if you aren't in the mood to spend any additional money than what you paid for the class (usually $35), this is a great way to spend the evening with a friend or friends! I can't wait to go back and bring out the "arteeeest" inside. Take care & paint the town!

My mother and I with our finished paintings--loved it!

I took my mother to Wine and Design for her birthday last night and we had an absolute BLAST!! We were really not sure what to expect and neither of us are artistic at all...but the artist made it extremely easy to follow and everyone's pictures were a little bit different. We brought our own wine and got 2 small plates from the extremely reasonably priced menu. We couldn't believe 2 hours went by so fast! We've already talked about going back again! If you're unsure about doing this...DO IT! So much fun- a memory my mother and I will always share :)

I had an amazing time at Wine & Design last night. I have zero creative skills so I was nervous about how my painting would turn out but the instructor, John really made everyone feel at ease and confident about their painting. John is the best instructor, he was able to control the room but yet still keep the fun and energy from start to finish. I will definitely be back.

I went here yesterday with my coworkers! Love love LOVE this place! You can bring your own wine, there's no cork fee, and you have fun painting! Courtney was fun and helpful and they have food. It's right near the children's museum so it's near everything. Great deals for larger group. Like Shia Lebeuf said: just do it!!!!

This is a fun evening, and designed for the untapped artist in your soul, ( wine helps!) A friend hosted a private party, the staff were very rude to her during the organizing faze, when we arrived...many of us right from work, we were rushed into our places and unable to greet the other attendees. No explanation of where wine was to be opened, we were able to bring our own, ONE menu had been circulated, but was stowed away by the time I got there so I was unable to order any food. After rushing us to our seat we were given a 10 minute speech advertising all available classes. Finally the painting class started, again we were rushed through the process, the instructor seemed distracted and frequently forgot to give direction on process to the class. The example painting was not easily visible and the one she was working on during demonstration was usually blocked by the instructor so one could not see what she was doing. While it was delightful to be with friends, the atmosphere was rushed and stressful, very little guidance was given to the new painters on technique or how to improve their art. I will hesitate to return, but will check out the same concept in the west end. Should I see the customer service improve I would then consider returning, but for $35 per painting art classes elsewhere seem a better option.

Follow that for the parking lot right in front of the school. ***EXPERIENCE*** I took a stained glass class here and adored it. It was a sold out class that had a very long waiting list. I was grateful to be a member and to be able to sign up early. It was a two day class that lasted from 10am-4:30pm. The only reason this spot loses a star for me is because the class was advertised for one weekend and they changed it without notifying me until the last second. Had my friend taking the class with me not notified me of the email she got (which I didn't), I would've missed this. I had purchased this class about three months in advance and made plans for the weekend they rescheduled it for and had to do a lot of scrambling/canceling to change my weekend plans I had also made months in advance. Our class was led by Jude Schlotzhauer who was very knowledgeable about stained glass and the techniques of making it. I love the way she taught the class. She explained everything to us, had us test out glass cutting techniques, pick out an outline we liked, cut out glass for that, wrap the edges in foil, and flux and solder the pieces together. It was so much fun. She even gave us a sheet with places to get the supplies if we wanted to continue making stained glass. ***PRICE*** As a member, this class was $160. ***BATHROOM*** There are single all gender bathrooms scattered around the building. ***CONCLUSION*** After this class, I want to make stained glass pieces all the time. I had an absolute blast. My friend and I can't stop daydreaming about making more together.

I have had my DSLR for a little over half a year and had only used it outside of automatic mode a few times. Manually controlling aperture, shutter speed and ISO seemed so daunting that I rarely tried it. I had a strong desire to learn more and when I saw the name of this class, I jumped at the chance. Mr. Dunkley has a straight forward and efficient presentation style. There were 100 people or so in the class holding 20-30 different camera models. He managed to give personal attention to all people and make sure every question for every camera was answered and yet, it never felt like there was a pause in the class as he was doing so. . . Very efficient. Add in a bit of humor and knowledge built from years of experience and the 3 hour class seemed to only last half that time. In the end, I learned more about my camera in those three hours than I had in the previous 7 months. In addition to the camera settings, which he explains very well, he gave great advice on which lenses a beginner should and should not use. In the week since I have taken this class, I have taken about 50 pictures that make me say "wow that is a great picture" when in the previous half year, I may have had the same reaction a dozen times. Of course, that was when I just "got lucky" when I was in automatic mode, which I will never use again.

He demystified and clarified many photography concepts and camera functions. I feel that he did a great job at making photography approachable and accessible. great course, great experience.
