Can't say enough positive things about the Visual Arts Center (VAC) of Richmond!…read more One, they have free parking in the back for patrons! I could end the review there but I will continue. My partner and I checked out the VAC for one of their Second Friday Art Classes. They offer $15 dollar art classes on the second friday of each month making strides in making art accessible. We ended up doing an air dry clay workshop which was extremely fun (you can see our amazing creations in the photos). Our instructor was kind and taught us some really amazing tips. While we waited for our class to start we roamed around and checked out their exhibits. This is a stunning place to view some art work, so many talented artists pieces are on display, you won't get bored here. We even got to learn about our next date night by examining the community board. The VAC of Richmond is an amazing example of community, learning and wonder. Can't wait to return for my next art class adventure!

She is encouraging and will tell you "nice job!" making you feel like a pro when you're not....but you'll be a whole lot closer under her tutelage. She is awesome. Everyone I talked to at the center is super nice and they offer a wealth of classes, many with various levels so you can build on your skills or just a one day class to do something fun and bring a project home. I like to learn and I like to meet new people and I so much enjoy being here. I just hate the parking since I am not a city dweller (lol!) and there is always someone waiting to lay in on their horn if you don't move fast enough. Oh well. There is some parking available in a lot if you get there early enough. I am sooooo wanting to take every class here!! You should too.

I have had my DSLR for a little over half a year and had only used it outside of automatic mode a few times. Manually controlling aperture, shutter speed and ISO seemed so daunting that I rarely tried it. I had a strong desire to learn more and when I saw the name of this class, I jumped at the chance. Mr. Dunkley has a straight forward and efficient presentation style. There were 100 people or so in the class holding 20-30 different camera models. He managed to give personal attention to all people and make sure every question for every camera was answered and yet, it never felt like there was a pause in the class as he was doing so. . . Very efficient. Add in a bit of humor and knowledge built from years of experience and the 3 hour class seemed to only last half that time. In the end, I learned more about my camera in those three hours than I had in the previous 7 months. In addition to the camera settings, which he explains very well, he gave great advice on which lenses a beginner should and should not use. In the week since I have taken this class, I have taken about 50 pictures that make me say "wow that is a great picture" when in the previous half year, I may have had the same reaction a dozen times. Of course, that was when I just "got lucky" when I was in automatic mode, which I will never use again.

We got a new camera and had a trip planned and wanted to take some quality pictures. I was skeptical, thinking that it would feel like a boring class with a dry lecturer. Well, nothing could be further from the truth. Okello was fun and engaging, he provided practical examples and appropriate metaphors. He had a very tight presentation that had a natural flow. He demystified and clarified many photography concepts and camera functions. I feel that he did a great job at making photography approachable and accessible. great course, great experience.

Based on my experience at Pharm Road campus: Be careful what classes you pick, there are UNOFFICIAL prerequisites. Just because you see an intro class does not mean you are not expected to already know it. I took intro to Bio because I didn't have it in high school. All I heard the entire class was "you guys should have already learned this in ___ grade". Obviously not. Not everyone has the same background in a COMMUNITY college. Basically if the teacher has to actually teach you something, you become an inconvenience. I've gotten a better quality lectures from YouTube than at JSR. This is one of those schools where if you don't get "the right" teacher then you are screwed, so you have to ask around to find out who is "good" or not. Pathetic. No one here will participate unless they are called on & even then "i dunno" is an acceptable answer in my experience. Students will just sit there & daze out like they're being FORCED to attend. This sucks for group projects. Many people smoke here also. Teachers are NOT required to use Blackboard. My Biology teacher did not post a SINGLE thing. He said it makes it "too easy" & doesn't motivate people to come to class. I had him during fall, so we got A LOT of snow days & it was a COMPLETE disaster because we had no access to schedules or assignments online. The entire grading scale to that class had to be shifted since most of us were failing anyway. The foreign language classes are computer heavy. This is not an "online class" yet most of the work will be done using online assignments or watching the same boring video over & over until you're fluent. Hit the voice icon over & over until you learn it, come to class, fill in the blank to their print out tests, rinse wash & repeat for 18 weeks. English students will complain about writing. This school is very ghetto, so using proper English will be a challenge & is often seen as real work. Expect complaints for having to write or read "too much" which in my experience were 1-3 pages. Electives are just like middle school. You go off to yourself or to your friends for 2-4 hours & teacher makes her rounds at the end of class. The Student Life department is a JOKE. I've had to listen to the assistants on the phone talking about going to Golden Corral while a line builds up in the office! The staff here is just ridiculous! My advisers & counselors were never available no matter how many times I tried to schedule an appointment. I tried a tutor & had him just go MIA on me. When I went to drop a class they tried to talk me out of it (seriously) then when I didn't give in she completely flipped it! She tried to blame me for not liking the class. Whatever, you're not getting anymore money out of my pocket, that's for sure. Also he was blasting Jay Z in his cubicle as I was talking to him, sooo yeah. CAMPUS POLICE LOVE TO WRITE TICKETS. The worst issue at PRC by far. They patrol the parking lot like they're on commission. While you are in class they will look for ANY. EXCUSE. POSSIBLE. to give you a ticket. While you're in class security will roam the lot on foot like vultures. They will even scan random plates I'VE SEEN IT. I've even seen them look under cars, in cars WHILE STUDENTS ARE IN CLASS. It's CRAZY! Eventually I too got a ticket for parking in the "fire lane" which just so happens to be the majority of the parking lot. 'Sargent' Franklin wrote me a ticket once & refused to give his name in the process. It's a long story but there is an appeals process, guess who is in charge of judging appeals? Sargent Franklin. This is the kind of backwards stupidity that goes on here. This school will mess you up. If not your education then you will be financially setback from the tickets they hand out like candy at $25 apiece, & $35 if you lose the "appeal" which you will. For some reason I've only received B's here. I got 5 of them in one semester! I looked into the statistics for JSR 2011: Graduation Rate 11%, Retention Rate 59% Transfer Rate 16% & yet more expensive than Tyler. DTC seems a lot more organized & personal. I love the Middle College program it is amazing & REALLY helpful! I get the impression the teachers are better but honestly in terms of college goes I'd avoid JSR like the plague. School is already stressful as it is and here, often, you WILL be your own teacher. You will often find yourself looking ONLINE for better lectures or reading 4-6 chapters over & over again. Can you pass JSR? Yes. If you're coming for something YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO DO ON YOUR OWN then yes you will pass, I've done it. If you want to get an education, love learning and overall completely motivated JSR will beat that excitement out of you, leave it in the street then ticket you for it. JSR IS A WORST CASE SCENARIO FOR AN EDUCATION. 0 STAR *Statistics source: http://1.usa.gov/Ah01No

I took my mom here as a Christmas present and we both had a blast! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. We had about 12 other people in our class, and although we each painted the same picture and followed the same instructions from the teacher, all of our paintings looked slightly different but equally as impressive! The calendar on their website displays photos of the different paintings that correspond with the dates they are being offered. Just choose one you like, make sure the date works with your schedule, and purchase it directly online. There are a variety of options to choose from; everything from cartoonish images to Monet-inspired paintings. If you're a diehard fan of certain Virginia colleges, they also offer University of Richmond, VCU, and JMU themes. When you arrive, everything is already set up for the painting (colors of paints needed, brushes, and a blank canvas). There are aprons at each seat as well. The studio itself is a large open space with long tables towards the back where the painting actually occurs. The teacher we had was super friendly and the atmosphere was very relaxed- everyone was chatting the whole time. Painting AND wine?! Spirited Art has partnered with the Wine Loft, which is directly next-door, so there is at least one designated server per class. Not only is there a list of wines available (many at $5/glass), but there is also a painting-friendly menu of snacks that are easily eaten during the class. I think you are free to order anything from the Wine Loft's menu if you'd like, but they've created a more streamlined menu of suggestions conducive to the painting class. To help the servers keep track of orders, they use a cool system of numbered poker chips that attach to your easel with Velcro. I will definitely be back to test my skill on a different painting (and enjoy some more wine, of course)!
