My Alma mater #ram4life This university has transformed over the years since I attended. The rich history of Richmond VA mixed with the technology, modern architecture, and the diversity of the many cities of Virginia highlight this city university. The Monroe Park Campus is the main Academic campus and the Medical Campus is MCV (Medical College of Virginia) which is located downtown downtown. I have watched it grow from nameless buildings to more high rises than one can name. Many things remain from when I attended 1997-2004 but many new and upcoming buildings and structures dot the landscape of historic row houses and churches and buildings. The diversity of VCU is also a great draw, one of the reasons why I chose it over all others I could have gone. And I don't regret it one bit! If my children decide to go here, I couldn't be more proud!

I do not recommend students coming to Virginia Commonwealth University. The professors are very rude and do not care about there own students. Robin C. Lawson was very Rude to my child who attends VCU. Robin C. Lawson does not care about her students if they pass or fail which is very sad. I do not recommend students going to her for advice that's what I did and I was wrong. My Child is transferring to UVA a much better school. The professors don't care if students succeed in life which is sad. Very poor faculties. Terrible experience at VCU. Do not attend here you will regret it!!

I enjoyed walking around campus and took photos. I passed the School of Law building which is nice on the outside. It was a quiet day and campus wasn't too busy. The people that I encountered were friendly and helpful in directing me to the Spider Shop which I believe is in the student center. I was hoping to browse the shop and perhaps buy a shirt or other University memorabilia. Unfortunately, the Spider Shop was closed when I arrived so perhaps the shop closes on Sundays. I didn't attend University here but I enjoyed my short visit. My friend went to this University for undergrad and she had a great experience. **** GOAL of 250 reviews in 2026 - 92/250 total reviews in 2026 - 933 total Yelp reviews - Reviewed on 20 May 2026

There is a pattern of poor communication, lack of accountability, and broken promises. I was told I had a work study position, but later found out through staff that the program had been eliminated, with no direct communication to me. I was still being led on as if I would be starting soon. A former work study student also told me they were pressured to break their contract. Students, including those on Honor Roll and Dean's List, have been threatened for interacting with staff who genuinely care about their well being. Multiple staff members have left, and despite complaints, nothing has been addressed. I originally left a 5 star review because we were constantly pushed to leave reviews daily. That said, many staff members are great. The dean is supportive, Ms. Karen in HVAC career services truly cares, financial aid is helpful, and the HVAC instructors bring real world experience. The school has potential, but leadership needs serious improvement. I enjoyed it at first, but the environment changed.

Based on my experience at Pharm Road campus: Be careful what classes you pick, there are UNOFFICIAL prerequisites. Just because you see an intro class does not mean you are not expected to already know it. I took intro to Bio because I didn't have it in high school. All I heard the entire class was "you guys should have already learned this in ___ grade". Obviously not. Not everyone has the same background in a COMMUNITY college. Basically if the teacher has to actually teach you something, you become an inconvenience. I've gotten a better quality lectures from YouTube than at JSR. This is one of those schools where if you don't get "the right" teacher then you are screwed, so you have to ask around to find out who is "good" or not. Pathetic. No one here will participate unless they are called on & even then "i dunno" is an acceptable answer in my experience. Students will just sit there & daze out like they're being FORCED to attend. This sucks for group projects. Many people smoke here also. Teachers are NOT required to use Blackboard. My Biology teacher did not post a SINGLE thing. He said it makes it "too easy" & doesn't motivate people to come to class. I had him during fall, so we got A LOT of snow days & it was a COMPLETE disaster because we had no access to schedules or assignments online. The entire grading scale to that class had to be shifted since most of us were failing anyway. The foreign language classes are computer heavy. This is not an "online class" yet most of the work will be done using online assignments or watching the same boring video over & over until you're fluent. Hit the voice icon over & over until you learn it, come to class, fill in the blank to their print out tests, rinse wash & repeat for 18 weeks. English students will complain about writing. This school is very ghetto, so using proper English will be a challenge & is often seen as real work. Expect complaints for having to write or read "too much" which in my experience were 1-3 pages. Electives are just like middle school. You go off to yourself or to your friends for 2-4 hours & teacher makes her rounds at the end of class. The Student Life department is a JOKE. I've had to listen to the assistants on the phone talking about going to Golden Corral while a line builds up in the office! The staff here is just ridiculous! My advisers & counselors were never available no matter how many times I tried to schedule an appointment. I tried a tutor & had him just go MIA on me. When I went to drop a class they tried to talk me out of it (seriously) then when I didn't give in she completely flipped it! She tried to blame me for not liking the class. Whatever, you're not getting anymore money out of my pocket, that's for sure. Also he was blasting Jay Z in his cubicle as I was talking to him, sooo yeah. CAMPUS POLICE LOVE TO WRITE TICKETS. The worst issue at PRC by far. They patrol the parking lot like they're on commission. While you are in class they will look for ANY. EXCUSE. POSSIBLE. to give you a ticket. While you're in class security will roam the lot on foot like vultures. They will even scan random plates I'VE SEEN IT. I've even seen them look under cars, in cars WHILE STUDENTS ARE IN CLASS. It's CRAZY! Eventually I too got a ticket for parking in the "fire lane" which just so happens to be the majority of the parking lot. 'Sargent' Franklin wrote me a ticket once & refused to give his name in the process. It's a long story but there is an appeals process, guess who is in charge of judging appeals? Sargent Franklin. This is the kind of backwards stupidity that goes on here. This school will mess you up. If not your education then you will be financially setback from the tickets they hand out like candy at $25 apiece, & $35 if you lose the "appeal" which you will. For some reason I've only received B's here. I got 5 of them in one semester! I looked into the statistics for JSR 2011: Graduation Rate 11%, Retention Rate 59% Transfer Rate 16% & yet more expensive than Tyler. DTC seems a lot more organized & personal. I love the Middle College program it is amazing & REALLY helpful! I get the impression the teachers are better but honestly in terms of college goes I'd avoid JSR like the plague. School is already stressful as it is and here, often, you WILL be your own teacher. You will often find yourself looking ONLINE for better lectures or reading 4-6 chapters over & over again. Can you pass JSR? Yes. If you're coming for something YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO DO ON YOUR OWN then yes you will pass, I've done it. If you want to get an education, love learning and overall completely motivated JSR will beat that excitement out of you, leave it in the street then ticket you for it. JSR IS A WORST CASE SCENARIO FOR AN EDUCATION. 0 STAR *Statistics source: http://1.usa.gov/Ah01No

We took the opportunity after the game to visit the college of engineering. We wanted to give our son a first hand look of this part of the campus, if he chose to pick this school. Grant it, there is a huge benefit of taking a guided tour of schools, but we did this completely spirit of the moment. The school was very clean, they had a east and west building. We visited one of the buildings and just walked through and looked in rooms, read signs. The building was very very neat, and we saw students studying in their Saturday classes. It wasn't too busy not to mention we were careful not to disrupt anyone but it was interesting to see on our own.
