The park has a variety of play equipment, a huge sand area that even has toys that regular people probably have brought there and left. There is natural features for kids to explore, like rocks and stumps, and they also have a small handmade stream, but the time that I went, there was no water going through it. There is a baseball diamond and a walking trail around the park. There is also covered picnic area and an open picnic area and there are also even children picnic tables and some nice bathrooms. I would definitely go back because of all the natural features and the abundant shade.

It might be facing some stiff competition from the fancy Meadowbrook Park down the road, but it stills holds its own. Sometime over the last 5-7 years, they added a little "play creek" type of area that is a lot of fun in the summer time for my girls. It's shaded and a unique way to get their hands dirty. The little track around it is better suited for walking vs running, in my opinion. It's not that big, and it can be a bit crowded on a nice spring day. They also have nice restrooms and a few water fountains, so this was a good turnaround spot for me when I was doing long distance runs. With the road upgrades they also added a ton of space and smartly added a wonderful new play area and shelter/grill to the already frequently used basketball and sand volleyball courts. The new park has a exercise trail that goes around the perimeter so you could exercise while your kids climb all over the new playground area. There is a sand pit to dig in, lots of tree stumps to walk on and play follow the leader, a cool slide that sits right on a slope, a small rock climbing wall and toddler swings. This play area was obviously designed for kids 10 and under. I think older kids would be bored on the play stuff but would probably want use the courts anyway. There are only 2 swings and they are for kids under the age of 4. The shelter has a grill and so I'm sure it can be reserved. This is a great addition to what was wasted road space. This is not a big park, but is a nice stop on my way to the grocery for the kids to play on a warm day. It's been busy every time I've driven by if the temp is above 50!

One imagines it was built to accomodate the Baby Boom. What remains is the small parking lot. The rectangular structure's classrooms faced along Tomahawk Road. Check out a satellite shot of the site - the building's footprint is where the grass is browner. No trees? That's the former playground out back. The space has better karma as a somewhat boring dog run with a single picnic table.

The Mission Hills Playground it located behind the…read moreMission Hills City Hall (accessible from Mission Drive, between Tomahawk and 63rd Street) sits secluded, surrounded by verdant trees that shield it from the road. The playground equipment is suitable for children of various ages, including a rock climbing wall, monkey bars, slides, a fireman's pole and other such features. For my preschool children, the monkey bars are too high to reach, but they are able to enjoy themselves with all of the other attractions. The especially love to climb on the twisted green curve structure, the likes of which I have never seen on another playground, and to go down the steep slides. The park feels very safe due to both its isolation and the regular comings and goings of police officers into the City Hall building and parked in the lot. (Anyone who has ever driven up and down 63rd Street in this neighborhood knows well that the Mission Hills police officers like to catch speeding motorists by hiding on Mission Drive and other such small residential roads) There are three benches surrounding the playground. Usually one or two of the is in the shade at any given hour. Although it is impossible to see the entire playground from any one of the benches, the area is such that one can sit and watch his or her children playing fairly well from these seats. There is also a picnic table located off of the parking lot, near the outbuilding. Perhaps the best feature of this park is the public restrooms located in a small outbuilding off of the parking lot. As those with potty trained young children know, the need for a child to relieve himself often comes suddenly and most urgently, so it is delightful to have a clean facility on site. It is one spacious stall (with plantation shutters on the inside window, no less--swanky!), and it is clean. It remains open during daytime hours. Rumors suggest that a brick walkway to it from the playground may be added in the future.

Unfortunately the city of Prairie Village decided to do improvements and the new playground equipment isn't friendly to smaller children. The toddler playground you see in the pictures is no longer there and other than the sandbox or climbing on the nature area with logs, there really isn't a lot for toddlers to do. It's a great park for older kids, but it's unfortunate that the only park within walking distance for us is no longer friendly to small children.
