The castle was great and had a lot to view of Queen Elizabeth's childhood. The only issue was the city. It was a small city, but a lot of touristy stuff everywhere with isles of shipping for them. I'm not big on entire cities built around touristing. I think they are fine, but just not my favorite thing. read more

Definitely worth the drive! We rented a car and drove to Windsor from London. Try spending the whole day there or even stay overnight. There are several open parking lots and if you cannot find any, there is a parking building as well. Allocate 3-4 hours for the Castle itself. Get an audio guide so you will know the history. We visited the Chapel first --- which looked liked a Church and where King George VI is entombed. Then there is the Doll House display which was just amazing. The details are just incredible. Then of course there are the State Apartments -- which gives you a glimpse of royalty living. Check out their website before you go -- they give special tours. I would have wanted to do the Royal Kitchen Tour but unfortunately, it was not running when I was there. Then put on comfy shoes and do the long trail walk right outside the Castle which leads to the Copper Statue of King George III on Horseback. Allocate and hour or so to do a nice relaxed walk. Then end the day by going to any of the pubs, I recommend the The Duchess of Cambridge Pub (see separate review on this) right across the main entrance of the Castle. read more

Windsor Castle is cool - I mean, it's a castle! Neat to know that royals still take residence here. We spent the day in Windsor while visiting England and the castle didn't quite meet our expectations. The audio tour was informative and the walking tour itself is another museum type layout for tourists. The history is neat - yes - we were hoping for a little more. When the tour was done, my husband and I looked at each other and said, "That's it?" If you realize how large the property is and how you're in just a teeny tiny area of it, you may be disappointed at how little you saw too. Overall, we are glad we visited. read more

I LOVE seeing windsor castle, even though i pretty much lived in windsor for 20 years. Im not a history buff though i do enjoy history, so its not just that im a geek :) even the outside of the castle is a good visit, especially at the changing of the guard. There are also lots of quaint pubs on the cobbled area nearby. Inside you can visit the stately rooms and see old paintings - or you can visit the room with the dolls house. Everything is regal and old. It is a very good visit even if not a history boffin. There are plenty of shops nearby in which to buy your souvenirs. The castle is easy to get to as there is plenty of parking in windsor - and you can't miss it once your in the town centre! read more

It is the largest inhabited castle in the world. The last time I was there, I had the pleasure of knowing that Queen Elizabeth was spending her weekend there. The guided tour were very vivid and interesting but most unforgettable is the state apartments which were decorated lavishly. The experience was amazing. read more

Great example of Rip Off Britain. The tour lacks imagination, and costs a fortune. I guess we are still paying for the refurbishment since the big fire destroyed large parts of it. I haven't been invited to tea yet by Lizzie, although Phil the Greek often gives a wave whilst driving in his buggy. Bit annoyed that the local police get taken off their beat to go and do security duty during the changing of the guard. So all the thieves in the local area have a field day when the band strikes up. Great music from the band though, and quite a spectacle. read more

Visiting Windsor Castle represents a fantastic day out for all the family. I went recently with a group of boys and girls (aged 8-10) and my 3 year old daughter and they all loved looking round the state apartments and watching the changing of the guard. We were priviliedged to be able to visit the great kitchen and the entrance hall where guests are welcomed in when attending banquets (not generally open to the public). The armour was truly breathtaking and it was amazing to see how the kitchen had been restored after the fire. The gift shops were a little pricey but you would expect that and the kids all came away with some to remind them of their trip (some even caught a glimpse of the Queen!) read more

The Windsor castle is an interesting landmark, and definitely, one of the more renown castles in the world. If you are visiting the Windsor castle from London, remember to buy a package ticket (from the train station in London, this would include both admissions and also the train fare). This helps to cut the fairly high cost of visiting the Windsor castle - find it hard to justify that price tag. In the castle, there are several state rooms and you also have the royal art collection on display. What is even more interesting is the large set of miniatures, and surprisingly doll houses which are shown - totally caught me by surprise to see these items. Mind you, given the price, I still expected a bit more. read more

My favorite place for our family's first trip to London. I was worried about using an entire day just traveling but it was much closer than I expected. We purchased rail tickets from Paddington at the station. Took maybe 30 minutes. Easy. Arrived at 930 and stayed until maybe noon and was back in central London before 1. The grounds are amazing and the statehouses are incredible. The kids even loved it. The crowds were tolerable early in the morning. Didn't seem to be as many field trips or queues as the Tower of London or any museums. So much history here. Go there. You won't be disappointed read more

Beautiful, and a romantic reminder of what British royalty represents. We visited on a gorgeous July Sunday, so we did not mind the 40 minute wait outside to enter, and another 20 minutes to see the Dolls' House and apartments. The audio tour is included with the ticket price, and a significant help. Our 10 year-old-daughter even learned a few tidbits from the children's version of the audio commentary. All in all, lots of great art, furniture, ceiling paintings, and wood carvings. The Chapel is not accessible on Sundays, and the guard does not do its changing thing, so we did not see those. But we did not feel we missed those things anyway. read more

Windsor Castle is a very interesting place as it consist of past and present. There are a lot of history in the castle. I would recommend the guided tours to those who do not have much knowledge of the United Kingdom both the past and the present. However, some parts of the castle would be closed on different date. This is the weekend residence of Queen Elizabeth II, the mum of prince Charles! Yes she actually lives there on weekends. The flag will be up. Its in a nice town of Windsor minutes from London. The castle looks very majestic, and gorgeous from outside. The audio tour is a must and you can learn a lot about the interesting history of this historical place. I am not a fan of the doll house. Almost 18 pounds for admission per person is a little bit overpriced compared to similar historical places around the world! read more

I visited with my boyfriend and so we enquired about military discount and to our astonishment when my boyfriend produced his card we were informed that it entitled him to free admission plus five friends! Amazing value when we would have been content with simply a reduction in price. Windsor Castle is unsurprisingly a key tourist destination and I was very pleased with what i saw/learnt despite the state rooms being closed.. for renovation?! Nevertheless I really enjoyed the visit and I'm keen to return when the weather is nicer! Beautiful, historic site, just oozing culture. read more

We went on a Tuesday afternoon, hoping to avoid crowds as we've heard. We took the (mostly empty) train to Slough, then transferred for the quick stop to Windsor. It was a short walk (less than 1/4 mile) through the town to the castle up a slight hill. We were pleasantly surprised to find that there was no line, and we were able to make our way through the castle at our own pace. We started at St. George's, since it was mid-afternoon, and were wowed at its history. Questions for the docents were answered with good humor, and we probably spent a lot more time there than a normal person would have. The place is astounding in it's splendor and scale, and gives lots of insights into how people lived way back in the day. Be prepared for tight security (although we didn't have a wait of any kind to go through). If there were loads of tour buses it would have been difficult to manage. Don't be afraid to go on your own - don't book a tour - because there are audioguides and there are helpful people in Windsor at the train station to get you where you're going. read more

What do you say about Windsor Castle. I had to queue for some time to get in and for that reason 4 or 5 stars is too many. I hate being kept waiting. The Royal Appartments are splendid of course and we'll worth a visit. The free audio tour is pretty good but my friend's device stopped working and staff could not replace it mid - tour. Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world, is one of the official residences of Her Majesty The Queen. The Castle's dramatic site encapsulates 900 years of British history. It covers an area of 26 acres and contains, as well as a royal palace, a magnificent chapel and the homes and workplaces of a large number of people. There is plenty of parking in Windsor if you come by car (although it's not particularly cheap), and most car parks are only a short walk away from the castle. Both railway stations are end of line stations, meaning it's not the easiest place to get to by rail unless you go via central London. I was fortunate to have had free entry on the day we visited, otherwise it would have been a very expensive day out (probably too expensive, considering the number of us in the party and bearing in mind that much of the castle is out of bounds and certain areas are closed down on certain days with the entry fee not reflecting this). The areas of the castle you are allowed to view are incredible, especially considering most of it has had to be rebuilt. The rebuild is unbelievable and you really cannot tell what area was damaged and what area was not. The dolls house is magnificent, so much detail, a marvel of British craftsmanship. The interior royal apartments and grand halls take your breath away. The State apartments are undoubtedly as equally impressive for foreign dignitaries as they are for the tourist. We visited on a Sunday so were unable to visit the Chapel, which was a disappointment as the interior is apparently very impressive. The place is very expensive, but if you time it right you will be able to see the whole castle, including the chapel and still manage the time to watch the changing of the guard. The food in the cafe was delicious but unrealistically expensive! read more

This palace is a city in it self. You need at least a half a day during the off peak season to see everything. St George 's chapel is beautiful. I spent a lot the time here. The Order of the Garter is interesting! The chapel should not be missed. Queen Mary's dollhouse is remarkable, so many pieces and In not into dollhouse. The State Apartments amazing with all the architecture and various lavish styles. It is a mist see. read more

Worth a trip outside London to see this. Easy train ride from Paddington station with a train transfer in Slough. Travel took about 40 minutes. Make sure to bring your own headphones for the audio tour that is included in price of admission. Also, HIGHLY recommend buying your tickets ahead of time. We went in the offseason and the line for tickets was long, we felt like rock stars skipping right by this queue for the advanced purchase line. I could hear several people say they wish they had done the same. We were inside in a few minutes after going thru security. Give yourself at least 3-4 hours if all the attractions are open and watch out for the last admission time for most attractions. read more

Massive and fascinating! You could easily spend all day looking around. A must see place.

Enjoyed our trip out to Windsor Castle. Both the entry fee and the train were included in our London Pass. Windsor is a quaint borough, so be sure to set aside some time to walk the town and shop. The Castle itself was interesting. We arrived in time for the changing of the guard, but the criticism is that the area to view the changing of the guards is simply too small for all the tourists. We were 6-7 deep, but there were very rude Asian tourists with who stuck selfie sticks in front of our faces and blocked our view so that they can video the guards. You would think a few seconds are enough to take home, but they kept the video running for 5-10 minutes. We could not see, let alone enjoy, the changing of the guards, so we walked way to tour the Castle. Because Windsor is still a working Castle for the monarchy, tourists are only allowed to see a few areas. The Chapel should not be missed. Worth the trip out, especially since the train transportation is included. read more

We ubered out to Windsor from London to see this beautiful castle, and what a lovely day it was. The Queen was in due to Ascot, and we had a great tour with a tour guide around the grounds and then used the audio tour inside the castle. We were fortunate enough to be sitting in the right place at the right time when the changing of the guards began. This is THE place to see this ceremony. Buckingham Palace is much more crowded and you have to stand so far away. At Windsor, the guards walk right by you (my son jumped in front of them - poor guards!), and there were only a handful of other people there. Beautiful grounds to sit and let children run around. We brought a sandwich and ate it on a bench and later had dinner at a pub down the street. It's really amazing that you can go into the state rooms and see these spaces. Beautiful, priceless works of art and furniture. Views are breathtaking. St George's Chapel was closed because it was a Sunday - too bad because I really wanted to see it. Otherwise a perfect day. We decided on a little adventure and took the train back to London. Our first time on it. Definitely seedy and someone who fancied himself the next Justin Bieber loudly singing a song that wasn't appropriate for my children to hear. Still a great day all around. read more
