Not somewhere to visit on a Bank Holiday with children, because of the queues and the disturbing number of opportunities for your kids to leap the barrier and jump on a 17th century four poster bed. In terms of quality and understatement, though, this is a must with a phenomenal collection of paintings and some real context for otherwise obscure Royal customs such as the 'Order of the Garter'. If you can shut out the modern world around you and put yourself back in time, you get a real feel for the role of the Castle in Britain's social history. Then, when you work out that the whole place was stone-clad in the 18th century, you realise that deep down the Royal Family are pleb(eian)s just like the rest of us. read more

Windsor Castle is a great place to visit. The acessible areas include the state apartments and the some of the sections which have been impressively restored after the fire in 1992. It is wonderful to get a chance to walk around a castle which covers 900 years of British history. The entrance fee also includes St George's Chapel which is a fine piece of Gothic architecture and the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter and also contains the tombs of Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour, Charles I and others. Pictures are not allowed in many of the interior sections of the castle, pictures which is a shame, but overall it is a great place to visit for old and young alike. The changing of the guard is a fine piece of British military spectacle. If you want to see this please check the timing, it is usually 11:00 from April to July, but the timing and location may vary. Tickets are relatively expensive with the current cost £16.50 for adults (student and Senior Citizens £15) but this does include an audio guide which was very good and standard tickets can be converted into a 1-year pass which is useable on most dates except Bank Holidays. I'd strongly recommend going early, the queue to get in gets very long! read more

It's absolutely worth seeing. It's a residence befitting royalty, and it's in excellent shape. Lots of state gifts from centuries back line the halls and the grounds are immaculately kept. My only gripe is the price. We paid a pretty stiff cab fare to get there from Heathrow, and then another 17 pounds to get in. The hours are goofy, so be sure to double check before you go. We were able to hit both the State Apartments and St George's Cathedral, and those are the primary attractions. In all the whole thing took less than an hour, so make sure you do your homework before you get there, to avoid disappointment. All that said, it's a pretty impressive castle. Was so impressed with the little town, the market area directly outside or within the train station. The castle and property is truly magnificent. I was brought up in Windsor, so it was part of the backdrop but it's incredibly impressive, nonetheless! St George's Chapel is breath-taking and it's worth finding out when the services are, if you wish to participate. After all, that is the reason for it being there. My personal favourite is the Queen's Dollshouse. (When I lived here, you could just walk into the castle but then there was the fire and now you need to pay quite a lot to walk in but you had to pay for the ticket for The Dolls' House.) The dolls house is incredible. all the furniture and food etc. was made by the greatest British businesses of the time but, of course, in miniature. I don't think anyone ever played with it that much but I could stand for ages cooing at all the beautiful, perfect and tiny objects in it - and I have! read more

Windsor is where the Queen impresses foreign dignitaries, and impress it does. Outside, it looks like a medieval castle, but inside is the most gorgeous and ornate decor! In the fall, all the leaves on the grounds burst in color! Aka, beautiful photographs! In the State Apartments, you will literally be in awe of the details (mostly done in gold!). The halls will blow you away, and each room will elicit a different feeling of glamour. If I could live in a castle, this is the one I would want to live in. Mary's dollhouse is probably the coolest dollhouse you'll ever see. If it were life-size, it would be as grand as Windsor Castle itself. Only the top notch materials were used to build it, including gold silverware!!! The audioguide is pretty detailed, and you'll learn a ton about the castle and its history, including the fire that seems to have burned down about 1/3 of it in 1992. (The audioguide comes with your ticket). If you are planning to come back, make sure you get your ticket stamped so you get 1 year free entry! If you are a student, tell them! Visited April 2015: "A part of the London Pass" When we got there, we had to go through security. We had to go through metal detectors, and our bags went through an x-ray scan. We were then informed that we would not be able to see the State Rooms, and the guards were not changing duty at their normal time today because of the holiday. This was not stated on their website. Later on, I learned that the Queen was in residency because she went to church there on Easter Sunday. One of the guides told us that 5 of the previous monarchs were buried in the chapel, so we were able to see the St George's chapel, but we would have to do it quickly because a service was starting soon. My friend and I got caught and attend it for the entire. I upset me how many tourist would come in during the service, walk around, take a seat, and then get up an leave. I found it to be rude and uncultured. Other than that, the service was an eye opener to how the Church of England worships. ***Note: no photos of the Chapel were allowed*** read more

Wonderful experience at Windsor Castle! The audio devices with headphones were very helpful in getting the full experience of the castle and its history. The gift shops were lovely...much nicer (better quality) than the ones outside the castle grounds. read more

This castle is absolutely fantastic. When I went the Queen and French President were in residence having a state banquet. The changing of the guard ceremony is outstanding. You can get so close to the guards it is unreal. In the chapel you can see the vaults were past Kings and Queens are buried. You also have the opportunity to view parts of the interior of the castle. The wealth is so evident with all the interior decor. There are no refreshments available inside the grounds. I don't know why.I had to leave my family inside whilst I went back outside to get some drinks and food. read more

While the price is indeed quite high, if you are smart you read the part of the leaflet that says you get free returns for a year. Fill the leaflet out and get it stamped, and that's you set. Having said that, I'm still not sure it is worth nearly £15 for the short tour of the State Rooms and St George's Chapel--that's more than you'd pay at most historical places and you get to see less of the property. Okay, so obviously the Queen deserves some privacy, but adjust the prices accordingly, okay? St George's Chapel was my favourite part of the day, just so incredibly steeped in history and beauty. Everywhere you look you can see examples of breathtaking artistry, down to the tiniest of carvings. My personal favourite was a life-size marble statue of Princess Charlotte, who died in childbirth, accompanied by angels and her unborn son. I stood before it fighting back tears, for far too long for the other visitor's liking, I'm sure, but it was just so heartbreaking and beautiful that I wanted to take it all in properly. The list of kings and queens buried at this site is incredible, and only when thinking the list over did I absorb the age and history of this place. Even those who are not religious cannot deny the sense of peace and tranquility within the walls of St George's Chapel. read more

I have to say I loved Windsor Castle but then again I am a historical nut. For the occasional visitor on holiday i'd probably have given this 3 stars. It is very pricey at £15 for Adults. My stay lasted 3 1/2 hours but I think for those less interested you can be in and out in the space of an hour. The state rooms are jawdropping and I spent most of my time there - I was dissapointed that the round tower is totally unaccesable. Unlike others here, if you are truly interested in history it is great. Especially if you have the time to stop in each room rather than being in a hurry to see everything immediately. read more

If your bored and looking for somewhere to go on those boring holidays, give Windsor Castle a go. I visited last summer and i wasen't dissappointed. I made a day of it and started off with the castle. The entrance fee is a little high but you will take many memories home, The stately appartments are amazing and the Dolls House was awsome and astounding. You are inundated with paintings and portraits and furniture that will make you wanna touch it (but dont). With the guided tour you will also get to see St George's Chappel home to so many Royal tombs. An amazing site, yet to be repeated anywhere ive visited. Lovely dayout. read more

Windsor Castle is beautiful. It is in a really pretty location. This is the Queen's home from time to time. A definite tourist attraction anytime of the year! There are quaint shops surrounding it.. part of the River Thames. You can walk along here to Eten College too. Inside the castle only charges £12 I think and you can see all the history and paintings, armour and furniture and wonderful views of the grounds from various windows. The grounds are large. Largeer than you imagine when you first look at the castle. It is one of Britain's most famous landmarks. There are a couple of carparks located nearby. All within walking distance. However there are lots of cobbled streets, so bumpy for wheelchairs and buggies etc. A must see especially if you are touring. Or of you have never got around to it and you live here. read more

No picture or review will ever truly capture the grandeur and splendor of this remarkable Castle. It is a must see if you are in the UK! This place has many visitors, but security and staff were helpful, pleasant, and made sure that the wait was as expedient and efficient as possible. The castle is simply breathtaking both inside and out and I can't say enough about how well curated the audio tour is. We visited on a sightseeing tour, but this is an easy train ride with the station located very close to the grounds. I felt like we were in a fairy tale as we toured listening to all the history that surrounds this magical place. The ornate rooms, impeccably preserved artifacts and paintings, and meticulously maintained grounds are beyond compare. We were able to explore the State Apartments via both the ceremonial and historic routes, the moat room, and very briefly St. George's Chapel as our time was limited due to our sightseeing schedule. There is also a great downtown nearby with lots of shops and restaurants should you make a day of your stay. You have no excuse to not go! read more

All I can say about Windsor Castle, the Official Residence of her Majesty the Queen, is don't try to go and visit the day before Easter. The castle was closed on Good Friday and it is also closed on Easter. The Queen was in for Easter Sunday services with the Royal Family. The que to get inside Windsor was a minimum of 12 blocks long, The security staff working the lines said they had rarely seen lines like today. They expected over 10,000 visitors that day. From the outside, you can catch glimpses of the enormous castle. The castle is the Queen's favorite weekend home. The castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. The castle has been home to 39 monarchs since the 11th Century. The town of Windsor is adorable and is fun to explore. The town of Eton is nearby. There was a large parking lot full of tour buses. The lines to simply enter would have taken hours (even if you had pre-purchased a ticket on-line.) Then, we could only imagine the rooms would be cramped with visitors like Buckingham Palace is in the summer. We will try to visit again on another day. We will either book a tour to help with priority to enter or go early on a weekday. Highlights are the Changing of the Guard at 11:00, weather permitting from Monday to Saturday between April and July. Queen Mary's Dolls' House, St. George's Chapel, and The State Apartments. There are tours of the Great Kitchen in August and September. You can climb the Tower which is 200 steps and there is an evening tour. To get to Windsor by the Tube transfer to the GWR (National Rail) at London Paddington (Waterloo is also an option.) Purchase your round-trip train/rail tickets (they offer anytime day return) in the GWR Ticket Office and take the train to Slough (there are Express trains.) The Adult Standard Class cost £14.20. Transfer to Windsor/Eton Central. The ride takes about forty-five minutes. The train station drops you off at a shopping area and the entrance to Windsor is just a couple blocks away. As a local growing up in Windsor, it's easy to dismiss what's right in front if you. However, when I visited the other day, it was a thoroughly pleasant experience. It's worth mentioning that locals with an advantage card can gain discounted and sometimes free entry. We visited Windsor Castle on a weekday in January. The state apartments were not open so we paid a reduced price for admission. We knew this in advance but be sure to check if you really want to see the state apartments. We took the train which was very easy and convenient. Note that Windsor is too far out to use contactless payment (Apple Pay or Oyster Card) so we needed a paper ticket. From the Windsor-Riverside train station (there are two stations), you just follow the Castle wall around through the town of Windsor until you arrive at the Castle entrance. You can't miss it. The town of Windsor has plenty of shopping and restaurants. Note that they also have a number of homeless individuals who appear to live on the street between the train station and the entrance to the Castle, in the path of tourists. We took a Precincts tour of the Castle exterior which was really outstanding. I would highly recommend this for the stories and history the guide can impart. There is also a long walk to the Castle which is enjoyed by many. read more

Must-see. An amazing history lesson that cements all that you've learned from history books. A majestic castle still inhabited by Royalty and dates back to William the Conqueror of 1066! Top 4 Favorites: 1. St. George's Chapel. The most beautiful church I've seen. Intimate, quaint, yet demanding. Neo-perpendicular gothic. The heraldry flags above the quire, with each Knight of the Companion getting to design his/her own emblem is testimony to the life of a monarch. Peer into the Albert Memorial! It's laiden with ornate mosaics, probably influenced by his wife, Queen Victoria as she had done in St. Paul's Cathedral. Jaw-dropping detail and beauty. 2. State Apartments. Can you imagine seeing SOLID silver furniture from 1699? And to know Louis XIV melted his to make coins while William III kept his as a token of his power, wealth, and his ability to defeat the French King is money! What's in those State Apartments has been preserved in mint condition. 3. Queen's Diamond Jubilee. What an honor to be a part of the Queen's 60th year in reign. They say the only other monarch to hold a position this long was Queen Victoria. The celebration was in June, but pictures spanning her monarch life are on display until January 2013. 4. Conquer the Tower Tour. An extra 6 pounds is worth the views and history lesson of Eton College, the Frogmore House, King Albert and Queen Victoria's Mausoleum, Shard, Runnymede and the Magna Carta, the 1992 fire, and the purpose of the Round Tower past and present. Regrets: 1. Toured this place in 3.5 hours and felt horribly rushed. I would've preferred that I gave myself at least 5 hours to peruse the shops, listen to the audio guide in its entirety, attend Evensong at St. George's Chapel, people watch, and ask the staff more questions. 2. We parked in a public hotel car park (20 pounds) across from the castle and I wished we had parked in any of the three "long stay car parks" (6 pounds) instead: Romney Lock, King Edward VII, or Alexandria Gardens. 3. We had drinks at the Carpenters Arms, supper at the Latino and dessert at Drury's. I wish I had did everything at Drury's instead because the service and atmosphere was everything the others did not have and that made all the difference tenfold. read more

In late November I decided to do a day trip to Windsor to see the castle. It was relatively empty, which was nice, and all the Christmas decorations were up inside the castle. End of year is definitely a good time to visit. After purchasing a ticket, there's a security check including bag x-rays and metal detectors. As you exit the security screening area, pick up a free audio guide! There's some really interesting tidbits on the audio tour and you can walk it at your own pace as each area/room has its own audio track that can be played individually. Definitely try to go at a time when the state rooms are open to the public as they're wonderfully interesting and pompously beautiful. Staff inside the castle is very friendly and knowledgeable, they'll answer all your questions as best they can. You're not allowed to take photos inside the castle, but you can snap pictures outside as much as you like. The chapel is also a beautiful place to see, with amazing history and gorgeous sculpture. The souvenir shops dotted around the area pretty much all carry the same items. As usual, pricing is quite steep. All in all, it's definitely worth a trip. read more

Windsor Castle is conveniently located from the rail stations. Its a well maintained place. Not going to go in detail about history as thats the job of wikipedia. Must visit are St George Chappel, State Apartments. I am personally no fan of the Dolls. Personally feel its over hyped as it is not even the miniature of actual Kings and Queens Quarters. It always has huge waiting line of about 45 mins. Not worth wasting so much time. State Apartments are nice. Takes about 2 to 3 hours to cover whole Castle. read more

I rarely give 5 stars but this place was awesome and well worth the visit. If you love viewing historical art collections, knives, armor, old church pews, walking the same steps and in same places as those famous faces of the UK, then Windsor's the place to go. I found the tour guide charming, the decor and views wonderful (even in the rain), and would have this as a must see site if staying in or near Windsor. Now the bad, you have to do a lot of walking. But even that isn't too bad as most of the time there is so much to see that you don't mind the extra stroll or 2 around the Windsor Castle. But if I were a handicapped individual I might be concerned as I didn't really see any elevators providing easy access to 2nd floors. But once inside lots of room to move a wheelchair along. read more

We rented an old town home about a 10 minute walk from windsor castle for a week. I much preferred windsor to london. I also preferred windsor castle to kennington castle. I felt it was more assessable to the general public. I could say that i was neighbors with the royal family! read more

Windsor castle is an interesting place to visit. I wouldn't recommend it has a place to visit on your first visit to London. It is dead easy to get there via train from Paddington. The ticket is cheap and Windsor is a nice little town. The castle is interesting and has loads of artifacts. I really enjoyed the doll house. It is a pitty that you are not allowed to take pictures. The gardens are pretty but were lost on me as the weather wasn't good. read more

Impressive and large 900 year old castle. I wasn't as impressed with the parts of the interior that we peasants were able to see. Maybe it was because I visited in winter time and some things were closed off. Also..perhaps many anglophiles will hate me for saying this but I found a lot of the decor in the castle very over the top and tacky. I prefered Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh by a long shot (the home of the Queen when she is in Scotland). read more

Because of this I was sooo glad that I visited Windsor. I loved the doll house and the church and the shops. The town of Windsor itself is too cute. This was a great place to take a day trip to. I went when it was in the middle of January. We literally were able to run around the castle without any queues or other tourists. It was basically empty except for a few other tour groups. You are not allowed to take photos of the castle inside but outside you can take as much as you want. I loved the doll houses and the state apartments. It was interesting to look at each of them . You can easily kill more time than you are supposed to, to make it in time for your bus to another excursion. Changing of the guards is something good to watch while you are visiting here. read more
