    a view of a lake

Awesome view of lake barkley! A Lovely Sunday buffet. The food was wonderful with a fresh salad bat and homemade white bean soup. We had the ribs, green beans and corn from the buffet. They also had fried chicken and ham and mashed potatoes and mac-n-cheese but we opted for healthier choices. We love it here. The waitresses are always super nice! Such a nice view!! And a great price at $13.98

Awesome breakfast and fantastic service too. The grandchildren really enjoyed a pancake breakfast after an exciting night of camping. Can't wait to return after they finish refurbishing the pool.

I love visiting my husband's family and enjoying all of the water and wonderful food. This may be my new favorite spot! Delicious food, super friendly staff, the history of the grounds, the view, I loved it all. Will be back next time we are in town!

Fried pickles, fried green tomatoes, and fried catfish on the patio. Which has to be served in these containers apparently.

This place is a bit musty smelling. Which was ok because we had our pup with us so we needed to sit on the patio. If you sit on the patio everything you order has to be served in styrofoam containers appropriately. Even your beer. Of course they put it in the styrofoam piping hot so it melts around your food. Not so appetizing. I ordered a side salad which meant I got a styrofoam to go box and got it off their buffet. The buffet looked like it could have been set the day before. Needless to say it did not look fresh. We also ordered fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, and fried catfish. We thought...you can screw up fried food. The tomatoes and pickles were good but the catfish my not have been done. It was undercooked and slimy. The view was great as the staff was very nice. But we wouldn't go back again.

Well worth the little drive, looking around to make sure you find the right place, then park, and walk! This gem took us a bit to find yet so glad we did! Beautiful area and hope to some day stay a few days for a bit of R&R. They were sold out at the time we found it, next time we will call in advance. Lake Barkley State Park is a beautiful area and well taken care of. Windows On The Water is a wonderful surprise to enjoy lunch (next time we will try dinner!). I must say when we arrived and made our way down the stairs to the restaurant there were three younger ladies who would have rather finished their non business conversation instead of greeting us which was a bit of a turn off. Yet after a few minutes a more experienced woman greeted us, seated us and was the most lovely waitress we could have asked for! We enjoyed our lunch, view of both inside and outside! The restaurant itself is quite rustic attractive and perfect for the setting! The lunch did take about 20- 25 minutes to be served yet when it was it was flavorful, hot and delicious! Well worth the wait! I recommend anyone who wants a nice, relaxing get away to try this place!

My favorite place for breakfast. Love their breakfast bar. A lovely view and a very relaxing time. I love the service and the friendly interaction. Country Cooking at it's best. My favorite is the atmosphere, so pleasant and just lovely wonderful way to begin my Sunday morning.

Shrimp cocktail on the seafood buffet
    Heather P.

We came here for the seafood buffet that they offer on a Friday night, once a month. It's $16.99 per person, but that doesn't include crab legs. The crab legs were an extra $7.50 per pound, which isn't a bad price. I was going to add the crab legs, but at the table next to us, I noticed that they were extremely small. The buffet included frog legs, shrimp cocktail, pulled pork, clam chowder and a lot of other things. Some of the items were a bit under temperature. I loved the shrimp and the cocktail sauce. The salad was on point too. It's definitely worth the drive out, if you're in the area. The restaurant is actually part of the Lake Barkley State Resort, so when you pull up, there aren't any signs that specifically indicate "Windows on the Water". There was a small sign that said "dining room". There wasn't outside dining, which was a bit disappointing, but we sat as close to the lake view that we could. The windows need to be cleaned... just throwing that out there. If you're going to indicate windows in your name, at least maintain them. There's an awesome porch area that overlooks the lake. It has a few rocking chairs, but the old ladies occupying them, had set up shop and sat there the entire time that we are inside. They offered and took our picture with the picturesque view in the background, so I took back all of the harsh things I was thinking as I waited inside for them to get up, and it never happened.

The locals greeted me like I'd just come back from a long trip instead of walking in for the first time. Either they're incredibly friendly or they thought I needed supervision. Either way, solid welcome. Service was minimal in the best possible way. No hovering, life story, or unnecessary check-ins. Just quick, friendly, and efficient, like they understood I came to eat, not start a long term relationship. Now here's where things take a turn: the food has no business being this good. I ordered the Southside Supreme Pizza, and I'm still trying to figure out how a place that looks like it could host a darts league championship is casually putting out world class pizza. I've had pizza from all over the world and this place can hold its own. Thin, perfectly crispy crust, fresh ingredients, and enough cheese to make you question your priorities but not your choices. It's like the pizza didn't get the memo about where it was being served. So yeah, I give it 5 stars. Come for the dive bar charm, stay because the food quietly outperforms half of the "fancy" places that make you wait 45 minutes for a table and then serve you a disappointment on a wooden board. I'll definitely be back. Next time I might even try to look like I belong.

I didn't take any photos during that trip for this review and since everything about Harper House said, "Come on back and get some more." we decided to get back up there for another round. Reservations were for 7pm and we got there a tad early, but were seated promptly and probably right at 7pm...I wasn't checking my watch. We started off with a basket of their fried pickles (last time we started with the Group Grazing Board, but we had more in our party). They came out from the kitchen quickly and there's a really good portion for the price. They weren't as crispy as they could be, but they were really tasty. They came with a house made ranch dipping sauce that was just what we expected...ranch sauce. They did bring out some of their house cornbread as well with strawberry butter. I'm not a fan of cornbread all in all unless it comes in muffin form with cheese and jalapenos to eat with some pinto beans...but this was good. Had a hint of sweetness to it as well, which went well with the strawberry butter. My wife ordered the 7oz center cut filet mignon but she subsituted the mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts for Harper House Mac-n-Cheese and Crispy Red Potatoes. Initially, the filet came out slightly underdone, but they quickly made it right. She really liked it, said that it was exactly what a filet should be...and the peppercorn demi glaze made it that much better. I ordered the ribeye and kept the sides as is (baked potato & thin cut crispy onion strings). This was a super flavorful cut with an insanely rich, bold flavor and just the right amount of fat marbled throughout the cut. If you live right there in Cadiz and haven't been to Harper House, head over there to grab a bite. If you live down I24, you owe it to yourself to make the 30 minute drive and give it a shot. It's well worth the trip.

They were super crispy and served with sweet and sour sauce and mustard, which provided the perfect contrast. The sweet and sour sauce gave you that addicting, luscious flavor and the mustard had just enough pungency to keep you coming back for more. We demolished the bowl in probably record time. We also got the pimento cheese beignets, which were okay. They were deliciously fried pillows of dough that I felt could've used a bit more pimento cheese filling, but the pig ears completely overshadowed them. Devastated that nowhere around me offers this dish and I'll have to wait until the next I come back to get them again!

Everything was nicely plated and I think overall the dishes were good, but I didn't personally think I needed to have anything again per say. What we ordered: + smoked bone marrow - pickled red onion & parsley salad, smoked salt, grilled FM sourdough - generous to make sure we had 4 pieces, one for each of us, bread was toasted to near burnt, and I wish there was more herbs/onions to eat with + queso fondito - PRB chorizo, pumpkin seeds, cilantro, warm tortillas, escabeche - nice cheese blend, but I think it was missing some more oomph, I think I prefer the crunchy chip than tortilla + SM grilled 12oz bone-in pork chop - TN smoked cheddar mac and cheese, braised greens, TN chow chow - Not our favorite entree but I liked the cheddar mac + beef short rib stroganoff - Nicoletto's rigatoni, roasted onion, mushroom & garlic, sour cream - my favorite dish of the night! A unique way to present a classic dish and I thought it was delicious. + Empanadas - crispy exterior and good filling, the chimichurri was more oil-tasting than additional flavor + Gem salad with fried tomatoes - I like the fried tomatoes! However, the green beans with the pecans and the bacon, and whatever that sauce was, was worth the extra money. Our waiter was kind of weird and made us feel uncomfortable. Even though we had a reservation for TWO WEEKS ahead of time, our table was small and in the way of traffic. Many other empty tables around us that were never filled. I don't know why we had to sit right inside the front door in the middle of the aisle where everybody was walking by and accidentally hitting us as they walked by. I liked the ambience, but it was a small place, the waiter never smiled. He did an adequate job, but I wouldn't say he was great. The food was very good but not great. Bottom line... It is tucked in a neighborhood in the West End, and most people were surprised we found it or had heard of it as non-locals. It is a very popular spot. We arrived 20 minutes early and snagged the last parking spot in the lot behind the restaurant. Eric R. wanted to sit outside, so we were directed to wait at the bar until a table opened up. I got the cucumber sage yuzu spritz mocktail, and Eric R. got a local amber beer. Our table was ready within 10 or 15 minutes, so we migrated to it for dinner. Our server was helpful in providing recommendations. We started with three shareables: the mussels in lemongrass serrano beer broth and grilled bread, tempura long-stemmed artichokes on Calabrian chile mascarpone, and the lamb lollipops with pearled cous cous. I tasted the lamb, and it was heavenly, like melt-in-your-mouth tender but with a lot of caramelization. That was really Eric R.'s choice so I let him eat the majority of it. I really enjoyed the mussels and the artichokes! Everything was hot and delicious. I was sipping broth with a mussel shell when the bread ran out, and the host came out with more bread for us! It was so good. We asked to see a dessert menu. Eric R. had a tough choice between carrot cake and blondie with caramel ice cream, but was steered toward the blondie and did not regret it. I asked what the house made ice cream was for the day, and it was coconut matcha with a white chocolate shell topping. That sounded so perfect, and it was AMAZING. My goodness were we unprepared for just how perfect and delicious these would be. I absolutely couldn't get enough of the peanut slaw paired with the chicken. My fiancé is pretty picky when it comes to fried chicken, and he said this was the 2nd best fried chicken he's ever had.
