It's actually pretty…read morecool that there is something like this at this location where you don't have to drive out very far. That said, it's nothing incredibly fancy but it does the job. On that note, basically it is a very nice simple location with adequate facilities and reasonable prices. It's definitely not as fancy as you might get somewhere else, but it's not trying to be. So if you're just looking for a place to go practice your swing, this is great. Relaxed atmosphere and a little bit of quiet without driving to a country club is great. They also have a simple mini golf section. It's really definitely not their main feature. And in the offseason times like Fall, you probably won't be seeing it cleaned much, so expect leaves on the course. That said, it's kind of like a seasonal Hazard that changes up if you think of it that way. You can tell people mostly come for the practice range. But on a plus side the lack of crowding means you would have a lot of fun with kids. And unlike other mini golf areas nearby, you don't have to contend with being quite as noisy. There isn't a lot of traffic on the nearby Road and you actually are set off well enough with trees to make it feel a little more easy-going.

I believe the most famous Colonial Country Club is the one in Fort Worth followed by Cordova, Tennessee (outside of Memphis). Both have hosted PGA Tour events with the former also hosting both a men's and women's US Open major championship. While this Colonial Country Club in North Carolina may not have that kind of history or prestige, it's still a nice, private club nonetheless and I found it to be real treat to play on. My dad and I had planned to play one of our usual rounds at his home club, High Point Country Club (Willow Creek golf course). However, because of a tournament at Willow Creek, we played here instead because the clubs have a reciprocal agreement in place. This was my first visit to Colonial, but not for my dad. He's played Colonial several times over the years with other High Point Country Club members for various reasons, reciprocity being one and tournaments, I believe, being another. He and my mom have also attended holiday parties at the clubhouse for Thomasville Medical Center. The day of my visit, the clubhouse and course were setting up for a wedding. The wedding ceremony took place on the scenic lakeside 16th fairway and it appeared the dinner reception was inside the clubhouse: https://www.instagram.com/p/COWFnSjhkP5/. Before playing any "new" course (new to me), I like to do a little research. For Colonial, I checked out their website, Facebook, and Instagram. Having lived in Atlanta for the past 20 years, playing golf in metro Atlanta, and following many Atlanta area golf courses on social media, I noticed something immediately when I looked at Colonial's IG -- the club is now managed by Atlanta-based Bobby Jones Links. The dead giveaways were the pictures of the staff members who were awarded Clover Leaf (employee of the month) awards. They do the same thing at courses I follow in Georgia like Bobby Jones Golf Course, Legacy and Fox Creek, and Cobblestone. What a small world. In general, I think Bobby Jones Links has done a great job on the social media front. Their shirts look nice too. There are scenic views shortly after driving onto the property at Colonial. The course features three lakes (Upper, Middle, and Lower). On the front nine, starting with the 5th green, you get great views of Upper Lake. The 6th hole, par 4, has a blind uphill tee shot which I was not a fan of (I don't like blind shots). Upper Lake comes into play on the 8th hole, par 3, which measures 178 from the tips (blues). No. 9 is dogleg left par 5. On that hole, you'll want to err right on your drive because the fairway slopes right-to-left. I sliced my drive to the right side of the fairway and it rolled down to the center, putting me in great position for my next shot. As far as the back nine is concerned, I thought the tee box for 10 was a little confusing for a first-timer with the way the boxes are positioned between 12 green, the practice short game area, and 13 tee, plus the way the cart path goes. No. 10 is also a par 5 so it's hard to see exactly where you're supposed to hit. Anyway, that's just a minor gripe. The 10th green is tucked away in a corner so you do need to set yourself up for a good look by hitting a decent second shot. Holes 16 and 17 are some of the most picturesque and beautiful on the course. A par 4, 16 bends left around Lower Lake while 17, a par 3, is similar to 8 on the front, with a forced carry over water, but significantly less water to cover. The front ends dogleg left, the back dogleg right (par 4), both finishing at the clubhouse. Colonial opened in 1958. There are five sets of tees. From the tips, the course measures 6,809 yards with a 72.3/126 rating/slope. Not too long nor difficult, relatively speaking. When we played, the conditions were very good overall. Both the tee boxes and greens were in excellent shape. The greens were firm and fast. The only thing I didn't like about them was you could clearly see where numerous holes had been previously cut (just me being picky). Parts of some fairways could have used some work, but generally, there were no glaring issues maintenance-wise to me. It was what I expected out of a private country club in Thomasville. As far as layout and design, aside from the aforementioned water holes, I do think the holes are a bit simplistic and lack creativity or variety. Many of the fairways and greens are huge and there aren't a whole lot of trees separating holes. That makes Colonial very playable and more enjoyable for high-handicap golfers like my dad and me. Most holes do not have homes on them, so in that sense, this course feels more secluded and pure which I like. There's a pool, tennis courts, locker rooms and showers in the clubhouse, and two air blowers to clean your shoes. Service was terrific. The staff was friendly.

A great place to practice your game from 150 and in! As far as I'm concerned, Iron Play is the only…read morereal par 3 golf course in the Triad area, and is designed as such that there is real challenge involved. You've got elevation changes, bunkers, a couple holes where water must be crossed or is in play for an errant shot, and greens that will test your ability to make a proper read. We went on a hot summer day, and let me tell you, walking this course is no picnic thanks to the elevation changes (particularly on the front 9). Of course, there is no riding option, I rented a pull cart to make things a little easier for a nominal fee. I felt the course overall was in good shape, the back nine presenting better than the front just due to recent weather and some challenges for a few holes that don't get much air circulation thanks to proximity to the woods. There were 2 or 3 greens that were not in great shape, but honestly for the price I was pretty happy. Each hole has a white and a blue tee that you can choose for your skill level, the blue tee generally moving it back about 20 yards. The longest hole is 150, with most holes from the blue tees being in that 100-120 range. There are no fairways, and the course is links style, which is very appropriate for a par 3 course. There were a couple times where I was confused which direction to head in next when finishing a hole, a couple signs with an arrow would be appreciated when it isn't clear. I want to shout out Cindy for her excellent customer service. It was a very hot day, and I guess I was not drinking enough water. I had to stop on the 16th hole because either overheating or dehydration was having a very clear effect on me, she saw me walking in and came out to help me get my clubs inside, and immediately handed me a water and a packet of emergency hydration mix. She also got me an ice pack for my neck, and checked on me while I cooled down and condition got better. I'm very appreciative for her hospitality and care.

Emerywood is located inside the city and Willow Creek is located outside the city. Both properties offer most the same amenities such as golf, tennis, dining, and event space, but each is unique in its own way. This review is for Willow Creek where the club's 18-hole championship golf course is located (Emerywood has a basic 9-hole layout). I grew up learning how to play the game of golf mostly at Willow Creek. I took part in youth clinics and tournaments at a young age here. I was taught everything from learning how to properly repair a ball mark on a putting surface to hitting shots out of the sand -- things I still apply today. I still remember when the instructor put a $1 bill underneath our practice ball in the bunker to encourage us to hit behind the ball (and not rip the bill up). Today when I hit bunker shots, I often imagine a $1 bill underneath my ball to help with my sand shots. One of the assistant pros (I believe his name was Steve who later left for a job in Florida) really improved my driving ability by teaching me some important fundamentals when it came to my setup and swing. This was back when the clubhouse looked like a barn. After that, I had lessons from the current head pro and Director of Golf, Jim Brotherton. My dad and I have always been big fans of Jim. He's a super nice guy and has been at HPCC for as long as I can remember. He's an instructor who can get very technical. Do you remember that golf commercial where a guy is setting up to the ball and there are a gazillion things running through his head (e.g. keep your left arm straight, keep your eye on the ball, stay on plane, don't lift your foot, etc.)? That's how I felt one time on the range with Jim. During a lesson one time, I remember he could sense me thinking too much about my swing and had me step off the ball and relax. Jim caddied in the 2008 Masters for Drew Weaver, a hometown hero who had won the British Amateur the year before. I thought that was really cool. Willow Creek has excellent golf facilities. When I visit town, my dad and I always try to make it out to Willow Creek for a round or at least hit the range. Over the last 25 years or so, the course has almost always seemed to be in great shape. The course was designed by William Byrd who also designed the courses at the Country Club of North Carolina and Atlanta Country Club. I always found Willow Creek to be a challenging course. Its rating/slope is 73.9/139 from the tips at 6,972 yards. There are creeks, ponds, hills, and plenty of trees to navigate. Some of the more picturesque holes are No. 8 (par 3 over water) and No. 18 with the elegant clubhouse in the background. The course fairways and greens (Champion Bermudagrass installed in 2012) are consistently in excellent condition. The practice facilities are terrific. In addition to the all-grass range which has tools such as mirrors and swing plane guides, there is a short game facility (constructed in 2007 which replaced the old pool) and a separate practice putting green. The short game facility has a creek, two bunkers, and two greens with targets aplenty. It's nice. There are also several other little things about the course I like such as the container of cold bottled waters on the first tee and not one, but two compressed air guns players can use to clean off their shoes after a round. The staff is friendly and helpful. As for the food at Willow Creek, it's good too. :)

You may find less expensive lessons elsewhere, but you get what you pay for. After 40,000 hours of instruction, he has seen it all and, more importantly, provides the necessary instruction to overcome your shortcomings and improve your overall game. After three lessons I have experienced significant improvement, recently shooting a net 65. Unheard of for anyone who has seen my game. If you are new to the game, or looking to improve your existing one, I highly encourage you to give him a call. You WILL NOT be disappointed.
