The railway runs for 3 1/2 miles from Haverthwaite Station, along the banks of the River Leven, to Lakeside Station where passengers can board a boat to cruise across Lake Windermere. There is the Station Restaurant at Haverthwaite Station where you can purchase drinks breakfast, coffee or lunch. One of their specialialties are Giant Homemade Scones. I tried one and it was very good. It is definitely a giant scone and I split it with my son. Apparently, they are supposed to have a really good apple pie and sausage made by a local butcher. They also serve their very own locally brewed "Fairburn Ale". It was too early in the morning or I would have tried that. Preston railway station in Preston, Lancashire, England, is a major station on the West Coast Main…read moreLine, roughly half-way between London Euston and Glasgow Central - it is around 200 miles or 2 1/4 hours or so from both - that being said is right in the middle of the two, it is quite an important station, operated by Virgin Trains but I'd even go as far to say this is one of the worst Category B stations I've visited (On the contrast I find the likes of Brighton and Stockport to be the best) The station is mainly used by Virgin Trains who provide routes to destinations such as London, Glasgow and Blackpool but is also used by other services such as Northern (Slow train into Manchester and Greater Manchester towns as well as offering services to Blackpool, York and Liverpool) and TPExpress (fast services into Manchester Piccadilly in 36 minutes, Manchester Airport and Glasgow/Edinburgh. Caledonian Sleeper trains also pass through here, once per day in both directions (London/Scotland) For a nine platform station, it still feels pretty small, unlike virtually every other main train station which is the main one of a city/category B and above there isn't a WHSmith - nor is there much at the station nonetheless other than a few coffees stands with little seating, and a Starbucks which couldn't serve food OR COFFEE! (Come on... are they called Starbucks tea or Starbucks coffee?) The ticket area is pretty small and it does close even at busy times in the evening - meaning it can be hard to find a member of staff. When I did find a staff member they did seem friendly enough even though they had thousands of football fans singing after watching Manchester City defeat Preston North End 3-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup. It is in a good location for the centre, being only a short walk away from the shopping area, and two stops on the bus from the bus station with cabs outside the station. 2* - Poor facilities in the station but a good location, with friendly enough staff for the extra star.

Most carriages are open but some are covered for when the Cumbrian rains come. Most trains are steam hauled by amazing scale models of steam trains - though some services are diesel hauled. Boot itself is a small village (visit the fantastic Boot Inn while you're there) whereas Ravenglass is a fairly sleepy seaside town with a beach area, shops, pubs and restaurants. A fantastic day out is to cycle down the Eskdale cycle path (much of it off-road) from Boot to Ravenglass and then put your bikes on the train and get hauled back up the valley to your starting point. Note though that to carry bikes on the train you do need to book ahead to ensure that they have space available.

I have to…read morehighly praise the platform staff for their excellent customer service, especially on Wednesday 9th July. The young lady asked me what my reserved seat number was, told me where to stand and literally the door was right in front of me when the train arrived. All the staff greeted the passengers on arriving on the platform. One man helped an elderly gentleman with his cases and it genuinely was a pleasure to be on the station. It was also very clean and tidy with a lovely display on Platform 2. Other stations take note. You could learn a lot from the staff at Penrith.

As it is a smaller station, the facilities are minimal, but there is a Subway right by the entrance, and a Morrisons a short walk away, which you may wish to visit before/after your train journey if you have enough time. The station also has a public pass-through, where you can get from the Peel Leisure and Retail Park to Blackburn Cathedral and The Mall, which is handy as you don't need a ticket to pass through - take note the Netherlands! There are ticket machines in the station, and staff on hand for help when needed. Toilets are located on Platform 1 The station is slightly run-down and could do with a bit of a sprucing up. 3* - While not perfect, a decent station for a town the size of Blackburn. Connections into larger stations such as Preston and Manchester are available where there are more facilities and train services.

You can store your bicycle here or rent one out for the day. Some of the walls have been made up by local people with different designs on them.
