What a treat riding in comfort on this lovely railway hauled by a beautiful engine. The breakfast was excellent and, despite limited preparation space and time pressures, the staff were extremely pleasant and cheerful, coped with allergies and requests (although allergies were dealt with in a highly satisfactory manner it is advisable to give them prior notice of any special dietary needs). Back at the station there is a lovely café with a roaring log fire and a gift shop. Many of the station buildings are original and have original features. There is also a miniature railway if you fancy a bit more train time.

The train takes probably 30 mins from station to station, you then have around 30 mins to chill out and look around the station which has a couple of food places, a toy shop and a charity shop (some bargains to be had - 30p a book with me picking up a copy of Trainspotting for this price - I wonder how many olds have accidently bought it thinking they would be reading about the Flying Scotsman and then found themselves fully up to date on the 90's smack scene in Edinburgh...) at £10 a pop for adults (kids under 5 free) it's not cheap but something to do for the day whilst holidaying down here.

As you can see from the pictures I've added this is a very picturesque and authentic station. We went in Summer so the weather was great and the station was fairly busy. You can stand on a nearby footbridge and watch the steam train come in and get a smell of smoke and steam as it passes underneath. This is the first "real" train I've seen in action and it was very impressive. I didn't travel on the itself but the prices were reasonable. Instead I bough a couple of platform tickets so we could have a look around. I don;t know if it's been used in any films but it certainly could be. Preston railway station in Preston, Lancashire, England, is a major station on the West Coast Main…read moreLine, roughly half-way between London Euston and Glasgow Central - it is around 200 miles or 2 1/4 hours or so from both - that being said is right in the middle of the two, it is quite an important station, operated by Virgin Trains but I'd even go as far to say this is one of the worst Category B stations I've visited (On the contrast I find the likes of Brighton and Stockport to be the best) The station is mainly used by Virgin Trains who provide routes to destinations such as London, Glasgow and Blackpool but is also used by other services such as Northern (Slow train into Manchester and Greater Manchester towns as well as offering services to Blackpool, York and Liverpool) and TPExpress (fast services into Manchester Piccadilly in 36 minutes, Manchester Airport and Glasgow/Edinburgh. Caledonian Sleeper trains also pass through here, once per day in both directions (London/Scotland) For a nine platform station, it still feels pretty small, unlike virtually every other main train station which is the main one of a city/category B and above there isn't a WHSmith - nor is there much at the station nonetheless other than a few coffees stands with little seating, and a Starbucks which couldn't serve food OR COFFEE! (Come on... are they called Starbucks tea or Starbucks coffee?) The ticket area is pretty small and it does close even at busy times in the evening - meaning it can be hard to find a member of staff. When I did find a staff member they did seem friendly enough even though they had thousands of football fans singing after watching Manchester City defeat Preston North End 3-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup. It is in a good location for the centre, being only a short walk away from the shopping area, and two stops on the bus from the bus station with cabs outside the station. 2* - Poor facilities in the station but a good location, with friendly enough staff for the extra star.

I knew I'd have to make a stop here on my way home. I love that this small station is so close to all the sights of Saltaire. The Visitor Information Centre is across the street from the station and next to that is the Salts Mill which is now a fantastic gallery of David Hockney's works, an artist's shop, a book shop, a restaurant, and so much more! You'll have to go across to the Salts Mill if you need a drink or snack. This station is so small, there really is nothing there but the train tracks and covered waiting areas on both sides.

The station is located in a grand, old building which in terms of exterior, is one of my favourite buildings in Huddersfield. Station Facts: - It is a Grade I listed building that opened in 1847 - The second busiest station in West Yorkshire, serving around 5 million people per year. - It is served by Transpennine Express who manage the station, with some local services provided by Northern - Get into Leeds in around 20 minutes Destinations served from the station include Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, York, Scarborough and Hull. If you're heading into London, your best bet would be changing at either Leeds, Sheffield or York. The facilities inside the station are basic at best, but the station is reasonable and perfectly fine for a town. The staff inside the station are friendly and up to the standard that you'd usually find around Yorkshire. 3*

According to our local tour guide, the Lakes are set to have 18 million visitors this year. It's quite convenient that there is a direct train from here to Manchester. We came in changing at Oxenholme, but upon leaving, I don't have to do that. I only have to change at Manchester to get to York. It's good too that there is a self Service ticket machine inside. And Booths is next door, where you can get a sandwich or a bottle of water for your journey. You can also catch the Service 599 and other buses to get to Bowness, Ambleside, Grasmere, Keswick and other towns.
