Years ago I posted a review that was deleted when I closed down my Yelp account. But I'd like to post again, for the record. Every once in a while I would search the internet to see if legal action had been taken against Wind, and I would check the reviews here. Today I learned Dr Wind is dead, and there's a glowing tribute to him online on some Yale-related website. I'd like to write this for reasons of balance on behalf of patients he hurt. I was one of the patients who Dr Wind took advantage of during a routine gyn exam. I was in my mid-20s. I had waited maybe 1.5 hours in the waiting room before the pre-exam chat in Dr Wind's office. During our little chat, Wind asked me what I was doing for birth control, and I said I was using condoms. He then said accusingly, "and how does your boyfriend feel about that?" I know now that was a kind of test. I said nothing in response to this, because I wasn't used to speaking up to authority figures at that time. During the actual exam, Wind probed rectally out of nowhere--something I have NEVER experienced before and never experienced since in a gyn exam setting. He gave no warning and did not explain what he was doing. My body produced copious fluids to counter this, and Wind's assistant instructed me to use the restroom immediately following the exam to clean up. I have NEVER had to use a restroom following an annual gyn exam to clean up personal fluids. I felt totally violated and out of my body (aka dissociated) following the appointment to the point where I wasn't sure if I could go back to my office job that afternoon. This event was semi-traumatic and shaped all kinds of future life events and decisions on conscious and subconscious levels. Trust of drs, trust of men, trust of my ability to set boundaries, attitude toward my body, attitude toward intimacy, attitude toward self-worth, you name it. I'm so sorry for anyone else who had horrible experiences with this guy. You're not alone. I hope you can heal a little more knowing he is gone. read more

Several years ago at the beginning of my first pregnancy, I went to see Dr. Richard Wind because a colleague recommended him. I didn't know what to expect since I had never been to a prenatal visit before. But something happened that I've questioned since, and now that I know what normal prenatal visits entail, it has continued to bother me for the past decade. While I was in the exam room sitting on the exam table, Dr. Wind came up to me, cupped the underside of my breasts and bounced them. No warning, reason or explanation given. I thought it was strange. And it turns out it is. Never has a doctor done this to me since. I've had plenty of breast exams, so that's not the issue. This was not a breast exam, and I have no idea what the purpose of it was other than him copping a feel because my bare breasts were right there, and he could. The other interesting thing I've seen written in reviews about Dr. Wind is that he doesn't explain what he's doing during gynecological exams, and worse still, he has given unexpected rectal exams to several of his patients with no warning. Check his Zoc Doc reviews. This did not happen to me, thankfully. But I can tell you that the only time I've received a rectal exam is when I've gone to the proctologist, and I've been going to different gynecologists since I was 16. I'm not opposed to gynecologists giving rectal exams, as I'm sure some doctors find it to be an important part of their exam, but they should at minimum inform you that they're going to do it before doing it. Or here's a thought, ask for their patient's consent prior to giving a rectal exam. At this point in my life, I expect any gynecologists to inform me of what they're going to do before they begin their exam and talk me through what they are doing to my vagina while they're doing it. When you have a doctor examining you without a clear view of what they're doing, it's important that they explain what is going on. Seems pretty standard. Otherwise, odds are you will feel unpleasantly surprised at the least, and very likely uncomfortable and even violated. Anyway, Dr. Wind literally told me that if I wanted a natural birth, I should go to the park to do it. I found that pretty dismissive and unprofessional. So I took his advice and opted for the park instead of going back to him for further groping. Hopefully he's retired by now since it's taken me years to write this review. read more

Doctor Wind billed my preventative checkup under the wrong code and was denied by insurance company. Since I moved to another city and they couldn't contact me, I was actually put on collection service for this! I had pretty comprehensive insurance coverage at the time so it would've been a $20 co-pay, but because they didn't bill it correctly, or contacted me in time. So I am now responsible for $370 fee for the checkup. Reading the other reviews, I have the feeling that he mainly cares about the pregnancy patients. He provided decent care for my limited needs (checkups and birth controls), but can certainly be impatient sometimes. Look elsewhere if you simply want a doctor to take care of your non-pregnancy needs! read more

All these good reviews make you think he is a kind doctor, but my experience with him was not pleasant at all. Here is what happened: I get extremely nervous with these exams and he had difficulty examining me because of that. He was patient and tried to examine me for the first 45 seconds. He stopped, stood up and and said "I can't. I got no time for this. You have to find someone else who can help you" without even looking at me. Okay, I understand he was very frustrated with me. If I were him I would be very annoyed too. But "I got no time for this"? Even my previous gynecologist who had bad reviews did not say that. By the way I seemed to be the last patient for that day. I know I am an annoying patient to an OBGYN, but still, I was able to get examined by my previous doctors. With this doctor I felt rushed and uncomfortable and was not able to relax at all. I should mention to be fair that he did not charge me for this visit (Although I personally interpreted it as "Please do not pay me because I don't want to be your doctor) and his nurse is very nice. If you are a woman who has not seen OBGYN before (if you have never had those exams before) or if you get extremely nervous with such exams, I would not recommend him at all so that you wouldn't end up getting your feelings hurt. I have to mention another thing. I am not American and when I told him that my family member (who is from my home country, obviously) has breast cancer, he looked surprised and said "Really? Women in your country usually don't get breast cancer". Okay, first of all breast cancer is very common in my country. Second of all, I was surprised that a doctor could believe that there is a country where there is no breast cancer. read more

I loved Dr. Wind a lot of the time and I had been a patient with him for about 3 years. I really liked the office initially but then the Doula, Vera embarrassed me several times in the office and made it seem like i was "so fortunate" to be a patient of dr. wind. Towards the end of my being a patient I began feeling more like a number than a patient. He is very abrupt and unfortunately does not explain a lot of results contrary to asking questions. So my overall experience became terrible. read more

WOW! I almost don't want anyone else to know that this guy is the best OBGYN in the history of Doctors! But the guy deserves his props.... He has the best bed side manner ever, he will speak with you for 10 minutes ( every-time,not just your 1st visit) Before any clothes come off. You speak with him in his private office before you get into that room with those stirrups. He really wants you to feel comfortable and he genuinely wants to know what's going on with you and your body. Vera, his right hand gal ( I think she's a nurse practitioner) couldn't be better..I have no fears with them. They don't even take my insurance anymore, But instead of going somewhere else I pay out of pocket because he is so worth it! P.S. Im a full-time student and its about $200- $500 a visit. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my body. read more

Ladies, I understand your concern. Dr. Wind, though a bit rough around the edges at first, is THE ONLY PERSON YOU WANT BY YOUR SIDE WHEN IN LABOR. Ive known him first as my Ob, then my Gyno, so I can only speak to my experience as a nervous woman pregnant with her first child in the age of Google. . Is he abrupt? Yes. Does it feel rushed compared to how long you waited to see him? Of course. But listen, you dont want him to pause. Dr. Wind specializes in older women and high(er) risk pregnancies. His examinations are fast because he knows what to look for - if one thing looks odd, he will pounce. Of course with a first time pregnancy, EVERYTHING feels odd to us, so we need someone to treat us like we are the only woman in the world who has ever been pregnant. But think about it this way...the crazy shit he deals with every day, the crazy shit he sees and new he has to break to women...its a blessing for you AND him when the appointment is short. It means you are healthy. I know it seems like work, but if you want the best out of Dr. Wind talk to him in a language he understands. Ask him about the technology and how its changed since he began. Ask him about the way your body identifies the blood type of a fetus. (Im sure the last thing you want to do with your feet in the air and cold gel on your tummy is soothe the doctor who should be soothing you. But trust me, once you break through that wall, its a great relationship) . And the respect he has earned at Beth Israel makes you proud to be a patient of his. I dont hand out compliments easily and I rarely like people. Just keep this in mind, if you give him another chance, he is seasoned and wants you and your baby to be healthy. read more

Dr. Richard Wind is the best OBGYN! He delivered my beautiful baby boy in June. Dr. Wind is not only kind and caring, he is also very knowledgeable with more than 30 years of experience. I felt always in very good hands. His nurse Vera is such a lovely women and I can't thank them enough for taking such good care of me. read more

Yes, Dr. Wind does have a very long experience. To the point that it's actually time for him to retire. He clearly has lost all patience for patients' worries and questions, and all compassion for their feelings and sensitivity (even on a physical level - none has ever hurt me that much with a vaginal probe or a speculum). After seeing him for the first 6 months of my pregnancy, I have come to find his bedside manner so terrible that I transferred to a new OB, although I was entering my third trimester. His assistant Vera is very nice but worships him so much that it sometimes borders on ridicule, and I think it might have gotten to his head. read more

Dr. Wind took care of me before, during and after two pregnancies. One was a Frank Breech. First, it is uncomfortable going to an OBGYN but it's gotta be done. I've live in California and have had unpleasant experiences with Female OBGYN's here, that when I went back to NY to visit family, I booked my appointment with Dr. Wind, and Vera is still with him (he used to have an office on Spring Street). He's straight forward and so am I. He is a caring doctor and Yes, I recommend him. read more

Dr. Wind is a fantastic doctor. As a person who appreciates knowledge and experience over emotional coddling, he fit the bill perfectly for me. I want to stress that he is a kind, and compassionate doctor who is in very high demand, so if you are looking for a doctor that will spend an hour with you unnecessarily making chit chat, he is NOT you ideal doctor. But if you are looking for someone who will provide you with the facts and practical solutions to your situation, he IS your ideal doctor. He is more focused on providing excellent clinical care to his patient than being their best friend, which is exactly what you want when you are giving birth! Not to say he is devoid of a personality, I personally found him very warm and funny, after we got to know each other a little bit. Short story, he is very busy because he is very good, so take my advice and trust you are in fantastic hands with Dr. Wind. read more

Dr. Wind is an exceptional physician. I've been to many obgyns and none have been as thorough, knowledgable and understanding as him. My situation was not the norm and was quite serious and I greatly appreciate his compassion, I can tell he really cares about his patients and what he does. He gave me as much time as I needed during both my visits and did not make me feel rushed. Even in hurricane sandy while the office had no power and the city was underwater he made himself available to me for an emergency, with the help of his exceptional nurse Vera. I am grateful to have found such a great doctor and highly recommend Dr. Wind. read more

I have been going to Dr. Wind for my annual check up for 20 years. I consider him my primary doctor. Dr. Wind is an excellent surgeon. He is very interested in keeping his patients healthy and cancer free and he is an expert in all areas of women's health. I trust him completely. read more
