Georgia was once full of covered bridges, most built between the late 1700 - 1800's. Sadly decay,…read morefloods and even purposeful mutilation have done away with most of these treasures. There are less than 20 remaining in the state, but in 1997 the County of Rockdale boldly decided to add another to the numbers. Probably more popularly known as the Rockdale County Covered Bridge, it spans a full 150 feet over a historic ford where Mill Rock Creek is located. Jack Turner Dam was to be completed in 1998 to form a reservoir by impound the water from neighboring creeks and rivers. Engineers calculated the creek would swell from just a few inches deep to several feet, thus a bridge would be required. Nearby is also an old historic mill house, a general store, the old mill site and a blacksmith shop according to the Rockdale County website. However, the only visible buildings I saw south of the bridge were clearly marked with no trespassing signs. There is a trail on the north side of the bridge that allows for better side view pictures, but vegetation has grown enough to block most of the view except the very center of the span. FINAL THOUGHTS The County spent almost $900,000 completing the wooden bridge and designed it to look similar to other Town & Lattice styled bridges from the 1800's. It took 248 cubic yards of concrete and 31,000 lbs of steel to form the base columns for the bridge. It utilized Georgia wood and labor in hopes of promoting new timber bridge technology. But after 17 short years, I could see some obvious wear on the bridge floor and need of repairs. Still, it's a marvelous structure, even if it's not exactly historic.

The service was pretty fast we signed up for a card at home then went to go pick it up and browsed around for a while. The guy at the entrance was really nice who was actually checking us in and helping us get our actual card. he provided a lot of information and provided us with a couple of pamphlet that was very helpful. they look like they have a few events that take place there from time to time it is currently still summer. They have different summer programs going on , plus you can tend to register to vote here as well. Anywho my daughter enjoyed herself playing on the computers they had set up for kids in like the kids zone she was able to play games that were already set up on there just as well as they had lots of books to pick from. We would definitely be back. They made a great first impression only downfall that I could say is none of the books that I really wanted to check out was available somewhere on Libby available to be audio read but I actually want the physical book so right now I'm currently in line waiting to get the book that I want.

SMALL TOWN FLAVOR…read more Flowery Branch is a historic railroad town and continues to have several trains driving through the town each day. I discovered the town when I had traveled to the area for a seminar. It was a quiet and peaceful drive and I always thought that I would like to return and explore the downtown area. I recently did just that. The downtown area is very small but it has an antique store, a hair salon, café, bakery, candy shop and other businesses all housed in original structures. Prior to arriving at the shops, you will pass a historic caboose and depot, (built in 1890). Both have been lovingly restored and are currently being used as museums. The depot is also used for weddings, receptions and community events. It can be toured on Saturdays between 11am and 2pm. Just behind the depot you will find Depot Park which is the community green space. It is also where the large Christmas tree has been installed and on this day, additional decorations were being added. Next door to the depot, you will find the Lakeview Art Center which recently installed a mural of a Southern Crescent train on the side of its building. A similar train once ran through the town and is a now a reminder of this period of time. If you want to make the most of your visit to this town, I definitely suggest going when you can tour the caboose and depot, grab a snack from one of the local shops and take a walk down to City Park to enjoy your snack and take in the view!

She asked what place of buisness I needed the permit for I told her and she automatically "without looking or searching" told me it wasn't within city limits. That's just one of the reasons why I came to this place. Now that it's gone.. I don't think I'll come back. As I walked up to the building I noticed the cute little park that is adjacent to the property. This park is the perfect place to stop, relax and gather your thoughts before heading into court. I noticed that on the south side of the building, there is a drive-thru where you can just drive up and pay your fines and fees. Genius! Upon entering the building, you will notice the sunshine streaming in from the massive windows and the cushioned seating beckoning you to have a seat. I love the sweeping stairway that leads up to the planning department and other offices. This building is tastefully decorated in an inviting manner. It was obviously designed with warmth and comfort in mind. You can easily stroll around the building and explore the various departments without disruption. In the upstairs hallway, you will find a display of memorabilia and awards that have been presented to the the city. The people who work here are warm, friendly and inviting. What a pleasure!

The newest library in GCPL's line up. I love this location. Is it is smaller as far as libraries…read morego, but the building is huge as it used to be a high school, now converted to a museum. There's plenty of private work spaces and communal work spaces, but the best part for me are the two pods that they have for parents with Little kids. If you need to get some work done quickly, you can put your toddler or infant in the pod and lock the guard while you sit and do computer work. The only con is that because there are so many windows facing the sun, it tends to get a bit warm inside the library during the summer months. It is great for the view, but a bit uncomfortable at times.
