BUYER BEWARE! I bought discounted meat 4 days from its supposed expiration (7/21 purchased expiration 7/24), took it home and underneath the top rib-eye all the meat had turned grey and slimy. I called them immediately (same day an hour later), was told to freeze it and come into store with receipt and I would be refunded. Upon arriving at the store Angelica in customer service informed me if I had told her (on the phone) it was discounted she would have told me they don't accept returns! What? That is absurd!!! I was rudely berated as if I was some idiot walking in with an outlandish request. The audacity of telling a customer you can hide grey slimy meat under good then refuse to refund the money spent is beyond unacceptable, it's a policy of deception. It's a policy that anticipates you won't complain. I don't eat grey meat, period and I sure wouldn't serve it to guests! I stood my ground stating this was unacceptable and outrageous they would speak to me so disrespectfully. If she could have spit at me and thrown me out of the store she would have done so. She called a manager who I told what the issue was and how rude she was speaking to me and the manager says "She's just doing her job". She then tells me they will only give me a store credit. FTLOG I spend my CASH on grey slimy meat then I'm treated like a dirtbag?! Did she really think I would ever step foot in that store again? I insisted I be reimbursed the same way I paid which was cash via my debit card. Anyone else without my balls to stand up for what is right would have lost their hard earned money. Probably my favorite grocery store here in Chico. Have been frequenting this store for years, most frequently in summer [when I don't work as much] and during the holidays. The store has everything you'd need to put on a successful holiday dinner. And you won't be breaking the bank - prices are low. Who doesn't want low prices? The best times to come here are early in the morning [my preference] and late at night [careful, many products are depleted at that time and the deli is closed]. Their deli and hot food sections are excellent - can't miss those. They have so many tasty snacks. I would often come here, get a bunch of the ready-made foods and save them for my work lunches. They also have excellent BBQ chicken, they also offer fried, and chicken strips! Sometimes, on the weekends, I come in and get a 24-piece chicken, macaroni & cheese and some chicken strips. Of course I don't eat it all myself. My family and I do. And we love it. Bakery section you can't miss either. They have delicious bagels: regular, fruity, blueberry, etc. And they have cakes, donuts and many other delectable treats. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Everything is easy to find here. Store is large and spacious. Pretty easy to maneuver your cart around here, but the store does get busy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Workers here are more than helpful. Winco Foods stands equal to just about any market. Accepting mainly cash makes it one of the few. Selections are plentiful and prices fair. Personnel mostly at the registers so far so good. Now with pizza services might have to try one. They still beat everyone in a nice quality deli type ham. Taste as good as the most expensive. My parents who are over 70 years old were verbally assaulted while loading their groceries on the belt and continually assaulted while trying to leave the store after paying. The other couple who assaulted them were in their 40's and during this time my mother was pleading for them to stop. Not one winco employee stepped in to help and calm the situation. On the way walking out the door the young couple were blocking my parents from exiting the store and started a physical altercation. My dad was spit in the face and had numerous punches thrown at him and left with a torn t-shirt. The woman punched my mom in the back of the head which knocked her glasses off her face. If any of Winco's employees would have stepped in to deescalate this situation when it was happening at the checkout, my parents would have not been assaulted. Shame on you Winco! read more

I wish there was a negative rating. As a disabled person with a very bad knee that is swollen and in a brace, I tried to shop there. The electric carts are not working properly or were not charged properly. Two had broken wheels. You also have to walk past all of the cashiers to get to the carts. As a disabled person does that make sense? No. If I could easily walk that far I would not need the cart. So my husbands second cart went from a full battery to empty within TEN MINUTES! He parked it and went to the car. I added about 13 (I counted) items and went to self check out so he didn't have to sit in the cold for long. After waiting ten minutes in line I was told I had to change lines to a checker because they don't have a scale to weigh the ham. BUT THE HAM WAS ALREADY PRICED. AND THE LINES WERE TEN PEOPLE DEEP WITH CHRISTMAS SHOPPING! I asked if she had a better solution and she said no go get in line. Between her attitude and my husband sitting in the cold I left the groceries to just go home. At the exit I ran into a manager. I told him they are not ada accommodating. He said "YES WE ARE!" Not even asking what I meant. I explained two of the carts were dying within minutes of being a full charge and two had bad tires. He said he had no idea and that I could get a regular cart. And sarcastically. I may not look disabled but I have had three knee surgeries in two years. He could not have cared less. I called the home office complaint department. She said I had to call legal. I asked if she was the complaint department why wouldn't she ask them to call me to try and make a customer feel better with a solution. She said it's not their process. I asked about a human process where the business says, "I'm so sorry you feel like that!" Meaning you might be wrong but I hear you. Nope. I wish there was a Winco in our area. I like saving money too. While visiting the area, we decided to make dinner for our hosts and hit up the local grocery store. This store was unassuming. Never heard of it or been to it, but as soon as I saw the enormous selection I became a fan. We bought a huge tri-tip steak, potatoes, corn and such for dinner and couldn't believe how inexpensive it was. We saw some lobster on sale and planned to come back before we left. We went back and stocked up on the lobster tails, steak and ribs. I bought grains from the bulk area including polenta and four different types of rice. Buying bulk spices, grains and pasta saves a lot of money over packaged goods. The lobster was fantastic for $7.50 for two frozen lobster tails and so tasty when we put it on the grill. Pretty much everything I bought exceeded my expectations because of the price. I'm just not used to deals that great. Minus one star for not opening up a store near my house!!!! j/k ; ) read more

Winco has been my go-to grocery store for many years but no more. It is VERY disappointing to see Winco is now making zero efforts in adhering to social distancing and mask mandates. I can't believe Winco has slipped so badly over the past month or so. At the start of the virus pandemic, Winco was awesome. Entry was limited. Social distancing was required. All employees wore masks and there were hand sanitizer stations in the store. Nowadays, HA! None of that exists. So many employees are not wearing masks as they handle food. Why is that? No social distancing at the front door. No hand sanitizer stations. Nothing! It's a damn mandate for Pete's sake and of all places, I really thought Winco would keep up the good work and provide its loyal customers with a safe place to shop. If you're from LA you have no idea what WinCo is. If you know what WinCo is you're probably wondering why 4 stars!? I go to WinCo for very few items. I drink distilled water and they have gallons for 76 cents. Can't beat that. They also have local all natural (no nitrates/nitrites) sausage. I forget the brand name but you'll see it in the Chico store in the sausage section. They also have a good cereal selection. Lastly is their bakery. They have great dinner rolls and delicious poppy seed muffins. Try not to go on the first of the month or during the weekend at all. read more

Winco is a god send. When we first moved to town, we shopped at Safeway for most things, not realizing there was a much cheaper alternation in town. But once we found it, we have hardly shopped anyway else. They have name brands for cheap! Their produce and meat aren't bad if you use within a reasonable time frame. Their beer and wine are very cheap and they have a decent selection. If you haven't shopped here, you need to check it out. Even if you buy meat and produce somewhere else, you should check it out for all your other grocery needs. read more

While there is nothing aesthetically-pleasing about this place, they are cheap and they have a wide array of grocery and household items. You may even be surprised with an organic selection in some areas. You may leave with a slight case of PTSD from your experience but you will have more cash in your wallet than if you went somewhere else. Deli department is always 50/50, you're either getting the witch lady or the nice lady with the glasses. Good luck to you.... Checkout is sometimes crazy, depends on when you go, if you're going anytime around the 1st or 15th of the month, expect crowds. If you go later in the evening, say after 8, you will have less people but employees stocking and some empty shelves. Best time to shop is early in the morning from what employees have told me. Sure you have to bag your own groceries and at peak hours it can be overcrowded, but if you find a time that works for you when it's not too busy, it's definitely worth it. Parking isn't too hard either because they have a huge lot. I have had far too many negative interactions with employees here in the few times I've come in. I'm always very polite to people, especially strangers, but many of the workers here seem to just be rude people in general. I had gone through self checkout last time I went here, which is 15 items or less, with a box of ramen. In the past, I had been told I could just scan the whole box as one item. This time, the woman in the self checkout came over and angrily told me I can't bring more than 15 items through self checkout. I apologized and told her that other employees had told me I could scan the box as one item. She then admitted that I could, but went on and on about how much of a hassle it is for them to scan it as one and how we're slowing her down when she needs to be doing other things. I probably got less than ten words in during the exchange, as she just kept complaining about my inconvenience to her. Another time, at the same self checkout area, my girlfriend and I had both put our groceries together in one cart. Total, we had around 20-23 items. We intended to pay for our items separately, which would obviously be less than 15 each. When the rude male employee with long hair saw our cart, he (not so nicely) told us we can't use self check out. We tried to tell him we were making two separate transactions, but he just kept shaking his head and yelling over us, saying "It doesn't work like that!". The store was busy at the time, and we had probably waited ten minutes in the self checkout line, but he didn't care and made us get in another long line. read more

I live down the street this has been my daily grocery. I went in last night to buy liquor, as i usually do. We are here in a Pandemic and required to wear face masks or we cannot enter a building. I have a local great grandmother who is 93 that i stay healthy for. I stay healthy because I am a caregiver in this community for your at risk family members and elder's. The first checker asked me to take my mask off and show identification "i need to tell in your eyes." I had no glasses or sunglasses or anything covering them btw. I calmly said I would not and she said she wouldn't be selling to me then. I asked for a supervisor to come speak with me then. She said none were available if i wanted to speak with him I have to wait in line 7 where he's checking. I finally got to him in line and he asked me to take my mask off and i explained that i would not be and that i work with adults with compromised immune systems and he took the item out of my hands and said "No, I'm not selling to you." Next in line behind me was my boyfriend, only older than me by 13 months and the supervisor does not ask for his ID, or to take his mask off and let's him through no problem & no questions asked with his beer. read more

What Winco lacks in quality they make up for in prices and quantity. The food is a mix of brands familiar and unfamiliar. Every Winco is pretty much the same in setup and design, so you only need visit one location to know exactly what to expect at them all. The Winco in Chico fits the formula: a huge warehouse/grocery store with aisles and aisles of cheap product. It helps when you need to load up for, say, an economical weekend of barbecues and camping. But if you are seeking quality foods, like organic products, look elsewhere. This is never my first choice when grocery shopping, but I appreciate that Winco's are always located where I need them to be. read more

VERY low prices overall. For example I buy a lot of Kikkoman organic soymilk and Winco has the lowest price by far of anywhere else. I mean other places charge at least 25 - 150% higher. As with all stores one has to watch what they buy as Winco does have a few items that are not always the absolute lowest price. Why buy beer and other packaged foods costing elsewhere 10-50% more? Buying it elsewhere because one wants to buy only at :local stores? Why do that when most truly "local" stores in Chico pay less to their employees and give no benefits. I do recommend buying local produce at local stores however non organic bananas and the like just buy them at Winco and pay a lot less. Free range eggs identical brands as carried elsewhere are at least 25% less in price at Winco and they are starting to carry upgraded foods and not just the lowest quality stuff.. I also like the fact that they have such a great turnover with their foods (yes, they are a very busy store) and so unlike so many small Mom and Pop local stores most of Winco's packaged foods aren't old and nor about to expire as far as date of expiration. Unlike some small store that I have found hiding or even erasing expiration dates, Winco is up and up when it comes to that. I agree with some reviewers that organics are better and so best to buy your fresh organics locally. Just don't fall for getting ripped off by the other stores both big and small who don't pay their employees anymore than Winco (using the "buy from us because we're local" advertising hype) and charging as much as twice the price for the same identical basic packaged foods. Parking at Winco also is a breeze as they have a giant parking lot. Worst times to shop there is on the weekends and the days that welfare checks come out. They don't take credit cards however do take debit cards. Nice that they give us some credit if we bring your own bags. We do have to bag our own stuff and they don't offer to carry out our groceries to our car nor do they ask how to pronounce your name when you use your debit card (unlike most Safeway employees who are required to pretend to care in order to justify their much higher prices).
