Truck stops and diners -- you can't beat them for hearty breakfasts done right, and Winchester goes above and beyond. We had a group of 10 staying nearby at Hickory Hills Campground, and they quickly put some tables together and seated us. The staff is friendly and really goes out of their way to be helpful. I had heard that the country-fried steak was amazing (one of our group got it - plate-sized, and covered with sausage gravy). It sounded good to me, but I was in the mood for a skillet, so I got the Ponderosa (best of two worlds) -- hash browns, country-fried steak, sausage gravy, and eggs. Absolute heaven (and a lot of food). Two in our group got the ham steak, which looked incredible (also covering an entire plate). They loved it. We stopped for gas on Sunday morning, saw this local eatery and decided to try breakfast. We both had omelettes which were very good. The service...waitstaff was amazing! Three ladies worked together, were friendly and attended to our coffee and water and everything else we wanted. We'll return next year when we drive north for sure! read more

Great little diner in a truckstop. Great food alternative a reasonable price. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Restaurant is clean and comfortable. I ordered the 18 wheeler breakfast which consists of an 18oz chopped steak, 3 eggs, choice of potatoes and toast. My meal was prepared as ordered and came out of tge kitchen in a timely manner. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. I stopped here based on a recommendation from a friend. I'm glad I stopped and will be sure to stop again when I'm in the area. read more

I give this restaurant 2 1/2 stars. Ordered the BLT with side of salad. Was surprised the waitress did not ask me what kind of bread I wanted. Got white instead of sourdough. Both were small. Waitress wasn't friendly at all. Maybe they downsized the meals due to the inflation. Unusual on three counts--super friendly service, a sit-down hot meal at a gas station, and a history lesson in commemorative Winchester rifles. As a West Coast suburbanite, I do get freaked out by gun displays in sporting good stores, but fear not--these guns are safely behind glass cases, and not a single one of the other customers asked the staff if they could try them. Folks who want real food with visible vegetables will be very happy with the menu. My Caesar chicken wrap came with nice fresh lettuce, creamy dressing, and chicken breast chunks. I struggled a bit to hold it together, but that also means that it was freshly made, not shipped in from somewhere else and wrapped in tight cellophane. My vegetable soup was a little salty, but it included vegetables like celery. It was hot, and assembled on site. I've included a photo too. The service was attentive and very friendly. Even though it was next to a gas station, local regulars were chatting with the staff. Even though my husband and I were not regulars, we got the same friendly service. I was a little surprised to see pictures of John Wayne all over the restaurant. The statue at the John Wayne Airport shows him with a pistol, not a rifle. But thanks to the winchesterguns.com website, I now know that he did indeed carry a Winchester rifle in one of his movies. It might have been interesting to see pictures of other people who used Winchester rifles, including Oliver Fisher Winchester. So, my takeaway: solid hot food, friendly service, and the start of a history lesson. A great alternative to the usual roadside food choices. read more

We went here for breakfast after hearing amazing things about this place. All the hype that we heard about this place were very true! The staff are super friendly and make sure you have everything you need. Food was amazing as well! This place is attached to a truck stop but is still amazing. We had the Full Stack (3 pancakes,meat,eggs), country fried steak, biscuits and gravy, and the chili omelet. All the food was amazing and the portions were quite large. The largest was the 10 oz country fried steak which took three people to finish . I highly recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a good breakfast! read more

The breakfasts are pretty good here. I highly recommend the country fried steak if you like those. It is so big it has a platter of its own. Fairly typical diner food and service. I've had a few different items here but usually stick to breakfast. I've had family members say the burger is good. I've had the prime rib special which was good for a diner but doesn't compare to a supper club or chop house that specializes. Salad is pretty average, more of a side salad. All in all I recommend this if you're not opposed to diner food. It is attached to the truck stop so gets plenty of trucker business as well as locals. Parking is sometimes hard to find up next to the restaurant when it is busy but you can always park on the big truck side near the road. A walk is good for you after that country fried steak. read more

Winchester Restaurant was your standard truck stop restaurant. We stopped in for dinner on a Saturday and I was looking forward to trying their tuna melt. After placing our order the waitress disappears and returns to tell me they didn't have any tuna salad prepared and didn't want to make any due to the dinner rush. I thought that was odd because wouldn't you want to have everything available at dinner time? It wasn't a problem and I ordered the chicken strips with hashbrowns and I also got a cup of chili with that. Everything was good and it was more food than I needed in one sitting so it provided lunch the next day as well. Winchester provides a "safe" menu and you can probably find plenty of options for the kids. It would be a good stop with elderly parents because of the familiar menu, but I'd skip it if you're taking that someone special out for dinner. read more

Winchester is one of our favorite spots for comfort food! Chicken fried steak is the size of a platter and delicious, but my favorite is the tuna melt. Some of the employees have been there 20+ years and the service is always great. My only criticism is that the carpet is so gross and it doesn't seem like owners keep up with maintenance like they should. read more

A good stop for me. I had myself a good hot breakfast and this rare for me on the road. Country fried steak and eggs not to shabby. Now we aren't talking cut and breaded back there in the kitchen but is was good. Larger then I was expecting filled a plate of its own. So much I could eat it all. I asked for my browns to be on the crispy side and poof I had crispy Browns. 4 stars for the frozen cut of beef and the gawd awful construction going on out there. When you seem to be in the middle of nowhere, never fear. Somewhere around the next bend there will probably be a truck stop; perhaps it will even have a quaint family restaurant attached, such as The Winchester. We came in on a late afternoon, and the dining room was almost empty, so service and speed was optimal. I ordered the roast beef dinner, which came with your choice of soup or salad, potato and vegetable of the day. Now I was not looking for creativity or gourmet food, but the was unbelievably standard. Most truck stops have at least one item that has a homemade taste to it; not so much here. Everything just comes off the the GFS truck (or similar such supplier) to be thawed and reheated. The beef was curly-edges strips, and the potatoes were too smooth to be anything but mass prepared or instant. It was then covered in a dark, salty brown gravy. My vegetables were the simple mixed variety, but the vegetable soup was hot and good. The coffee was fabulous, but I think there is nothing better than truck stop coffee! The walls of the place are adorned with old Winchester (hence the name of the place) rifles, some even of museum quality, each encased in glass with a brief history of each firearm. read more

There was a McDonalds and that says it all if that's a preferred restaurant over Winchester's. Don't let the romantic name fool ya! I have eaten at this truck stop on several occasions. On Friday nights they have an excellent fish fry, especially for those who like nice deep fried, white cod fish, it's delicious! I have also had the prime rib special they serve on Saturday nights. The prime rib is not quite as thick of a cut as some places may serve, but nevertheless it is tender and tasty and served with all the trimmings. The thing I enjoy the most is their breakfast, which are served all day long anytime of the day. The pancakes are light and flavorful, and in my opinion are some of the best pancakes in the area. Many of their breakfast specials are served with yummy golden brown hash browns or American fried potatoes. All in all, the food there is very good and there are many things to choose from including country fried steak and biscuits and gravy. If you are looking for a place to dine and have never been there before, I highly recommend it. The waitresses and staff are all pleasant and try to make sure your coffee cup is always full. I took one star off because the carpet needs attention, probably due to all the truck drivers who frequent the establishment. I'm kinda fussy about that stuff, but it certainly in no way reflects on my opinion of the food served or the friendly service. read more

Stopped here about 10 pm after long day of travel not expecting much being a truck stop. Got what I expected a warm gravy covered plate while listening to the two waitresses bicker back and forth at one point talking about mammograms. If the food wasn't being walked thirds me I was going to walk out. Go 15 more mins and go to pine cone much better and has a bakery. read more
