Unfortunately, LA Fitness as a business has been the complete opposite. The gym constantly has broken machines, sinks that don't work, a front door thats broken for weeks, and there hasn't been hot water for nearly two weeks. Then, today, I walked in and found out the gym is closing permanently on November 20, giving members just 17 days' notice. I recently paid $720 for 9 personal training sessions and $118 for the annual membership fee, both of which I can't use now. My trainer told me he's out of town until after the gym closes, so I literally cannot use what I already paid for. When I spoke with Jessica Zavala, the District Operations Manager, she refused a refund and kept repeating the fine print of the contract, like she was a lawyer. She said I could "just go to another club" or "pick a new trainer." I don't have transportation. The only reason I'm able to work out at this gym is because my wife drops me off on her way to work. I didn't sign up to start over with a different trainer or go to a different gym miles away. I paid for this location, with this trainer, and expected LA Fitness to operate in good faith. This is incredibly unethical and shows zero integrity. A multi-billion-dollar company should not be hiding behind contract technicalities while closing a gym with barely two weeks' notice and refusing to refund customers for services they can't possibly use. All I want is a fair refund for what I didn't get.

I rejoined in January and visit almost daily. The good: -It's reliably easy to find open, available equipment. -The hours are good. -The music mostly doesn't suck (but I still bring ear buds and my own playlist). -It's close to home. -I can't beat $10 a month (though they've raised rates for new members). The less good: -Overall upkeep of equipment isn't fast or great. I have to check treadmills to see if they're level before starting a workout. It took months for a soap dispenser to be replaced in the women's locker room. The scales were removed (with no plans to replace them) from the locker rooms. -There is absolutely *zero* enforcement of the rules unless you complain to a staff member. People are constantly FaceTiming or listening to their music without ear buds. Staff members will walk by and not address it, which sucks for those of us who don't want to be on camera with someone's BFF or situationship or listen to someone's going out playlist from 2003. I'm not planning on leaving anytime soon, so clearly the cheap monthly rate and tolerable atmosphere has a hold on me, but it would be nice to see some actual engagement from the staff in making this a better experience.

I visited Midtown before as a prospective member so I know that guests can only enter a limited number of times. We went upstairs past the cardio machines (they are plentiful) and the weight area to the cafe. There are tables and booths that overlook the outdoor pool area (closed for season). It wasn't a large brunch but we had some made-to-order omelets, bacon/sausage and fruit. There was also some potatoes and pastry. When I sat down to eat I received a text from Midtown about a membership. The brunch was bottomless although one omelet was enough for me. I also had two emails from Midtown when I got home, one a waiver of liability and the other a membership offer. I didn't join as a member on my previous visit and I am not going to join now. I already have a Pilates membership that includes three studios with classes from 6am-8pm. Midtown has a Pilates studio but none of the class times work for me. They also have some reformers in the middle of the cardio area reserved for private lessons. If I have a private lesson I would prefer to be in a secluded area, not in the middle for all to see. The facility has many machines, a boxing area, a cycling studio, a theatre, a spa, a cafe, courts, pool, etc and this is a great place for those who need this. There are families who spend the morning at lessons, classes, workouts, then join up in the cafe. This is great for those who are looking for this but it doesn't fit my needs right now.

Almost 3 years ago, I was recommended by a friend of mine to check out FIT Boutique and immediately decided to purchase a ten-session package - the prices are very fair. The gym was a new environment for me; there was so much to learn, and I was just a beginner. The owner, Jim, made me feel comfortable and welcomed whenever I stepped foot in FIT Boutique, answering any questions I had regarding exercise. As an all-around very friendly and knowledgeable guy, Jim really motivated me to continue pursuing strength and good health for years to come! My goals when signing up included building muscle, endurance, and strength. My trainer, Shane, instituted growth in me through a vast amount of exercises that helped me reach my goals, and after just the first 2 sessions I was beginning to see the results I wanted. Throughout the process, he motivated me to push myself, and also made sure I felt good after each workout. Needless to say, this was a life-changing period of time for me as I gained skills, perfected form, and I continue to learn exercises. I definitely recommend you check out FIT Boutique!

After my first session, the first time working out in way too long, it was difficult pressing the button on my garage door opener. Since then I am no longer destroyed after my sessions, but know that I have had a good workout. Jim, the owner and my trainer has been cool and flexible with my schedule and has provided just the right amount of motivation without making things unpleasant. The price is a bit expensive, but you are paying for good equipment in a convenient location, and one-on-one time with a professional. When I am there, the gym is not crowded and the music has been good. Try it out - as far as I know, the $100 for 8 1 hour personal training sessions is still going.
