With the main Long Beach library within walking distance of our home, my wife and I rarely go any…read moreof the satellite branches unless for a special event. The Long Beach library seems to be at the forefront of expanding Filipino heritage in our area, thanks to community activists. One of the latest accomplishments was the opening of the Filipino American Cultural Heritage Collection at the Bret Harte Neighborhood Library in West Long Beach. We couldn't stop by its grand opening on May 31, but was able to stop-in a few days after to check it out. It was great, making me proud that we live in a city that is able to celebrate its diversity. It had the largest display of books authored by Filipinos or about Filipino-Americans that I have seen in the area, occupying a decent size alcove room near the front. There are prominent signs announcing its location, along with free bookmarks, stickers, and badges. Between the 3 of us, we checked out quite a few books to peruse at home, which is a big change from our usual reading of content strictly on-line. Almost forgot...the library is named after a famous Californian author, poet, and newspaper man, who lived during the California gold rush. He lived during the times of strong anti-Chinese racism and Mark Twain, with whom he had a complicated and adversarial relationship. Learnt a bit more (not nice) things about Mark Twain as well. Also learned that there are elementary schools named after Harte in both Long Beach and Burbank, but also in Chicago, IL (not sure why).

Tiny but mighty library that is hosting many cool and relevant events to the community. Very cool…read moreto see this branch thriving. Love they feed kids during the summer and always have the AC on.

You must join but the annual fee is reasonable. They have two major events and these help hem be low cost to the community. We do most of the summer events and folks that are not members can pay to do activities and just pay more than a member. pearl, Melissa, Tony and Kyle are great staff. I am forgetting some, sorry.

I've been a member of the Community Center for a few years now. They offer many different programs…read morefor all ages. But due to work, I have only been able to take a few classes throughout the years. But I do love the variety of classes that they offer and how constant their schedule is. If you are looking for a Japanese school for your child to attend, they offer that. If you would like to just learn more about the community through the different cultural classes, just sign up for the emails and you can be alerted for upcoming classes that they offer. I've taken amigurumi (crochet), ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement), and a cooking class. All of the instructors are great and mostly volunteers. So it just shows you what a great community there is. They have festivals through the year and also help put on the West Covina Cherry Blossom Festival. They also host the West Covina obon at the center but it is organized by the Buddhist church which is based out of the community center. So there is just a lot of activities that you can get involved with.
