I have been a patient at Austin Pain for many years. Dr. Wills is my doc, and I see his PA Mary Jo Hart every month. Both of them have been amazing to me over the years, and I don't think you will find a more kind, competent and compassionate duo (in any practice, not just pain management).
I have seen some negative reviews & wanted to share my experience because there is only 1 thing that people ever have to complain about. Dr Wills runs behind from time to time. BUT, he is worth waiting for. There are 2 kinds of drs when they are behind schedule- the kind that try to rush you in and out the door in 2 minutes so they can get back on track, and the kind like Dr Wills. He takes as much time as your problem requires and doesn't make you feel like he just wants you to get out of there so he can punch out at 5pm. I just saw him the other day and it was after 6pm by the time he got to me. He could have told me I had to reschedule, but he didn't. So, if you are lucky enough to get in to see him, just bring a magazine and be prepared to wait- it will be a bonus if you don't have to :) When you have an emergency and they fit you into his schedule instead of making you wait a week to see him when you are in severe pain, you will appreciate his accommodation and understand why he gets behind. I repeat: he is worth waiting for.
Austin Pain has helped me through 10 surgeries over 2 years & the RSD I ended up with after nerve surgery. I regularly see Mary Jo in Georgetown and she is pretty much always exactly on schedule. She is awesome and there is no healthcare professional I would recommend more highly than her. She knows everything about my medical history AND my life- without having to look it up on a chart. She has been incredibly compassionate and you can tell that she got into medicine for the right reason- to help people. I have never once felt judged or disbelieved regarding my medical issues (which, unfortunately, happens frequently). She has helped me with all kinds of time consuming issues like disability paperwork for my employer, workers compensation paperwork, medication overrides, and school accommodations after I got fired for an on the job injury. The staff does so much other stuff besides just seeing patients and writing prescriptions. As my life began unraveling & I was fighting to save my career, my retirement and my quality of life, Mary Jo was the one person that I felt like was my advocate.
After having so many surgeries in such a short period of time, I feel like a "professional patient" since I'm at the dr office or physical therapy so frequently. I've seen many people unnecessarily blow up at the staff at Austin Pain. So, if you find yourself in need of a pain dr, here are some helpful tips:
*You will be drug tested every month. Be prepared to give a urine sample. They don't give you your prescriptions until you do, so drink a bunch of water before your appt.
*Don't yell at the front desk staff because the doctor is running behind schedule. They can't fix that. I've seen a few staff members get yelled at and be nothing but nice in return, and it makes me feel really bad for them.
*Even if the dr is running behind, you are required to be there no more than 10 minutes late. If you are late, they will make you reschedule, or you will have to sit in the waiting room and be seen last, at the end of the day. It was my fault, but no lie-it did suck to have to wait that long.
*They are hip to all of the excuses folks give about why they need their meds refilled early. If you find that you get your meds "stolen," "dropped in the toilet," or "lost" month after month, they will very easily figure out that you are not taking your meds as prescribed. I have found Austin Pain to be quite reasonable about changing dosing for new injuries or surgeries & haven't had any problems. But, you must go in and see a provider to get the med dosing changed. If you just decide to double your dose, you will run out of meds early. They have to authorize it before you up the dose. Frequently, the irate people in the office that scream at the staff created the situation they are in. & then go post negative reviews. They give you a bunch of paperwork when you are a new patient- read it, follow the rules and you won't have problems.- you will like them a lot and probably be very grateful for the services they provide you. I know I am.
Hope some of that helps- it is really hard to find a good medical practice these days, but Austin Pain is one of them [actually, they are great, not just good]. I have nothing to,disclose- I wrote this simply because they have improved my quality of life dramatically & I am eternally grateful. read more
