Last year we bought a quarter cow from Buds Meats with the cow from Stemple Creek. We had a great experience with them and tried to do it again this year but they weren't taking orders, which led us to Willowside. We opted this year to do a half cow, which now seems to me probably overly optimistic, but that's what we did. We wanted grass fed/grass finished which is usually more expensive and harder to get, but Willowside told us no problem and we put down the $100 deposit. It seemed like almost overnight they were able to get all the stars aligned to get the cow ready and they were already calling me for preferences on cuts. I love the attention to detail we were given on education of different things, because for me having been a vegetarian for many years, this is a lot of info building still. We found out our cow topped the scales at over 800 lbs so our half share was about 412 or so and cost about $2300. We opted for vacuumed packed rather than butcher paper, and gave them our preferences on size of cuts. When we arrived to pick everything up we did have some challenges with making sure we had everything - I was told it would be 8 boxes but it only ended up being 6, and we couldn't find the bone marrow which was one of the big selling points for the half cow. Undaunted we took our prizes home and I set out packing two complete freezers full of meats and bones. I have yet to try the beef but it looks beautiful. Overall it was a good price, quick turn around, and I especially liked that the grass fed cows come from Full Circle Ranches which is in Petaluma and is run by a friend of the owner of Willowside so that's good local business. Unfortunately, unless things change or there was a mistake, I won't be going back. I had been extremely happy with their frozen dog food, which is basically scrap meat that is frozen. About a year ago it was $3.50 a pound. Then it went to $4.50 a pound a few months ago. Now it's $6.99 a pound!!! that's almost double the price in a year. I told the woman there must've been a mistake with pricing and she said no. She says it takes a lot of work to do it. I'm confused. Isn't it scrap meat that is put into a bag and sealed and frozen? This isn't a regular butcher shop. Everything is frozen and vacuum sealed. The sausages were tasty, the chorizo bacon was a treat but I wasn't going to spend $20 per pound for frozen sirloin steak. Seemed kinda pricey but it has such a good reputation. I had to try it out. It's just not for me. I'd rather pick out fresh steaks and meats. It's a small cute place though. Last week I was looking for the perfect Prime Rib for Christmas Dinner. I was having a hard time trying to find the right size that wasnt too large. I ran into someone at work who happens to raise steer and she suggested Willowside, well I am glad she did! I was pleasantly suprised to see the price for local prime ribeye roast was only $23.99/LBS, which was less than Safeway, and only a few more dollars than Costco (for much better quality). I ordered the roast over the phone and my wife picked up. She said it was very clean and everyone was extremely nice and helpful. She also picked up some delicious jerky. I wrapped the roast in cheese cloth and rested it for a week. Luckily I cooked it perfectly rare-medium rare. It was incredibly tender, easily the best prime rib i have ever had! My Dad paid for the roast and has high standards, so I was anxious for his response. He just kept repeating how tender and flavorful it was. My dad stopped at one point, leaned over and said, "I think you found a new butcher!" I think he is right! read more

Fresh good meat selection. We picked up some ribeye on two occasions. Second time I asked a sales person to advise if they had smoked sausages, she pointed me to frozen section. After tripe checking with her if it was smoked and ready for consumption, we bought it. Guess what, it was raw and not smoked. Piece of advice, trust your own eyes. Ordered a 1/2 beef and these guys nd gals did the butcher work. There were mistakes here and there like I got bbq ribs when I told her short ribs on the cutting instructions. And I didn't get offal when I said I definitely wanted oxtails and tongue. I also didn't get my flank steaks. We ordered a 7 bone standing rib roast and it was fantastic. Chris's expertise, customer service and helpful advice made the whole experience exceptional. Every staff member we communicated with was caring and knowledgeable. The quality of the beef was top notch. Unfortunately, they were out of prime grade, but the Choice grade that I was offered was marbled and beautiful. We smoked half and oven roasted half and both were succulent and deeply flavorful. It's hard to pick a favorite - because their are two Santa Rosa butcher shops that I especially love. I always go to Willowside first to find duck. And while there, I always end up buying other proteins that I enjoy cooking with. The meat is some of the best and the staff are always helpful and friendly. My wife and I had been raising sheep for a couple years and it finally came time to harvest. We procrastinated quite a long time because we really do love our sheep. The mobile butcher came on time and they were willing to navigate the narrow road across my flooded pasture to the barn. My two wethers were harvested quickly and humanely, it was difficult to say goodbye to them but we don't have any room for pets. About a week later we went to pick up our meat and it was cut just how we wanted, vacuum sealed, frozen, and packed into boxes. The end product was delicious as well. I've been by a few times to help supplement for some of the dietary needs for my partner. So far we've been able to snag bones for broth and fat for tallow. They've been helpful with any questions that we had over the phone, and sending questions via their website they'll get back to you within a day. So far so good, and they're really close to us so it has been easy to grab anything quick. The inside is a small front register with lots to choose from as far as different cuts of meat and seasonings to boot. Prices were reasonable comparatively as well. read more

We had no prior experience with this butcher shop, as we are in Glenn County and have used local shops as well as ones in the Red Bluff area. We bought a pig and had it processed through Willow Side. Our initial phone conversation was great. The woman on the phone mentioned to me twice how their paper wrapped meats were excellent and that's the way she suggested we did ours. All of our meats for many years have always been plastic sealed but since she recommended I went with that because we had no prior knowledge of this shop. I received a call from them about a week later saying it was ready. Told her we weren't able to come get it since we were baling hay and we're also 4 hours away one way trip. I called back and said it would have to be the following week and she got huffy. She called me a few days later and said when are you coming to pick up your pig? ( mind you this was only still a week and a half after it was done) we had a relative pick it up and bring it to our ranch. Here's where the one star comes in. Every package of paper wrapped meats were gray and smelled like OLD PORK!!! I've waited so long to write this review to go through the pork we had done and give an accurate description of our horrible experience. Pork chops, pork roasts, pork ribs (pictures from last night) all stink like old pork, the only thing that doesn't stink is the bacon, which oddly has black pepper like spots throughout the fat (not pepper) and are in plastic sealed packages. The pork sausage is crumbly and gray with dry fat chunks in it. The smoke flavor on the bacon and smoked meats is nonexistent. The pig was raised by a family members friend and was well taken care of. This product can't possibly be from a year old pig. The ribs pictured below are as I opened the package for dinner last night. It smelled old, weird chunky dry fat and not trimmed very well in our opinion. Makes you wonder where the meat we received came from? I've read a lot of reviews for this establishment and honestly don't know why we had such a horrible experience in comparison to others. You walk inside to the most beautiful enclosed multideck fridges of both fresh and frozen meat. With lots of different pre-marinade options. They cut meat fresh daily - be sure to ask when you walk in - what's fresh from that morning? As it might not be on display yet. They also have Tomahawk steaks and lots of wagyu choices! We were greeted immediately and the team member managing the front expertly answered all of our questions - she was so friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable! Probably the easiest 5 star review possible. We purchased a whole lamb from Stemple Creek Ranch and had it processed at Willowside Meats. Amanda called, and we went through the process so efficiently and quickly. The meat was ready when she said it would be, so I drove over, went to the counter - I also had no idea the selection of meat and treats they had for sale in their retail store - including things like beautiful venison sausages. Anyway, I walked in, the man working at the counter very happily greeted me, had the invoice ready, and then charged me a price about 25% what I was expecting. I drove to the back, he (can't remember his name) loaded my car in a single reinforced box with handles on each side, had a friendly exchange and I drove away. Its so refreshing when the initial conversation was so simple, the packaging was stellar, the shop was clean, and the people so efficient and friendly. Can't wait to go back and shop. read more

Willowside Meats is by far the best wild game processor I ever used. My wife and I hunt all over the western states. About 95%+ of the meat we eat, is game we harvest. Chicken is the only meat we buy. I go so far as anything we harvest, I'll ice down my quarters and remaining meat, and store it all in 165 quart ice chests in the truck and bring everything back so Willowside can process it. That includes Axis deer out of Texas, during our May hunts in the Hill Country. They've done Axis deer, Elk, Mule deer and Wild hogs for me. They offer a wide selection of custom sausages which is a great way to go with your ground wild meats. The way they've handled and packaged my game meats is incredible. They have a quick turnaround time as well. A friend of mine lost his wild game processor in the Central Valley, and he asked if I'd get his Mule deer along with mine to Willowside. They called Mike and went over his order with suggestions for processing, and he was blown away with the quality of the venison when he got it back. Quality local shop. For the very first time I purchased a 1/2 hog and went in and they walked me thru the process. To be honest I was a little confused on how it all worked but I am thrilled with the end results. I ordered the Canadian bacon and I though they were only going to do the tenderloin and they did the whole Loin. I am ecstatic because the Canadian Bacon is amazing.
