I had a deeply disappointing experience at Willow Creek Dentistry on Esplanade in Chico. Background: I was scheduled to receive two dental crowns following an accident last April. The necessity of these crowns had been thoroughly assessed by four different dental professionals: my dentist, my orthodontist, an endodontist/oral surgeon, and another dentist for a second opinion. Each of these professionals consistently noted that my lower right tooth had zero enamel remaining from the accident, with a crown being the only viable option short of an implant. The top right tooth also required a crown, albeit with a less urgent need as per the specialists' varying recommendations. Despite multiple x-rays and an MRI over the past six months, the level of coordination and preparedness on the day of my appointment was severely lacking. I had taken time off work and rearranged my schedule, anticipating a smooth and efficient process given the severity and urgency of my dental situation. Upon arrival, I was dismayed to discover that only a filling on my left side and a future plan for a crown on the top right were scheduled, with no immediate plan to address the unequivocally more pressing issue of my lower right tooth. When I questioned this change in the treatment plan, I was informed that my insurance was maxed out after the filling. This unilateral decision to alter the treatment plan without consulting me, and ignoring the most critical medical need, is unacceptable. Moreover, it was already explicitly indicated, as well as through provider history, that financial resources were not an issue in this or any plan; but surely, any communication on their part would have ameliorated any concern. All four dental professionals had agreed on the necessity of the crown for the lower right tooth and had been waiting for this procedure to be scheduled so that their subsequent treatment plans could be addressed. Instead, I am now back to square one and am seriously considering seeking treatment outside of the area. I have the best medical and dental insurance available in Butte County, including all possible FLEX spending options, a third-party mandated to pay the balances, and the cash to cover any delays in insurance payments. Given these resources, I expected a higher level of care and coordination from Willow Creek Dentistry. My family and I will be terminating our relationship with Willow Creek Dentistry, and I strongly recommend that others avoid this facility. This incident might have been an oversight, but when I challenged the appointment and referred to the agreed treatment plan, Dr. Michael Muff handed me a mirror and asked me to point out where the procedures should be addressed. I had to respond, "Look, I'm not looking for work to do here. We had a treatment plan, and that's what we were supposed to be doing today." Although Dr. Michael Muff offered to retool and get the procedures done that day, I felt uncomfortable proceeding under these circumstances. The process has already taken seven months, and I expected better coordination and respect for my healthcare plan. Overall, this experience was deeply unsatisfactory and has led me to seek dental care elsewhere. read more

I am in awe over this dentist office. From past experience I started to have a high anxiety in going to offices so I haven't gone to a dentist in years. But when reading over their website and seeing their paper work on how they handle patients with anxiety, I decided to give it a try. The staff is very kind, organized, and with COVID they take all the precautions from fever check at the door, mask on when not on the chair, sanitized everything. They work with your anxiety, actually listen and explain what they are doing. Its comforting. They also help with payments and offer care credit. I can't say enough good things about Willow Creek Dentistry! I broke a filling on Sunday and was able to get an appointment to have it repaired within 2 days! I used to require sedation for even the most minor dental procedure but today, while laying comfortably in the chair, I realized that my dental anxieties have completely disappeared! I never thought I'd look at a trip to the dentist as "no big deal" but I guess I just had to find the right dentist! It's so nice to be relaxed and able to smile and interact with your dentist instead of laying there with your toes curled, fingernails digging into your palm while you sweat bullets, waiting for the next bolt of pain to shoot through your spine! Dr. Muff and his wonderful staff go out of their way to make sure that I am comfortable and well-informed about everything that's happening in my mouth. He is gentle and patient and doesn't rush through the procedure before the anesthetic has had time to have an affect. He did a fantastic job on my tooth and other than some lingering numbness, you can't even see where the tooth stops and the filling begins! The price was more than reasonable (under $300) and they even give discounts if you pay right away. Willow Creek also donated a tremendous amount of dental hygiene supplies to help the displaced victims of the recent Valley fire in Lake County. With nearly 1,300 homes destroyed and thousands of people evacuated, things like toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss become that much more appreciated. The generosity of Drs. Muff and staff helped ensure that people could continue with at least part of their daily routine - like brushing their teeth! I'm very happy that Dr. Muff is my dentist and would wholeheartedly recommend his services to anyone who needs quality dental care at a reasonable price! Beware of Dr. Muff! I've been with Willow Creek for years, until Dr. Muff moved into the business. Upon my first visit with Dr. Muff he told me I had 5 cavities. 4 months earlier at my last cleaning I had none. I asked him about invisalign, and he said he would refer me to someone, but only after I had all the cavities filled. It's been 2 years since that discussion. I've moved on to another dentist who didn't find any cavities, or anything that even looked like it could resemble a cavity. I've been to numerous offices in Chico and Jim Muff is the nicest dentist by far. He's also fair...I was first told I would need a filling and then at the next visit, he said I didn't need one after all. It was refreshing to know it was more about the service and less about money. I am a recent transplant to Chico, and finally got around to finding a new dentist here. I haven't been to the dentist in years due to bad experiences of previous dental offices but when walking out of Willow Creek I was surprisingly relieved.. The front desk was very welcoming, every staff member there has a smile on their face and when pulled into the back Dr Muff took the time to go over every X-ray to where I completely understood why I needed the treatment he recommended. Last Sunday, I broke off a chunk of my front tooth while being manly and lifting heavy things in our cellar. I called Willow Creek Dentistry, who was closed for the weekend, but was directed to Dr. Jim Muff's on-call number. I doubt anyone enjoys fielding an emergency phone call on a Sunday afternoon, but Dr. Muff was kind and accommodating. He was at home with his 3 small kids while his wife was running errands, but immediately loaded his kids into the car and met me at the clinic within 30 minutes. I was expecting the worst-case scenario of a root canal or extraction, but he was able to salvage my tooth by adhering the broken piece back to its original place. The process was quick and painless, I enjoyed a riveting conversation about unicorns with his adorable 4-yr old daughter, and my tooth is good as new. They always make sure you are comfortable and they numb your mouth for everything not like some of the other dentists I have been to in the past. I've been going to Dr. James Muff for over three years now and continue to have him handle my dental needs despite living in Sacramento, finding a good dentist is worth the drive! Unfortunately, I don't floss as diligently as I should and have developed a few cavities over the years; Dr. Muff takes the time to show me on the x-rays where the cavities are and always explains his treatment plan to me before proceeding, this to me is very comforting. Before seeing Dr. Muff my wife complained about tooth pain for several months and saw two other dentists regarding this issue, it was not until we saw Dr. Muff for the first time that he realized the crown was not placed on correctly from the previous dentist, once he made the adjustment the pain subsided.
