BAM = Beer, Art & Music, a perfect combination on a sunny afternoon. 18th Street was closed off to provide parking for food trucks & bicycles. I saw The Green Truck there, as well as Border Grille. 20 breweries donated beer from booths set up in a private courtyard flanked by galleries, where 4 bands provided live music. I only had time to stay for an hour, so I missed all the bands except Speedway (alone worth the trip from Redondo!). The event was packed but very well-organized. A bike valet was looking out for the crapload of parked bicycles. Maybe the reason I had no problem finding a spot for my car was because so many people rode their bikes. Beer and music were included in the price of admission ($35 advance, $40 at the door). All proceeds went toward funding spaces for artists to work & show their work.....a very good cause. The arts need support, especially in rough economic times. The festival attracted a great crowd. Despite all the free-flowing beer, people were upbeat without a hint of rowdiness. I love a good party on a Sunday afternoon and I'm guessing I'll be back next year when I will try to allow more time to hang out and enjoy the day.

Roberts Projects represents the height of the LA gallery world. Exciting new work by world class…read moreartists is presented in a gorgeously converted warehouse space divided into a large spacious main gallery and a smaller side gallery that was divided into two spaces for the Kehinde Wiley exhibition, Colorful Realm. This is the inaugural show at the gallery's new Mid-Wilshire location. If you're reading this prior to April 8, 2023, you should get out to see it! One of LA's most celebrated contemporary artists, Kehinde Wiley's series draws inspiration from the Edo period's Japanese nature paintings. Nine monumental paintings represent stellar examples of Wiley's work. The detail and brushwork make it apparent that these pieces aren't primarily crafted by the hands of his studio assistants. With a price tag of $750K each, I would hope he painted every stroke! Plus, raw linen comprises the monochromatic backgrounds that offer a precious lack of dimensionality, so no assistants required to prep that. It's his sixth solo exhibition with Roberts Projects. They're creating a catalogue that I hope to buy. Discovering Betye Saar's newly created assemblage by the water fountain was a treat. I drew great inspiration from her in the 80's when I was a working sculptor. At age 97, she's still making great work. Oasis, a re-creation one of her 80s neons also adds a nice touch. Roberts also represents artist/skateboarder Ed Templeton and an array of LA's finest talents. A library wall of gallery copies of catalogues and books about the artists are free to browse. Some are rare, out of print works by foreign presses. All that and friendly gallery assistants too. What more can you ask for? Well, LA, they even have a free parking lot! 5 stars.

Once you buzz into the entrance you are greeted by a wall of art books available for perusing / purchase & a friendly front staff to explain more about the current exhibition. This was my first time at the Roberts Projects and I visited specifically for the Kehinde Wiley exhibition- available for viewing until April 8, 2023. One large gallery space followed by an adjacent space of other Wiley art, his art is very distinctive & breathtaking. Entry is complimentary, they have clean restrooms and you can take your time as you explore the space. There is a beautiful Bettye Saar piece as you approach the restrooms. I posted on social media about my fun visit to Roberts Projects and three friends ended up visiting the same day! As an art lover I am glad I got the chance to visit & looking forward to future exhibits.

I also loved that there are a few dining options inside, making it easy to spend a couple of hours exploring without feeling rushed. One of the best things about the Hammer Museum is that admission is free, and they offer generous hours, which makes it a great activity whether you're a local or just visiting Los Angeles. The exhibitions were stunning. I loved the mix of contemporary and modern art, along with works from iconic artists such as Van Gogh and Monet. Every gallery felt thoughtfully curated, and there was always something interesting to discover around the next corner. And the museum store? Absolutely beautiful. I honestly wanted to buy everything. From art books to unique gifts and home items, it's worth visiting on its own. If you're in Los Angeles and looking for a relaxing and inspiring way to spend an afternoon, I highly recommend the Hammer Museum. I'll definitely be back! Note: While the museum has featured works by artists such as Van Gogh and Monet in certain exhibitions or collections, the exhibits rotate, so what's on display may vary during your visit.

And it's a combination of art gallery and antiques themed towards art nouveau. Inside hangs lithographs that are over 70 years old, some pencil art work of Gustav Klimt, dark yet beautifully styled furniture, as well as a functioning phonograph. It's beautiful inside, dark, and yet the one person I talked to who was working the store/gallery was really friendly. Currently on display, is art by GAIL POTOCKI's Fragmented Alice, a modern take on "Alice in Wonderland". The exhibit runs from August 17, 2013 - September 21, 2013. I think I saw some Dave McKean artwork themed off of Alice in Wonderland as well. I'd like to come back here again knowing what's inside. Too bad I couldn't take any pictures inside. There was a work of art that I had my eye on for the past few years. I didn't see it displayed, so I asked the person managing the front desk if it was still available. Fortunately, it was. He allowed me to speak to the owner over the phone regarding the price. The owner, Erica, was very pleasant and patient, and answered all my questions. She also gave me a discount off the work. Because there was LA county tax which had to be added, she gave me a better discount than the one she originally quoted to the front desk employee. It was especially generous of her, since I was a first time buyer and not a repeat customer. They don't bother you or hover over you at the Copro Gallery; you're free to take your time and browse.
