William Poll is new to me. It's another historic company that I've passed in my walks over and over. Recently something in the window caught my eye so I checked out the reviews. I definitely decided I needed to return for a sandwich. Today I decided to walk down to this high end deli at 75th and Lexington. After walking around Central Park with Yelp Friends Robert C. and Janeen I was racking up walking miles and was really hungry. When I arrived the employees at William Poll weren't busy and a nice employee greeted me at the door. I took a lot of photos and told him I had never been here before so I need to know the drill. He pointed out the menu because I said I wanted a sandwich. I was thrilled to see Pumpernickel Bread as a choice. I decided on the Ham and Swiss Cheese and asked for Mayo. The same employee said he would make the sandwich and would I also like mustard. When I asked what kind he said Dijon, I decided it sounded delicious. And it sure was! My only problem is finding a place to eat. I decided to walk back to Fifth Avenue near the park and sit on a bench. The sandwich bread was so fresh and either I was hungry or it's a delicious sandwich. Both probably. It's $10.88 with tax. They take cash or credit cards. There's lots of great food items you can purchase for yourself or as gifts. It's a beautiful place. The chandelier is a striking centerpiece as you enter and leave. To sum it up, the employees are friendly and efficient. The food is fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is fancy and clean. I hate to, but I have to deduct a star for no seating. I won't walk over a mile from my apartment this winter to get a sandwich and sit outside in the cold to eat. I'm recommending you eat here or shop the other specialty food items they carry. William Poll is one of those unique places you only find in NYC. It is a fancy sandwich shop that has been here a while and does things right. I didn't know what to expect here but after reading the reviews I had to see the hype. I went with the poll special which is a couple different meats with cole slaw and russian dressing. The attention to detail when making the sandwich is refreshing to see. I also tried the famous chicken salad with bacon which was amazing. The contrast between the creaminess of the chicken salad and fattiness of the bacon was perfect. Now I get the complaints about the small sandwiches but they put them together perfectly. The ingredients are fresh. Its like the upscale fancy version of the sandwich I used to bring to school as a kid. They sell other stuff in here too like soup and some brownies. My absolute favorite place to go for comfort food all year round. Delicious sandwiches on the thinnest sliced bread. Poll special & chicken salad bacon being my personal favorites. Watercress, bacon horseradish & curry among my top choices for dips. Never forget the divine homemade chips. Lasagna, canapés & pot pies are always great to have in your freezer for a meal in a pinch. There is no other place I can think of other than Butterfield's that has such a wonderful array of soups. I would probably give more like 3.5 stars but rounded up to 4 because it's a quality establishment that's been around for years. Aw....I could cry. This wonderful little gourmet food shop is listed only as a sandwich shop. Before New York City became unaffordable, this was one of many places that offered delicious options for a party or even a quick dinner at home. William Poll has been a staple of the neighborhood for so long. It was from an era in which one stopped off and picked up delectables. So I doubt it ever entered their minds that someday there would be people who would want to eat in, so to speak. Many food shops were just that, you wouldn't even think of eating in the corner cheese store! You could smell it blocks away! I don't think they even sold any cheese sandwiches, only slabs, wheels and slices. That is the New York I remember, bringing home the treats from various stops. William Poll had the most scrumptious salads. Quality. They have that extra star in my memory for being the best, like William Greenberg was for cakes. Packages of delicious salads from William Poll, along with William Greenberg for dessert, assured a tasty treat for the night's repast. There were other shops where one could pick up delicious specialties. One could always rely on luscious quality goods without outrageous prices. People could have a quick lunch at the soigné little luncheonettes more midtown where the turkey sandwiches were made from turkey roasted on the premises. I'm surprised that William Poll has outlasted the New York that was, to exist in the New York that is. Even in the Westchester town I'm familiar with, food shops were like little gourmet grocery stores. Pasta shops, bakeries dedicated to a cupcake etc. Who'd expect to eat in them! Tasty sandwich from a place I had never heard of. Stopped in and got the William polls special sandwich from meal pal. it came with ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian dressing. It was a rather nice sandwich for mealpal, size wise and tasted very good. I noticed they sold a lot of other snacks and such, but didn't get a chance to really get anything else. read more

This place is so great, I find myself thinking of it every time the chill of winter flirts with the hopeful rays of spring, when I want to take a delightful tea sandwich to sit on a Central Park bench and savor every bite of a specialty treat that is the opposite of the mores of society today. Instead of high quantity/low quality, it is high quality in a thin, delicious tea sandwich, where every bite is a joyful yummy treat. Almost in direct response to the expectations of a consumer of the giant proportions of today, they tell me before they make my sandwich that it is a thin sandwich, with thin slices of bread, and is that ok with me? but those thin slices of rye are so fine and so wonderful, and they make the turkey, brie and spicy watercress between them so proportionately perfect. There is no other place serving sandwiches that are such a delicate, desirable antithesis to the more is more philosophy in today's world. And because I ate so slowly while I savored every bite, I was actually full before I even finished that thin sandwich, and so I saved some for a happy future time. This place is exactly what you imagine when you think classic, old-school NY deli. Bunch of old guys who look like they've been around the block as long as the place has. I must have been REALLY hungry or this was the best egg salad sandwich i have ever had. The portions were tiny so i am glad i got to try this place out through mealpal because i don't know if $10 is worth it for tiny egg salad sandwich or if i would ever pay $10 for a egg salad sandwich. After having a a beer(or 4) we ran across this little shop. They sold cookies, soup, popcorn...all the little items you think you NEED when your tipsy walking through New York! The staff was So nice, he asked what everyones name was and even came around the counter and hugged us...AWWW sweet. As I was walking up and down the aisle trying to figure out a snack for the subway trip back to our hotel the owner was giving me samples of all different tips of cookies and dips. THANKS! In it was probably 1979, my mom's best friend brought a whiff of Glamorous New York to her modest at-home wedding reception with catering by William Poll. There was something about knowing that we were eating the same delicious hors d'oeuvres that might sustain a party attended by Liza Minelli or Andy Warhol that elevated what would have otherwise been a rather modest affair into something exclusive and exciting. The $50 I spent on two boxes of frozen delicacies this New Year's Eve did the same for our private Champagne-and-nosh before walking down to the Brooklyn fireworks. Well, I can't say enough good things about this place. Wow, it is a NY deli run by the friendliest Greek family, so very nice. They have incredible gourmet food and catering menus, to include a gourmet version of pigs in a blanket. Who doesn't like pigs in a blanket? No one, that's who. Well, maybe vegetarians. I read about William Poll on the Kate Spade blog and stopped in while I was in the neighborhood and was immediately greeted by James as I walked in the door. He showed me around, made sure I tasted some of the incredible dips and baked potato thins (his mother, Christine's, recipe). I got to see the kitchen and meet the super friendly staff and got to talking to James and found out that we used to live a few streets down from each other in upstate NY. I ordered a watercress, Brie and turkey sandwich on rye, and James threw in some delicious lemon meringues too :) Great store, I will come back any time I need a snack and I'm in the UES! This tiny store houses some delicious food! If you're not sure what to get, ask James or Stanley Poll, the brothers who run this family-owned business- they're generous with advice and samples. I'm a fan of their sandwiches, especially the Chicken Salad sandwich and their fresh Guacamole. I also love their Peanut Butter & jelly sandwich, which has just the right amount of smoosh - you know what I mean, don't you? If you time your visit just right, you can get your hands on a fresh baked scone available after 10:00 in the morning (these are well worth the wait, believe me). I tried the Coq au Vin and it was heavenly, perfect for dinner. They offer so much more and I'm slowly working through all the delicious fare. I realized my expectation was idealized from movies, but this certainly made my imaginations a reality. My wife and I ordered sandwiches and while we waited, James Poll warmly entreated us to try his home made potato thins. From there, we discussed that we were visiting from Florida and swapped some stories. While we were paying, he continued to chat with us and make sure we had anything we wanted. He called us back as we were leaving and gave us four meringue treats to enjoy as a topping to our lunch. While walking by after a visit to the Met, I recognized the name, William Poll, from an article I read in Town & Country magazine awhile ago. I was immediately greeted by (I think he said James). He was so nice and offered me samples of different products they sell. I let him know I was thirsty and wanted to buy a drink. He directed me to the area where the beverages were and he informed me they have a housemate lemonade. It peaked my curiosity because I love a good lemonade!
