They began in 1957 in Corvallis, Oregon and unlike many other banks which began in this fine state, they stuck around and are STILL headquartered here in (Corvallis) Oregon!! What earns this five-star review is their unparalleled level of customer service; never any lines because every employee is always willing to help a customer, always a real person answering the phone when I call, got to know me by name from the day I opened my account, immediately takes care of any issue I have and even checks in with me to see if they can improve their customer service! It's an old-fashioned handshake-kind-of-feel with a modern twist. The Salem branch in particular is a great one because it's of that newer micro-branch kind of design. A small downtown footprint however, big enough to send an employee out to my business whenever I need help with remote deposit capture or the need for a notary when in a pinch. When staff respond with a blank stare, then telling the customer, "I'm sorry, I don't understand", then telling the customer, "I'm confused", after practically having to draw a picture for the staff, that's a clear indication that staff needs more training or should look for a job elsewhere. She really didn't know what to do. I asked her if she could duplicate the same number on the one that I lost and she was bewildered. She made me a card but it had a different number. When I went to use the card to pay for an item, it didn't work because she didn't activate it. I went in again to get another card and the same employee made a new card and activated it but told me that I could not use it for more than 7 days. As a result, I can't use a debit card for a minimum of of a week and possibly 11 days.

I've had Chase, BOFA, KeyBank, ALL of them work like this. Just because you're disgruntled because you can't reach a body fast enough by phone does not warrant a 1 star review. Let me tell you about my experience(s) there thus far. I've had them for about a year. My credit card was hacked once [online purchase] and they caught it immediately. Every single time I go in there I am greeted immediately. Every service I've ever needed was taken care of promptly, from new cards, to coin counting, to ordering checks. I have the mobile app which I pay bills from, there is NEVER an issue they don't handle immediately. And let me tell you what happened just this morning. Thank you LISA FROM THE WIRE TRANSFER DEPARTMENT. I completed the wire for something that should have been paid for YESTERDAY. And while the payment was not late, it was a matter of confirming with my seller that the payment was made for shipping purposes. So I called the 800 customer service number, I hit 4..then I hit 3. And I was connected immediately. I didn't have to wait, I wasn't 10th in line, and it's already 9:40am on a Tuesday..if that tells you anything. So I explained to the young man what it was I did, and how I did it. He confirmed the payment would not go out until TOMORROW. *ALL* financial institutions work their wire departments differently. OCCU likes to LOOK at each one they just don't send them out [thank you fraud department measures!] but when I explained why and what it was, he asked if he could put me on hold. When he came back he said LISA in the wire department would pull mine and process it AND send me an email today of when it was completed. IF THAT ISN'T SERVICE AND KINDNESS I DONT KNOW WHAT IS. I asked if I could send them cookies or pizza as a thank you and he said "just pay it forward and make someone else smile we're glad we could assist you with your transaction that's why we are here". WHEN do you ever hear something like that from a customer service representative any more? KUDOS to them. Post pandemic people have no patience any more. BUT remember please-the reason you USE THEM is because they provide the human touch service large banks do not. WELL DONE OCCU! and many thanks.

Somehow they were able to be disingenuous in the construct of the fine print during the process.... ultimately it is our fault for lack of understanding, but shame on them on the original sale....they win some extra $$ but lose a client.
