I seldom go to the trouble of writing a critical review, but I have pondered it extensively, and I think others should be warned about this particular Chase branch. I would strongly dissuade you from opening an account at this location. The man named Shane was very aggressive, and not in a good way. First, he insisted that he needed to ding my credit report with an inquiry, despite that he already knew I was only there to deposit $2000 into a new checking account. As you know, credit inquiries like the one Shane inflicted on my credit score are harmful to your credit rating. They should not be necessary in order to make a deposit. Then, Shane proceeded to ask me a long series of very personal questions, most of which had nothing to do with opening a new checking account. One of his questions pertained to my interests and hobbies. When I told him I liked flying, and had part ownership in an airplane, he stepped away into a different office for a few minutes. When he returned, he told me he had Googled some of the information I shared with him, checking to see if I was telling the truth. Then I objected to his abrasive, insulting technique for opening a checking account, and told him I wished to speak with the branch manager (an affable man whom I had met earlier in the day, when he asked me to return in an hour if I wanted to be helped that day). The branch manager came into Shane's office and told me I could either cooperate with Shane, or not open the account. I asked him to tell Shane I was ready to try again to get the account opened, but I did not want to spend another hour there. When summoned back to his office by the manager, Shane seemed a changed man. He opened the account quickly (with the assistance of the branch manager who watched over his shoulder and assisted with some of the computer prompts), and I left. Unfortunately, I did not realize until I got home, and until after I had already redirected my direct deposits into the new checking account, that Shane had neglected to give me the debit card I had requested for the new checking account. For obvious reasons, I do not wish to endure another encounter there, so I am thinking about switching my direct deposits back to U.S. Bank and closing the new Chase account. If I were you, or I had it to do over again, I would avoid the Chase branch on Hawthorne in Salem, Oregon. For me, it was a very unpleasant experience, and one I will not soon forget. read more
