Newly refurbished in 2004, it now holds the same butchers, no Somerfield and...well, not much else. There is a nice new shiny floor and automatic doors though, and a sit in Greggs the Bakers. That's about the highest accolade i can give the place. I still tend to walk through here though, and i have no idea why. Perhaps to see if it has magically turned into somewhere with good shops overnight, or maybe just to remind myself what a pointless place it is. Every single tome i have been, it's literally like a ghost town, with the majority of people here being employees. They did try to make the upstairs section into a market once, but that quickly petered out, and so the cycle of shops opening and swiftly closing three weeks later began, and hasn't stopped since. There is a big Savers in here which is good for toiletries, and an Argos, a Peacocks and Bon Marche, but other than that...it's empty. Give this one a miss...although if it's raining it gives a good bit of shelter between the bus station and the Regent Centre...that's it's only saving grace!

In the last 12 years the store has been extended 3 times and even more recently has been re-furbished which means that although it's exterior looks like something from the 70's, the interior is modern, fresh and airy, just like every other modern M&S. I might be slightly biased as I worked in the store for 7 years, albeit several years ago, but I reckon the staff in the Hamilton store are among the most helpful and friendly staff employed by M&S and this is reflected in the neat and tidy, well stocked shelves/racks in the store. One of the best additions to the store in the last few years is the coffee shop - it's well worth a visit!

And then like a shimmering white eruption of sophistication at the end of the world trusty M&S looms into view. The branch of Marks and Spencer itself is probably what you would expect in a small town, recently modernised to the new M&S decor and display styles they squeeze quite a lot in, although don't expect the same range as you would find in a city centre or out-of-town style branch. They have smaller ranges of the usual clothing departments, a home accessories section and a cafe. The food-hall is good for this size of store; at the end of the day, post-work, the shelves are generally well stacked as the staff are busy beavering away to replenish the stock. This is the part of the shop that I visit most and do find it to be the busiest, at least in the evening when I think most of the customers are popping-in on their way home.

As Focus was huge I was expecting good things from B&M and I was not disappointed. There is plenty of groceries, beauty and cosmetics, baby stuff, toys, home furnishings, DIY and an outside section for garden products, which they've kept from Focus. The prices are mighty good and I thought that this year I would do a little bit of Christmas shopping here for a change. I noticed while I was in Asda that they sold some of the same products but B&M was much much cheaper. They have a good selection but I have to admit I did struggle for the men in my family, all the ladies and babies are sorted but I'll need to go elsewhere to sort out the menfolk presents. I've been popping in over the few months it's been open and I've always managed to get the bits and bobs I've needed. It's very handed as it's only minutes drive down the road from me. More and more of these B&M stores are popping up and I have to say they are rather good.

There are only half a dozen shops or thereabouts. Inside though, it's clean, tidy and well lit. There are some cracking shops inside including a great WH Smith, Marks and Spencers, Early Learning Centre, Millets, Thortons and The Body Shop. There are also a few phone shops and game shops. There is also a really good wee cafe in here, The Capocci Man. Spent alot of time in here recently, having travelled over to Hamilton alot to visit the excellent sports complex.

Clothes shops, cafes, game stores and even a massive Woolworths, but most of that has gone now, leaving Hamilton shoppers with a costa, a few pound shops, a Wilkinsons, and a New Look. The only good thing going for this place is Marks and Spencer's. The only reason I'm giving this place a 3 star review despite it sounding like it deserves 1 is because I still love the place. This used to be a pound shop and has recently changed management and name to 'Gift Land', the place where you are probably least likely to buy someone a gift from if you have the choice. Like I said, it just sells stuff, ranging from cards and gift bags to actual furniture and decorative framed pictures of Tu-Pac and Elvis. They have an OK cat and dog section where you will find weird stuff like pop up kennels and day-glo jackets for your pooch. They have a huge hen night section as well, with flashing badges and L Plates aplenty. A lot of the stuff is tacky and plastic and shoddily made too. Everything costs about a pound, and not too much more unless you buy the bigger items. Somewhere you kind of find yourself wandering into and leave with nothing except a sense of bewilderment.

The thing I never really understand about Matalan is the need for cards. Why do they have them? It used to be that you had to have a card to buy anything, but on my more recent visit, I noticed they had slackened up on that, and it's now used for more of a rewards card than store ID. This store has everything; kids, women's and men's clothes, shoes and home ware. They have a brilliant underwear section and sell branded bras at less than half price. They even have Calvin Klein boxers at £9 a pack, which is less than half price, ideal for Xmas or Birthday pressies! I used the services that M Party provides for my 21st birthday party, and had cream and pink balloons with lovely little shimmery weights and bits and bobs for decorating the hall, all for under £100, which was amazing value! You have to collect the balloons yourself but that wasn't a problem. They have table decorations, age specific decorations and buffet ware, which is all fairly priced and available in every colour imaginable! They also make up banners if you want them, although I felt they were a bit pricey. Huge store with loads of bargains! The store is welcoming and easy to access so ideal for wheelchairs and prams. They stock the usual items of clothing for the whole family although it is not the biggest store it does have trousers, jeans, tops etc for both women and men and a nice small children's section. I needed a pair of wellies but the child's feet were so small but i found a pair here and the person was delighted. The cost was not too expensive compared to other shops. The store is well lit and the stock is displayed so you can located what your looking for easily. The staff are friendly and helpful.
