It was known as intu Eldon Square between 2013 and 2020 but following the collapse of intu, it has returned to its original name of Eldon Square. At the time of writing, Eldon Square is the 15th largest shopping centre in the country in terms of retail size, there is a much larger shopping centre, Metrocentre around a 10-15 minute drive away, but despite being smaller, I prefer Eldon Square, I still think the mall is a good size and it just seemed to have a better atmosphere, being in the city centre too rather than a soulless out of town mall. The mall has a great number of stores and brands including anchor retailers Fenwick, John Lewis and Marks and Spencer. Other brands located here include Apple, Boots, H&M, Next, Rituals and the major mobile phone/telecommunications networks. For food and drink, you have the likes of Starbucks, Nando's, Pizza Express, Ask Italian, Wagamama and TGI Fridays. The mall staff were friendly, and while there wasn't really anyone dotted around the mall, the help desk was easily to find so I could seek assistance finding a store. The layout of the mall is a little confusing and I think makes it seem bigger than it actually is - it can be quite a trek from the Bus Station to the Apple end of the mall. I do think the stores do shut a little early for the centre of a big city, between Monday and Saturday, the mall shuts at 7 pm, with some stores shutting as early as 6 pm including John Lewis. Thursday is an exception, where all stores tend to remain open until 8 pm, and Sunday is bound by Sunday trading laws so there's not much they can do there. 4* -

Accommodation is in a modern, self contained two storey block with ample parking. Our room was…read morereasonably spaceous, well equiped, and had a good en-suite. Decoration and cleanliness were more than acceptable. Despite our close proximity to a busy road, sound-proofing was very good and we were not disturbed by traffic noise. The main reception is in the inn and access to the accomodation block required the use of your room key-card on the front door. Breakfast is self service in the inn and and although it is described as continental, it includes fresh fruit yoghurt and cereals in addition to the continental norm of fruit juice, tea/coffee and croissants etc. The Innkeepers Lodge website offers standard room pricing which is competitive and includes a continental breakfast .it also offers three nights for the price of two at weekends which makes them a bit of a bargain compaired to similar travel Inn/lodge establishments. This is the first Innkeeper Lodge I have used so I cannot comment on them generally but if they all approach the standard of the Falcon's Nest I would gladly give an overall recommendation. As it is I can only speak for this establishment which I highly recommend.

Dotty P's is one of my favourite stores to shop in for a few reasons: they always seem to have a…read moresale on; even when they don't have a sale on you can get a great fitting t-shirt for about £4; they support the Woodland Trust by having a range of clothing and accessories available to buy; they have the fabulous Gok Wan on board to shout hello Gorgeous girls! over the loud speaker as you are shopping, just to make you feel better about yourself! This store is just inside of the Northumberland Street entrance of Eldon Sqaure shopping centre and so is easy to get to and practically always the first clothing store I head to when I come to toon to shop! This place has two floors with a bit of a steep staircase but most of the good stuff is downstairs anyway. The staff are really good here too, and recently went out of their way to help me order stuff in and use a gift voucher card I had. This is a good place to come to early in the day as it can get very busy later on.

There are changing rooms, although these are small in number and hidden at the back of the store. The staff are quite polite and all wear the chain's clothing range. The type of clothing featured in the shop is predominantly smart to evening wear. Ideal outfits for a special occasion or a wedding, they sell a beautiful range of quality dresses and skirt/top combos. They have a particularly good range of corset type tops and prom style dresses. They have a smaller range of smart casual clothing, tailored trousers and skirts and smart tops and shirts. Definitely not something for everyday wear, as the prices are quite high for a high street chain, but for the quality of the items, for a special occasion, or if you have the money to spare, they are well worth it.

Numerous award winning butchers that offer prime cuts of meat, fantastic mince and healthy plump chickens and eggs! Wonderful bakery that makes the best breads and pastry I have tried. Wonderful vegetables and fruit stands where you get can a serious deal on great vegetables. Cheapest and most authentic pick and mix selection I have ever seen Fish monger, show repair, tea shop, cafes, clothing and boot sale, cd shops, home repair, clothing alterations ... Even a room with a scale in it! Grainger Market is magical. A must see, I consider the market a tourist attraction because of how traditional it is. The people in the booths all seem very authentic and very helpful.
