Clarke Brothers isn't really an Auto Factors, they're actually a Clutch Specialist, so when my…read moreSWMBO burnt out the clutch on her ancient jalopy, I was sent to Clarkes as they were they only place who didn't answer her enquiry with "A what?" They are basically a two man operation, there's Gerry, who is a walking encyclopedia of all things clutch related, and Paul, who looks like he should be ripping the guts out of a Harley in LA somewhere instead of working in a clutch shop in Belfast. In any case they were able to supply a clutch to fit and were very reasonable about it. My second visit was an emergency when my father left his car into his local mechanic and the clutch supplied by the mechanic was wrong, just what he needed on a Saturday morning, of course the clutch was an oddball item that wasn't in stock, fortunately my hairy namesake took one look at it, told me to "Bugger off for an hour" and when I returned he had refurbished the clutch like new. In short, it's one of those businesses that's a throwback to a previous age, two blokes who know what they are talking about and will take the time for a bit of banter and to make sure you're happy.

Fortunately Clarkes was a pleasure to go to. They provide very competitvely priced clutches and will gladly go the extra mile in order to ensure that you get the parts you need as promptly as possible. There is space to park the car outside, which is very important for somewhere so close to the centre of Belfast. The staff are wonderfully polite and friendly, which in the macho world of car parts and repairs is a real plus! They provide installation and all other relevant advice, and are very helpful!

AVOID would be my review summed up…read more I bought a 4yo Mercedes from the dealership last April and have been plagued with electrical and safety related issues since - the car was first in with them for warning lights within the first week of ownership. After the car had been in with them for numerous reasons by June - including for not starting ('luckily', as I was told, in my driveway) and turning on but refusing to release the handbrake and needing to be recovered - I raised my dissatisfaction and asked to hand it back. I was reassured by the dealership that they could understand my frustration and that they would 'swap me into a like for like asap'. It is now 8-9 months later, I still have the car, have not been offered a single alternative, they never reply to emails and are always 'too busy with a customer' to take a call .. no matter how many times I phone or when. Having complained on countless occasions via email and phone from June - Nov, I raised a formal complaint via email in Nov. Again, no response or action. The odd empty promise of 'looking for something to swap me into'. I have only recently been given a trade in value for my car, as though I were just choosing to change it, which is far below what I paid for it leaving me without the deposit I put into it in the first place, as well as a large cost to change into anything else of a similar spec. I flagged to the Financial Ombudsman that I issued a formal complaint letter in Nov, which the dealership confirmed receiving, and that I have not received a formal response within the legally required 8 week limit and asked them to assist. I have just been advised by the FO today that the dealership has claimed to have no knowledge of a complaint ever being raised. Completely false and infuriating. They have displayed a continuous lack of care and consideration for a customer, doing their best to avoid making contact or replying when they say they will and then making false promises when they do, all while keeping me in a car that has displayed numerous electrical issues, including with the brakes, parking sensors and handbrake. AVOID and go elsewhere!

Revised review…read more Black Golf GTI bought in October 2022 Issues with the clutch stuck/depressed, Issues after about 5 months, less than 3k miles driven (mostly at weekends) EPC light and catastrophic engine failure needing to be recovered at my own cost, car was given back still not fixed as it died again the same night I got it back, they then "fixed it" then 7 weeks after that, same issue again. Tried to hand the car back for a refund and ended up selling it back to them for 10k to get shot of the lemon, where I paid 14.7k for it including a trade in which I got buttons for. Meant to be a dream car and turned into a nightmare. You don't have to look far in the negative reviews to see, almost the exact same issues inexperienced with dealing with a used car from Bells. Pay extra and go somewhere else! AVOID

Everyone knows what Halfords do, they specialise in parts and accessories for all types of vehicles…read moreincluding bikes and trikes. But what I didn't know until recently was they could also fit electronics and fix minor car problems. I bought a new car radio and car garages were quoting me ridiculous prices and time frames to get it fitted - I like singing along with all my cheesy tunes in the car and not having a radio was really starting to impact on the likelihood of me getting spotted by a major record label whilst stopped at traffic lights. So obviously it become top priority to get my new radio fitted. This is where Halfords came in. I popped in to the shop in Bangor and they booked me in for the following day - all this cost was £30, which is an absolute bargain. I returned the next day and within 30 minutes Gareth - the car electrics expert had fitted my new radio and even sat with me until I connected my phone to make sure everything was working to perfection. I cannot find a fault in the service Halfords provided and it's worth noting that they employ experts who know their cars. This branch has a huge shared car park and plenty of space if the guys from Halfords need to pop your bonnet or test out your newly fitted wipers.
