I will always be grateful for them helping us find our new family friend! This shelter really does everything they can for all of their animals to keep them safe and healthy! They are incredibly hard working and committed to their animals in a loving and supportive way; whether it taking them to the vet at any time of the day or night to helping mother dogs birth their puppies, they are right there caring for them every step of the way! They go above and beyond to rescue animals and take in any stray/surrender they can! That's how they found Minnie. They do their best to find their animals homes that will take care of their needs as well as work with the new families in any needs they have. They really know each and every one of the animals they care for by their personality and interests. These staff members have a personal relationship with these animals instead of only knowing them by a number or "name". I honestly am very proud of all their hard work, their abilities to conquer through anything and admire their passionate hearts! 5 stars is not a high enough award that this rescue deserves as they clearly do 10 star and above work! I hope you consider checking them out for a new furry friend and see all of the care they receive here!

I appreciate all the love they show both my pups (one from their rescue, and our older dog from another rescue) when we drop them off. They know their personalities and how to handle each of them. We used to have a family friend watch the dogs at home when we were out of town, so I was a bit nervous the first time we left them, but the staff made sure to let me know we could contact them to check on the dogs any time... and now my dogs are exited to go back and play when we are out of town. Thank you for all your hard work ROAR staff!!!

The Cleveland APL is a great place to adopt a pet (or a few!). Lots of dogs, lots of cats, and…read moresometimes there are gerbils, hamsters, rabbits, etc. I think the best way to adopt a pet here is to become a volunteer, get to know the place and the pets, and adopt when it feels right. If you cannot do this, however, the APL helps potential pet parents by arranging meet and greets, filling you in on a pet's 'person'ality, or by recommending the best pet for you based on what you are looking for. For example, in March, my husband and I wanted to adopt a husky on their website, but since we said we were looking for a fun but calm-ish dog that needed help getting adopted, they were able to point us in the right direction to our wonderful Pitbull-Terrier mix, Remy. We also frequently volunteer here and can verify that it is a great place to be. There are many ways someone can volunteer (ie, cat adoptions, dog walking, dog photography, etc). We volunteer as dog walkers - with this experience, I can say that shelter dogs are usually loving dogs and deserve a second chance. Many people are hesitant to adopt shelter dogs, or avoid Pitbulls (a common shelter dog) or other 'aggressive' dogs. This is merely a stereotype and is inherently wrong. I have walked many well behaved, smart, fun, chill, and safe dogs - the whole spectrum and have never had a problem. If you are worried about a dog, however, be sure to look at the color code: blue basically means stuffed animal - you will never have a problem here. Green is pretty good, and may have minor behavioral 'needs improvement' areas (ie, very excitable, pulls a little). Yellow dogs are good dogs, but may require a lot of energy and positive reinforcement training. Red dogs are 'staff-only' dogs, or are dogs that have not been behaviourally examined yet. Also be sure to always read a pet's information card. The only improvement area I see for the APL involves background and/or home visits for all adopted animals, which is not currently done for most, if not all, cases. It seems possible that animals in poor situations could easily return to a similar or to the same situation. I adopted a cat from the South Euclid Humane Society and they had this policy in place, which I felt was very worthwhile and good for the animals.

There's always a wide array of animals to adopt here. This is one clean and greatly organized…read morerescue. Parking is easy breezy and centrally located in Cleveland.

Secondhand Mutts saves dogs from high-risk situations like kill shelters or at-risk city and county shelters where their time has run out or the shelter is full. The staff and foster parents lovingly give these dogs the resources they need (socialization, medical attention, etc.) to give them the best chance possible at a full life. Earlier this year, I hosted a charity drive for Secondhand Mutts where the Yelp community collected a variety of collars, leashes, toys, treats, office supplies and other items to help Secondhand Mutts save more dogs and sustain office operations. Every person I met from Secondhand Mutts was kind, passionate and extremely hardworking and selfless. Their work is so admirable and when you donate to Secondhand Mutts, you know your donation is going as far as possible. If you're on the hunt for a new family member, visit their website to find our what dogs are adoptable (they don't have a physical shelter to visit, most dogs live in foster homes). I love this nonprofit. Thanks for all you do, Secondhand Mutts!
