Although the selection of restaurants on Beaver Island is small, they don't skimp on quality or flavor. At least that's what I took from my experience at Dalwhinnie, where I had two meals in one day on a recent trip to the island. A mere 1/2 mile from the center of downtown and next to McDonaugh's grocery, Dalwhinnie boasts a large front porch facing Paradise Bay, with lots of tables for outdoor dining. For breakfast, I decided on the Lake Michigan Eggs Benedict. I don't know why I never thought of this one, because it's essentially the love child of two of my favorite brunch dishes -- Eggs Benedict and Lox Bagels. With some fresh arugula to accompany, it was even more delicious than I had hoped for. We got a small coffee at breakfast, which came with free refills -- a nice perk! We returned later the same day after a 20 mile bike ride, ready for something else tasty. I had a hard time deciding, as all of the wraps and sammies had delicious-sounding descriptions. Chicken ranch wrap was the winner, and it didn't disappoint. Chicken, ranch, cheese, spinach, and tomato were tucked into a lightly grilled wrap, with some crunchy pickle slices on the side. I don't remember the last time I went to the same restaurant twice in one day, but I hope that my next trip to Beaver Island has me doing the same again at Dalwhinnie! read more

The food here is excellent, fresh and light. They have some of the best scrambled eggs I've tasted. The scrambled eggs are fluffy and light cooked exactly as requested. The French toast is excellent comes with powdered sugar and syrup. Most of all the service is great and welcoming, makes me want to eat here daily. The lowest rating for this restaurant in 20 years. Eggs over medium resulted in one over too easy and one broken yolk hard as a rock. Toast was untoasted! Basically raw bread. Coffee used to be Starbucks with several options. Now very basic and not very good. My spouse's avocado toast was also on raw bread. Both meals pretty much inedible. read more

This is like Grandma's house on a Sunday morning. Super cute, quaint atmosphere with delicious looking bakery goods filling the display case. The menu is very extensive which was unexpected since it is located on an island with 350 residents. We were just here this past weekend, so it was after the busy summer season and I am not sure how late they stay open during the year but I hope they never close for the locals. I would not mind coming to have breakfast here every day if I was a local on the island. Friendly ladies running the place. The food is delicious with expected portions. The worst thing in the world is expecting more food than you actually get - not the case here. They have bagel sandwiches, breakfast skillets, classic breakfast items and more. I showed up with 25 people and it didn't seem to overwhelm then in the least. The best part is that our food came out still relatively quickly and didn't look like or taste like it was done in two seconds. After Labor Day, on Beaver Island, not much is open, but after hiking was so grateful, that this place was.. It's usually about a 20 min wait for the sandwich. I had the Talk Turkey Sandwich, with apple jam and melted Brie cheese (no onion), and it was worth the wait.. Best Turkey Sandwich! Also their frozen coffee drinks are good, and their one shot of espresso is $1! TIP: Order your sandwich for here or to go, and wander next door to McDonough Market to buy some NEON SPARKLERS! I was on Beaver Island for just a couple of days due to a funeral. I walked to Dalwhinnie's each morning and enjoyed every breakfast. We try to make it to Beaver Island once a year, usually in the fall. We love the place because it is the exact opposite of Mackinaw Island. Dalwhinnie's is our usual breakfast stop and we have never been disappointed. We enjoy the fact that the staff has a kind of " Soup Nazi" mentality. If more small restaurants took a cue from Dalwhinnie's 's instead of trying to please everybody's little quirks they would be better off. Last year we happened to be in town for the annual " Bite of the island". All the island's pubs and restaurants had a booth set up in the community center. Dalwhinnie's offering was by far the best and was all gone early into the program. The owner had won first place in the pie contest ( apple ) and I was the highest bidder for it with the proceeds going to a local charity. Besides bragging rights for the next year the owner was also bestowed a cheap tiara which she was still proudly wearing the next morning at the restaurant. She claimed that she slept with it on!!!!. read more

Good food- but the family that runs the place is out of touch for good service. The girl that took my order said "you better hurry up and make up your mind if you want a salad, we're about out of lettuce." Ok- so they might have been shorted on their truck, but they also own the grocery store next door which had plenty of lettuce. I think this is the best breakfast on the island, but don't try to add or substitute on the menu.....maybe the counter girl just needs more training but she was socially awkward and just had a hard time with customers in general. The girl in front of me in line asked if there were any gluten free options or if any of the sandwiches could be made as a salad instead and the attitude was pretty much "take it or leave it" The same thing happened to someone the day before when a guy asked if the cappuccino could be made with soy milk.
