I was taken to this cake shop by a resident of the Hague who had been patronizing it since the 1960s, when it was a hangout for the Dutch avant-garde arts scene. The place has remained an institution in town for 80 years, and is still owned by the same family that originally founded it as a Viennese-style patisserie.
The glass pastry case in the front of the store gives you a preview of their tasty wares, including things like Sacher torte, apple strudel, and nut rolls. While these treats may look enticing on their own, they are truly more of a vehicle for the homemade whipped cream, which is mounded, in thick wave-style patterns, on top of whatever dish you choose. The cream is truly exceptional, and something about the historical aura of the place makes it seem OK to forget moderation and lick the plate clean.
If you want to experience a slice of local history, try out this place. It is centrally located, not far from the Mauritshuis Museum and the Royal Academy of Art. read more
