I love escape rooms. I chose a really hard one though I was with my husband and 8 year old. So be mindful of the difficulty level.

Went with my boyfriend for a date night. We chose the Escape from the '80s room. Some knowledge of '80s pop culture is helpful, especially movies and music, but not strictly required to escape the room. There are cameras in the room so the game master can view your progress to help, but you have to speak into a walkie-talkie to actually request hints. We didn't need any hints until well into the game, and it's possible we wouldn't have needed any except for issue #2 below. Overall we had a good experience, but I'm taking a star off for the following reasons: 1. We discovered at the beginning of the game that one of the locks had been left unlocked, so we didn't need to solve the accompanying puzzle. This was a minor detail, but in escape rooms minor details are so frequently important that we were a bit surprised this one was missed. 2. The game master who reset our room prior to our game accidentally put a particular lock on the wrong box. This led to the loss of at least five minutes as we tried to figure out why we were unable to unlock the box despite successfully solving the puzzle. Eventually the owner came in and confirmed that the box had the wrong lock and we had the correct solution. He apologized profusely and added five additional minutes to our time to make up for the error, which we appreciated, but it definitely interrupted the game flow. 3. Most of the puzzles ended in unlocking a lock of some kind, whether on a drawer or a box. There were even a couple of superfluous locks that had no bearing on the ultimate goal of finding the time machine and escaping. Even though there were several types of locks, including one type we had never seen before, this eventually became repetitive and a bit monotonous. For example, there were no places where putting a prop in a certain spot triggered another mechanism, such as the opening of a box or a door. 4. This was the first time we tried a room with a theme based on a specific time period rather than a place, and there were limitations we hadn't thought of. For example, some of the locks could have been switched out with a touch-screen code in a different experience, but since those didn't exist in the '80s, such a tool would have been an anachronism in this one. In addition, it didn't really feel like we were actually in the '80s, though the owners tried to make the experience immersive with cheetah and zebra print wallpaper and posters of '80s bands. In contrast, the Trapped in a Jungle rooms at Game On Escapes had such heavily customized sets that it genuinely felt like being in a jungle (and later the cockpit of a plane). Ultimately we still had a good time despite these issues, and I'm especially interested in the books they've published that take you on real-life scavenger hunts in Cary and Apex. Those are local touches I haven't seen elsewhere, and I'm looking forward to going back for those and the other "in-house" rooms. read more

Shout out to this place for being amazing! I brought my 12yr old for the first time to see if we could complete a room I previously hadn't been able to finish in time. One of the clues needed to open the last lock was something that didn't sit right with us as a Christians. I was ok with that, I didn't say anything to them or make a fuss about it, we just decided we'd complete everything except the last clue, and we were ok with that. I guess they overheard us, and offered to accommodate us by giving us an alternative to engaging with something we weren't comfortable with. I wasn't expecting that at all, but I greatly appreciated it, and we were able to officially finish the room! It was so much fun and I look forward to bringing my son back next month for his birthday! read more

We had five people trying to escape from the Mystic Orb room. This was our seventh escape room for four of us, first for one of us. The room was challenging and we did not make it! Womp womp. However, we asked for ZERO hints for the first time ever, they told us this was their second hardest room, and we were just one a-ha moment and mere seconds from completing the very last puzzle, so I was really pleased with our performance. After the timer ended and our game master came in, she gave us a minute to see if we could get it, and we did! I have not experienced that before and I thought that was really nice. Even though we didn't escape, that really helped give closure and made the experience more satisfying than if we'd walked away without finding the orb. This room was almost exclusively based on finding codes for locks, which made it a little "one note" compared to our all-time favorite Total Escape in Winston-Salem. And not all the locks worked easily, which could be frustrating. A few times, we had the right combination but the lock was being persnickity. We'd go back and do the puzzle again, someone else would try the code, and another person after that and it would finally work. This obviously cost precious time. In a timed game like this, I feel like the locks should be in top notch working condition. Finally, the person who greeted us when we arrived appeared to be the owner, and was not the young woman who came in at the end. Since we didn't ask for any hints, we don't know when that transition happened. She was very nice and friendly. However, the older man who got us started was not even the least bit friendly, welcoming, or enthusiastic. It was quite a painful social experience, to be honest. He pointed to some guidelines on the wall and told us to read them. And then when he led us to the room to get us started, he really just seemed like he couldn't be bothered. He mumbled the back story and might as well have rolled his eyes at the end, if that gives you any indication of his level of enthusiasm. It definitely contributed to a sour start, and surely contributed to our decision not to ask for any hints. Perhaps the young lady was late for work and he was annoyed he had to do it, but we paid $150 to be there and so maybe don't act like you're too cool to talk to us, my dude. But the silver lining of that was we pushed through the temptation to ask for hints, as well as giving me new appreciation for other game masters we've had else where who've really contributed to our experience and enhanced the geeky good time. We have been to many escape rooms at different places and this one was the best by far. We did the Escape The Supervillan's Lair room and it was challenging and fun. Many cool puzzles and some fun riddles. One made us jump a bit. Super family friendly and fun. We are very exited to do the Bustin' Out Of The Eighties room here as well. The people here are very nice, friendly, and helpful. Room was set up very neat and well. There were no problems or difficulties in the room. Was a very fun hour. read more

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! What a fun time! Very easy to make a reservation. You'll receive an email where you can conveniently sign a waiver and email it back to save you time when you arrive. Bathroom is readily available. Arrive 10-15 minutes before your start time so you can receive a short orientation. The host was very nice and helped up. COME TO THIS PLACE! In chatting with the owner, we quickly learned that he and his wife have made this business together and are both ex video game designers. This became so obvious as we played the room, as it was so so so creative and fun! They use a lot of locks, and it is slightly different than what we consider to be a conventional escape room because of how the game is structured. I thought about elaborating more, but I don't want to take away the fun of discovering it for yourself. We have done tons of escape rooms before, and this place stands out as the clues are very straight forward and you don't feel as though you're being penalized for missing a tiny detail that you think was irrelevant. That can be frustrating when it happens repeatedly and your time ticks away. At the end, they had different things you could wear in your photo that fit the theme. (Our room was 80's so they had provided denim garb and bright glasses) I thought this was so genius to fit the themes instead of the cheap boards people normally have you hold with cliches. So so original and fun! We can't wait to do every room. read more

We've visited Whole Brain Escapes 3 times over the last few months as they get each of their rooms online. We've done the three they have so far (Bustin' Out of the 80s, Escape the Supervillain's Lair, Seekers of the Mystic Orb) and each one gets better and better. Bustin' Out of the 80s was super-fun for me as a child of the 80s. Toys, videos, and props from the era made it as fun a room as it was challenging Escape the Supervillain's Lair is a solid room and they've improved it since we did it. I can only imagine it got better Seekers of the Mystic Orb is their newest room and I think it's their best. Great puzzles that really keep you thinking and a fun, non-linear experience. read more

My husband, four of our friends, and I had the amazing opportunity to visit Whole Brain Escape and escape from the 80s. We all had a wonderful time! I love puzzles and games and am very competitive so this was a great way to spend the afternoon. Some of the puzzles are tricky, but as first timers it was still easy enough to figure out.
