Cute little brewery that serves both beer and full coffee bar. There's a good menu too! 6-7 kinds of beer on tap and an equal array of coffees. The beers are solid. But very average. An average selection of bar foods as well. But the best one yet was the eggnog latte with rum! Must try!! read more

First visit last visit. We ordered the beef nachos, sent them back as they had no beef, then we received nachos with the greyest beef I've ever seen. When I asked the man if this was beef he said no it's Italian sausage, which contains pork I reminded him and almost no beef. I asked him to confirm, he came back and said it's beef with soy preservatives. I will not return to an establishment that A: does not know what it's ingredients are in there food and B: there solution was to lie to us. For breweries this place gets big stars for location to downtown, great decor, nice beer selections and reasonable prices for a beer. Additionally if you are with a designated driver there is a coffee and tea selection. The eats are limited but the place has enough to balance your beer selections. They clearly feature local artists (music) but didn't get a chance to hear what Nanaimo has to offer. Lots of options for seating. Nice day. Patio. Cold. Near the fireplace. Now, I'm a huge beer fan and living in the Pacific Northwest has spoiled us because we're surrounded by great craft breweries in Western Washington. Drove to Nanaimo and stopped in at the White Sails Brewery for a Flight sampler. Smash: clean crisp but a more bitter aftertaste than a traditional light beer. (2.5/5) Yellowpoint Pale: also crisp but flat in taste (2.5/5) Red cream: traditional cream taste. Smooth with mellow aftertaste (3/5) IPA: great aroma, traditional IPA taste with strong bitter taste. Nice atmosphere but beer was quite plain. Staff were friendly but beer was 25% higher then other breweries on the island. read more

If you have time to kill before getting in line for a ferry out of nearby Departure Bay, this is a great spot. We were 40 minutes early for our ferry reservation and decided that this brewery (just 5 minutes away from the ferry terminal) was where we'd while away some time. They have a parking lot in the back, so you don't need to try and find a spot on the street. The brewery has won international awards for their Mt. Benson IPA and Snake Island CDA--very impressive! We were, however, in the mood for some lighter styles on this occasion. I got a pint of the White IPA, while my SO got a pint of the Belgian Witbier. Both were solid renditions, and very refreshing for the hot May Monday that it was. Seating was ample, with plenty of tables set up. Food and coffee were also available if you needed a bite or didn't feel like consuming alcohol. The taproom is also family-friendly until the late evening, so you can bring your kids and make a fun Saturday afternoon out of it. White Sails is the only brewery I've visited in Nanaimo, but it was memorable despite our short visit. I'll certainly be back if I find myself needing a pint in Nanaimo again! read more

Beers were good and brewed right there but take a hard pass on the food. They even screwed up nachos.

I will never revisit this place. My husband was standing waiting to be helped and the guy working walked past him multiple times without acknowledging him. Two other customers came in after him and he went straight to them and started helping them choose beers they might like. He waited until they were finished talking and asked if dogs were allowed inside or if we could sit on the patio. The guy abruptly said that dogs aren't allowed and the patio is closed. He left feeling ignored and had the feeling that he had racially profiled him as there was no reason he could see for the difference in how he treated him versus the people that entered after him. Of the 3 breweries in Nanaimo I'd say this is my favourite, despite only being a couple years old. They already have national and international acclaim with their Mt. Benson IPA and Snake Island CDA. One best IPA in Canada and one best Dark IPA in the world (World Beer Awards). They also offer craft sodas and wine if beer isn't your thing. They have delicious home made soft pretzels with beer-cheese sauce. They encourage ordering or bringing food from other restaurants in Nanaimo to eat with your beer. They also have 2 "guest taps" that they rotate from breweries around BC which I love. Get to try something new on tap. read more

Big open beautifully decorated tasting room. The guy helping us didn't rush explaining their guest beers etc even though there was a bit of a line. I liked every beer in my tasting paddle, and the chips and salsa were so good. Warm chips and a tasty fresh salsa. Lots of board games and a nice fireplace. read more

Since I live without walking distance of the brewery, I'm biased: this is a great place to grab a beer. Lots of room to hang with friends. WiFi available. Munchies available. Great coffee from Regard Coffee Company. This place has been reliable for good customer service. read more

This is a new brewery in an old brewpub location. The place is beautiful with big fireplace and lots of natural light. They offer local sourced snacks like pretzels with hopes to offer more food items as they grow. We went in and did a flight of samples. We recommend the IPA, it was very good. As well as the smash. They are very new but are off to a great start and we can't wait to see more from them! read more

Can't say a lot about the brewing scene in Nanaimo since this is the only place we found. In that context, it was pretty good. There was an interesting mix of ages and types the evening we stopped by. The too-cool young woman working the bar was a bit much, but the other people working were fine. Very nice facility, but I always wonder how this kind of start-up operation can fund this kind of opulence. Trustifarians? Lottery winnings? read more

This is not to rate the beer tastings which were by the way absolutely wonderful, but to say how grateful we were to the staff and whomever handed in my friends black bag . He had just arrived from England ,was jet lagged and left his black bag with all documentation credit cards and cash on the seat . It was later that he realized what had happened and could not believe that someone had been so honest to hand the bag in and also that the staff at White sails are equally as stellar, It certainly made his first impression of Canada a very positive and appreciative one and in turn made us very proud to be Canadians ,Thank you White Sails staff on June 17th and to the honest person who handed in the bag . read more
