A short walk away is the bath house facility, which is clean and well-maintained. Also closeby is the firewood shed and the camp store (both cash only) which sells snacks, sundries and t-shirts. The park itself also has hiking trails and Atkins Arboretum - a gorgeous nature preserve with its own trails to enjoy. We spotted a pileated woodpecker, a downey woodpecker, and blue jays during our exploration.

In our social distancing era, the calculus changes perhaps, as the beaches will be crowded and this place will not. Most of the actual preserve is a gravel road; you don't need four-wheel drive or anything, but you'll be dusty. Of several trails, the one at the very end, Ferry Point, leads through an interesting manicured landscape with gnarly trees encircling the path. The offshoot labeled "jack-in-the-pulpit trail" suggested some nifty pitcher-plant looking foliage, but I saw nothing like that. Maybe I just didn't know what to look for. There's a small beach, and some people were using it for boating or fishing. The water was as pleasant as I've seen on the Eastern shore; calm, clear, and with plenty of plant life. So much of the Chesapeake shore is private land that it's nice to be able to see what the scenery looks like without a McMansion, and this preserve is not a place where I'd spend the whole day, but it is convenient to stop at on the way to or from other things.

The playground, piccadilly castle, is a large wooden playground that could use some updating. They have a smaller area reserved for only smaller children, which is nice when it's crowded with older kids and they have no regard for your toddler. It's neat to see some familiar names! I recommend this park and playground for those who have kids needing to get rid of energy or those who need to walk and clear their head.

When I saw that Brecknock Park had a wooden playground, I figured I had to check it out. The park is absolutely beautiful. There's lots of open space for throwing around a frisbee, jogging, picnicking, playing soccer - you name it! There's a small garden area to walk through that has the plants and trees labeled (always nice to get in a little outdoor education). The wooden playground was everything I'd hoped for - very well-maintained, lots of different jungle gym options, and I got in my obligatory swing set time on a nice, sturdy swing set. Whether you live in the area or are just passing through, I'd definitely recommend spending some time at this park. Wish I could have enjoyed it longer! I'll absolutely plan on stopping by again next time I'm visiting that area.

Dinosaur Park in Laurel, MD (near DC) is the perfect educational gem, family affordable admissions,…read morescientifically significant fossil site. Open regularly, but best visited on the first/third Saturdays for supervised digs, it features authentic, healthy outdoor exploration and paleontologist-led learning for kids, making it a priceless activity. So just because the stated hours are open during the week, doesn't mean there's anything going on and you can't like go behind the fence and there's no digs or anything, or even any place to walk. Sure there's picnic tables if you wanna just sit and eat your lunch with a bunch of corporate office buildings all around but it's definitely not something I would drive 45 minutes to unless you're actively going to one of the scheduled interpretive program.

Having found the occasion, I discovered the park was free, had some nicely kept facilities, and more paths than I had time to go through in bad weather. A variety of environments from swamp to beach await. There is too little public land on the bay, and this was one of the larger stretches in the area. This park runs along the Chesapeake Bay which is pretty cool and the views are pretty nice. I also like that there are various points of exiting and entering the park in case you want to do a long run and or bike ride. Most of us live in Annapolis but it is a really nice trail and worth hopping across the Bay Bridge. We have been meeting at the Macuum Creek parking lot off Piney Creek Rd. There is enough parking and nice public bathrooms so it is quite civilized. The first time, we walked west, back towards Stevensville & turned around at the high school, which was a couple of miles. This week, we walked the other way, so heading east. I think that was even prettier. There are some quiet sections and some places where you hear the traffic on Route 50. There are boardwalk and bridges over the creeks. The next time, I hope to take my bike.

The park is a straightforward short drive from the bay bridge going east, with a few restaurants and parks nearby. There were a few other families that were biking and hiking along the trail as well (all while maintaining social distancing), who were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately a few bad storms came through and made some damage to some of the walking bridges but there's still enough space for one to explore. There's several local businesses close by to Grab a snack. The park has ample seating for everyone and even benches close to the pier. If you plan to fish...bring a license. The area is stocked several times a year but that doesn't mean it's any easier...on this particular occasion I did well but there have been some other times where well my son did better. Whatever you do....don't allow your kid to bring an iPad lol...I've seen one of ours fall in the water...and although we got it back...it was never the same
