Penguins are first come, first serve. No refunds!

I can finally check 1) outdoor ice skating and 2) ice skating at the downtown Silver Spring rink off my bucket list. It's a nice alternative for something to do in DTSS but it's probably not the best choice to do on a Friday evening - there's lots of kids skating in every which direction, and with high traffic, the ice gets torn up pretty quickly. If there are any general rules for the rink, they're 1) not well advertised and 2) not enforced. There was one "skating assistant", identified with a red jacket, that was skating around on the ice to help pick people up when they fell down. I was actually surprised that the Zamboni came out every hour, because with all the tracks in the ice, it's hard to tell that it gets smoothed out at all. If you're a skating novice, there are cute penguin walkers that you can use - if you can get your hands on one. They're first come, first serve, and people like to cling onto them for dear life for as long as they can. They're a hot commodity, and there are actually signs posted that say no refunds will be issued due to lack of penguins (lol). The place employs mostly college and high school kids. Prices are fair - $13 total for one person ($9 admission + $4 skate rental). They give you a sticker to track that you paid and the approximate time you got there. You get to skate for two hours, which was more than enough time for us... when your ice skating skill level is simply trying not to fall without holding onto anything, you can only skate in circles on a tiny rink with little kids so many times. When you rent your skates, you trade in your shoes. Also, they didn't honor the yelp check-in deal (free hat or gloves) the evening we went. But they have colorful lights and music playing for an overall, A-OK experience.

We had a great time skating here between Christmas and New Years. We went during the afternoon and it was very crowded, but we didn't have any trouble getting around the rink. The ice does get pretty chopped up, but it was okay for us since we are beginners. The staff was very friendly and the Manager helped us when we checked in and sought us out later to see if we were having a good time. We will definitely come back!

Great place to ice skate and have parties. You can rent ice skates, helmets, and gloves from this facility. They keep the ice skating rink open until April if my memory serves me right. It's right in the heart of Down Town Silver Spring.

Great night; much fun skating with the family at Silver Spring! I probably come back next year!

    Thankful for this thing!

Decent rink. Excellent location, but the music is quiet and in my opinion poor. The ice is so-so, but on the plus side it isn't too busy.

This is an outdoor seasonal ice rink in our neighborhood. It's small, but kids love the penguin skate mates.

They break the groups up by age (little, teens, and adults). It was 30 minutes and leads up to the public skate. I love how they have different size guards for those of you who need skate assistance. While I was there, I saw there is a food and arcade area. You can bring your own skates or use their skates. They also offer Public skating sessions, Bday parties & private events, Family-friendly theme nights, and Lessons, camps, and community events. I'll definitely be back for public skate in 2026.

I usually over-function for birthday parties but they took care of EVERYTHING! I was late with all the deadlines (per usual) from submitting the guest list to finalizing the menu and they took it all in stride and were so accommodating and professional. The location was great for kids- had a nice size (not too big/too small ) skating rink and they have an arcade. With our party package we had a section, for not just the kids but for the adults so we could sit in a contained area together, the kids could rent a pair of skates and got a card to go play in the arcade. They also had an ice cream sundae bar where the kids could get ice cream and add toppings. The DJ definitely gave the birthday star several shout outs and even played a dedicated song. The venue provided party favors (some really nice ones I might add). We also had a designated party manager and she was the bomb dot com- shout out to Heidi!! We had a party with over 20 kids so it did get a little pricey but I felt it was well worth it. I will definitely come back and bring the kiddos, may even try to skate again myself lol.

I overheard him speaking to one of the favorite and well known skate instructors with a nasty tone. During this same visit he got snappy with me as well. MUST'VE WOKE UP ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE BED. I heard many complaints about how he runs out on the rink floor policing in an aggressive manner. He also has passed this behavior on to his Saturday afternoon skate guard. Customer service everything these days. Skating is supposed to be a therapeutic and safe place. I've tried many times over the last few months to visit this place but I do believe this is my last visit. I'd rather drive to Laurel and be treated with respect.

Before we came, I sent messages via their web site asking for rules and whether inline skating was allowed (just to be sure) and they never replied. We drove all the way down to find that they do not allow inline skating. The guy in the front desk was pretty snobby. He did offer a small room for inline skating and we accepted but we had to pay a full 10 dollars to skate around a small room instead of a full regular size rink and I didn't think it was fair.

The place is pretty easy to find though it is unlikely you'd just happen to drive by it, as it is kind of not on the beaten path. You can purchase everything ahead of time in terms of skate rentals and entry. It's pretty reasonable for one session mid-afternoon until close in the evening, you just need one entrance ticket/fee paid. You get your money's worth for sure if you are there for hours! You can bring your own skates or rent skates here- they have regular roller skates and roller blades. Both of these are in whole sizes, no half sizes, and both of them would be best on your feet with high socks that go to your lower calves, at least. Tying them tightly gives you the best skating, but that also pinches into skin if you don't have the right socks. They have an area for parties that includes a few arcade games, but mostly, you're there to skate. There are people there who are serious skaters going wicked fast and throwing some cool tricks, but we never felt bad in any way for not being one of the super talented skaters. There's a snack bar, too, with your classic fare like burgers, hot dogs, nachos, fries and funnel cake fries. Yummy snack junk food that makes the experience all the more reminiscent of young carefree days! They have lockers for your stuff, some don't even lock, but no one seemed concerned. There are benches for sitting and changing out your shoes to skates and vice versa, and people tend to just stash their shoes under the benches rather than get a locker. A good time all around and pretty affordable if you're there for a while!

Attended a birthday party with my seven year old son at Sportsman's Hall Roller Skating…read more Upon arrival, we were greeted at the front by an employee who was solely dealing with party check in. That's a great touch, as it got us through quickly without slowing down anyone who wasn't with a party. My son was given a voucher for skates and, after greeting the party guests, we headed over to get a pair. This was easy. He was in a pair of skates that fit in like two minutes. I planned on just sort of hanging with him but was informed outside shoes could not be on the skate floor. This was his first time so I sort of let him go and...it wasn't good. Thankfully there was a referee who helped him return to me. At this point I decided to get him a skate pal and rented my own pair of skates (both of which were super reasonable prices). The skating rink seemed to be in mostly good shape. There were a couple questionable spots. The rink has a DJ, snack bar and some games that people can play when not skating. The food was fine. The games were fine as well. Neither was spectacular. The host that was connected to our party was very attentive and accommodating. She explained everything that she was doing (almost too much). The one negative is the bathrooms. They are not very conducive to beginning skaters. Trying to keep my son from falling and conking his head on the toilet was a bit of a chore. Taking skates on and off is also a hassle and there isn't really anywhere to store them in or around the bathroom. I'm not sure what the solution is but, just know, bathroom going at the rink while wearing skates can be an adventure. Overall I thought Sportsman's Hall Roller Skating was a fine place to attend a kids birthday party.
