I moved to Eugene and was thinking wouldn't it be great if Eugene had such a place, and lo and behold, MECCA! It's like Seattle ReCreative but 10+ times larger! Paint, canvas, paper, folios, yarn, fabric remnants, yogurt tubs, wine bottles, plant pots, scrapbook papers, so much fun stuff to get you thinking creativity on a budget. My only suggestion is they might find a way to fill in the huge puddle right in front of their door, and that they somehow get more parking spaces!

This place is fun!…read more It's a great place to take the family, it works for all ages, and get a little crafty together. This time I made a mug, for my sister, with the theme from her baby shower on it. It was fun. There are stencils and all size brushes/sponges to choose from. There is also any color of paint that you could want. Pencils are provided if you need to draw your design before you paint it. I dont like to do this, I just go with the flow. :) It's convenient if you want to paint something and then go across the courtyard and grab some dinner from any one of the several restaurants in the area. Parking is easy too. Bring the family in! Your ceramics will be done in about a week and then they are yours to keep.

When we walked in we were greeted by Dana who was absolutely amazing at explaining the process to us. There was a ton of different items to choose from to start painting and lots of colors to choose. We had such a fun time together as a family and we cannot wait to come back again! Dana who was working was super nice, extremely kind, and patient with our young son! He made the experience that much better. I recommend 100% for a fun family time, date night, or even just alone time therapy painting.

This museum is excellent -& I admit, I've been misrepresenting it. Pre Covid I went to a show and was deeply underwhelmed. This past weekend while visiting, I ran into an acquaintance and we both commented "did they change something? Wasn't this kind of a meh experience before?" Maybe they got the bigger Schnitzer collection out? New curators? I don't know what happened but it was GREAT. New works are top notch Japanese & Korean collections are small but stellar Contemporary & modern North American artists very broad and high quality choices. Single user bathroom on the second floor also a big winner as is the elevator and the tiny but compelling gift shop. Kudos all around (Wish the cute cafe would open back up. Fingers still crossed)

The holidays are one of those times, and despite the heavy snow today, the galleries were open. Each of the little stores also functions as the studio space for the artist, so you can look around and see where the art is created. For the holiday events, they have free snacks and drinks, and they invite other artists to share the space with them. Today we mostly saw ceramics, painting, glasswork, jewelry, and modern art. The quality varied from 'quirky local' to some really high quality, beautiful pieces. The only thing I didn't care for was a mask with a bunch of George W. Bush faces on it, which was entitled "A Really Scarey Mask" I may be a Green Party voter who dislikes Bush as much as the next liberal, but that just seemed petty. I wouldn't buy from an artist who felt they had to make such cheap shots to gain the sympathy of the ultra liberal hippie community in Eugene. The other art was lovely though, I particularly enjoyed the work of Betsy Wolfston who makes paintings on ceramic. While the overwhelming theme was "Put A Bird On It", I found some very striking small landscape paintings of a slightly abstract nature. The smaller ones were mounted on wood, and only $50. They would make nice gifts, and I will likely return to get one next week. In short: Check it out whenever they open for special events, or get in touch with the artists directly to come see their work.

I have known their work when they showed in Portland galleries such as 1430 and RocksBox. The clean white space has gallery walls set up inside a vast industrial high ceiling building. For a large opening event, they had a coat check, beer and wine, and they have a small selection of printed matter for sale. They have limited hours and are only open select months of the year. Their regular hours and events are on their website and socials. You can contact them to visit by appointment other times in their season. On my visit was the thesis show by UO MFA students. AI-generated video was in evidence along with mixed media sculpture. It is in the Booth-Kelly Makers District. Part is an industrial area East of the Willamette and South of downtown on the wrong side of the tracks in a good way. Before Homer Simpson and the nuclear plant, the Booth-Kelly lumber mill was a major employer, from 1901 when they bought the Springfield Mill, to 1931 when they closed as a result of the Great Depression. In the industrial part here is also a large brick building which was the biomass electricity plant that ran the mill and Eugene-Springfield. The city parks school buses. School buses when parked seek the most basic real estate to minimize school budgets. So if you are looking for cheap space, they are a good indicator. The Booth-Kelly trail starts there. The entire project is owned and operated by the City to host and incubate small businesses. The parking is gravel, so you already know NW puddles. Wear appropriate footwear. The lots are clean and the buildings keep up with waste collection. Ditch Projects is the Springfield-Eugene nonprofit contemporary art gallery. There is enough space for the work to breathe. If you visit Eugene, they would be a good resource on local contemporary visual art.

So stopping at Bree's Way, which is a new-to-me store (I'm not sure it was here even four years ago when I came home to visit) was a must stop. The woman there was really friendly, but they didn't have anything that called to me. Their jewelry selection was ok but limited; mostly rings and some pendants. They sell some chains for the pendants. They also have a lot of the standard Tarot decks, some esoteric and occult-related merchandise, posters, crystals, and so on.
