My sister and I went to the First Friday Art Walk a few days ago and stopped in since it was one of the major stops on the Walk. They have a wide range of art styles represented here; we saw painting, photography, jewelry, fiber arts, and more. The gallery extends invitations artists to be members of the gallery based upon their non-juried art exhibitions that happen twice per year. Whilst the First Friday Art Walk is one way they regularly welcome in the community, they also host a bunch of workshops. I was surprised to see how full their schedule is, and the cost of the workshops are incredibly reasonable--I think I even saw on that accepted donations on a sliding scale. Given its location downtown, it's very easy to visit via LTD or of course by car. There isn't dedicated parking but there's a city lot on the next block, as well as street parking.

You can view the giant mural 24 hours a day and it's completely free. The mural is incredibly detailed so Simpsons super nerds should allow some time to truly study it. It presents a great photo opportunity but be careful when taking pics: you have to stand in the middle of the street to get the entire thing in view. This is just so cool to pose in front of. One of the best-kept secrets in all of Springfield.

They've got prints, silkscreens, pottery, you name it. Underlying asisan theme, but a few other items that aren't really in any category artist wise. Truly a worthwhile to stop and admire beautiful asian inspired art. I was particularly fond of some prints towards the back in a book. What I could do with a mere $800 in extra art funds floating around!

The 2nd & Blair Artists Collective is an independent group of artists in the Whit who share studios…read morein the Historic Pierce Building, where they occasionally open to the public. The holidays are one of those times, and despite the heavy snow today, the galleries were open. Each of the little stores also functions as the studio space for the artist, so you can look around and see where the art is created. For the holiday events, they have free snacks and drinks, and they invite other artists to share the space with them. Today we mostly saw ceramics, painting, glasswork, jewelry, and modern art. The quality varied from 'quirky local' to some really high quality, beautiful pieces. The only thing I didn't care for was a mask with a bunch of George W. Bush faces on it, which was entitled "A Really Scarey Mask" I may be a Green Party voter who dislikes Bush as much as the next liberal, but that just seemed petty. I wouldn't buy from an artist who felt they had to make such cheap shots to gain the sympathy of the ultra liberal hippie community in Eugene. The other art was lovely though, I particularly enjoyed the work of Betsy Wolfston who makes paintings on ceramic. While the overwhelming theme was "Put A Bird On It", I found some very striking small landscape paintings of a slightly abstract nature. The smaller ones were mounted on wood, and only $50. They would make nice gifts, and I will likely return to get one next week. In short: Check it out whenever they open for special events, or get in touch with the artists directly to come see their work.

Eclectic mix of FAB homemade candy (to actually die for); Sexy girlie shop upstairs; Wonderful art gallery full of locals art. Very well curated with lovely staff who shared some wonderful stories about the artists they represented. Can't say enough about this little store / shop. If in the area for a snoop around, do pop in, you won't be disappointed.
