What a wonderful drive to get there on a warm, sunny Spring day. My pictures of the outside of the building don't do it justice since the sap is just starting to rise in the ivy covering the structure. In the summer the ivy will be bright green and in the autumn it will scream out all the fall colors from yellow to bright red! The pub is clean and truly charming, with many interesting memorabilia and decorative pieces around. The bar is well stocked (actually there are 3 bars), not huge by any means, but it is a Free House (note to my US friends - that means not tied a particular brewery so they can stock and sell drinks from multiple sources. All the staff we saw, including the owner and the chef, were very friendly and hospitable. Does not get much better than this! There is a very nice beer garden for some al fresco dining or a beer out on a sunny day (like yesterday :) ). The garden is very nice, private with several tables and even a little decorative fountain. In terms of food (why we drove all that way - 75 minutes for us) it was great and I will post the menu. The chef would walk around, take orders and make sure that everything was truly enjoyed and it was! We both chose pies (see pics), Mrs G had the venison pie (puff pastry) and I couldn't resist the rabbit pie (suet pastry) both locally sourced of course. Yes I succumbed to the special blackberry and apple crumble with custard while Mrs G took the lemon curd ice cream in a brandy snap cup. YES - everything was delicious. Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.

Strangely this was recommended by Expedia as one of the best pubs in Britain. Not true. Just very good. Claim to fame is it is close to Monsal trail walking along disused rail line from Buxton to Matlock. I assume walkers pile in during the day.

We were only stopping through for a couple of days, but still managed to pack in an afternoon of ales, cider and pool at The Cock and Pullet pub. It's a charming little pub chock full of classic English heritage. The staff were lovely and accommodating and the selection of ales, ciders and beers were most superb. If you find yourself up in this beautiful neck of the woods (it's literally right in the middle of the picturesque Peak District),I'd highly recommend that you stop in for a Tipple!

During our visit we ate in the restaurant several times. The Fish n Chips were fabulous, very tasty and not greasy. The Toad in the Hole was another favorite and a new experience for this American. The Sunday Roast was second to none. The owners, Diane and Phil, are very hands on with their business and are delightful to speak with. When we are back in the area, I know where we will be staying.

Only open a couple of days a week - at the weekend - it serves quite reasonable food and fantastic beer - personally I love the absolution. The landlord is usually to be found drinking a bowl of tea in the bar by the fire with his whippets and reading the Telegraph. I wish it was my local great way to spend a Saturday lunchtime in the middle of a days walking! Be warned though it doesn't suit everyone though for the life of me don't know why!!

Popped in on the way back from a cold day out at Alton Towers…read more We got a lovely warm welcome, were quickly seated near a roaring fireplace and settled in for a great meal accompanied by some very well kept Hartington IPA. The pub is cosy and friendly, and in a great location for walkers and cyclists on the Tissington trail. We'll definately be heading back soon (to the Royal Oak not Alton Towers, which is another story)!

We had been meaning to go there for months having once passed it on a walk near Birchover. When we finally made it we were not disappointed and had one of the best lunchtime drinks in a long time. The regulars there were inclusive and entertaining and a right old laugh to be honest. The food was good (just a fish finger cob but the bacon butties looked tasty) and a realistic price not much over a couple of quid. The fire was lit and the landlord was cheery. I will be going back.
