The food is amazing, the best pub food we have found in our 6 years in the UK so far. The menu changes regularly and includes many hearty, slightly chefy takes on classic English fare. A great rotation of real ales on tap as well. We've been back there several times since or first visit back in 2009, and the food and service has always been consistent, which is what separates a great pub from a good pub. I would strongly encourage anyone reading this to give this pub a try. It isn't a chain and is really trying hard to give locals really good food at a decent price. There is another Fox pub on the main road between Harpenden and Luton, but if you are looking for a review of that one, I can tell you the Darley Hall Fox blows that one away for quality and value, so take the extra few minutes to find this slightly hidden gem in the countryside behind the airport.

We hoped to have a relaxed lunch before setting back to our respective homes, in different parts of the country each journey being between 3 and 5 hours. The pub had a real fire but with the guard in front of it the dining room did not benefit from the heat. We ordered the meals with starters and mains, the starters took about 15 to 20 minutes to arrive, and were ok however, my brother had to ask for more bread to eat his pate with. 1 hour later cold and hungry and on the verge of getting up to go our main meals arrived (Sunday roasts). The chicken breasts were described as cooked in foil and covered in a sauce the chicken breasts were not covered in a sauce and were totally dry, the roast beef were thick slices and a good portion but as tough as old boot, the potatoes were out of a frozen packet as were the vegetables. The meals were cold with the gravy warming up what it covered, the yorkshire puddings were burnt and I mean black. It is the worst meal I have eaten in a years and if it was not due to time restraints we would have left them and walked.

It is welcoming, well run and clean. A wide selection of beers, spirits and real ales (with many guest ales) are kept in stock. There is a popular pool table. Personally this was my first time here and I went with some friends if mine. The food was very good and served in a reasonable time, all dishes in one go meaning that attention has been paid from the chef. I had a lamb burger with potato wedges and coleslaw in a mango sauce. The meat was medium cooked as requested and the coleslaw very nice. My wife had a steak and ale pie. The stew was very tender and the sauce not bitter at all (Which us something that it happens very often). Can't comment on my friend dishes as they went for an ordinary sausages and scampi both with fries. However portions were generous enough. The pub is an old grade listed place and our was very nice to stay in. Chimney were off, but I'm sure that they can add a nice touch and make the environment very pleasant. Price wise, it's on the average. I'll will definitely go back again.
