On the surface, this looks like a nice pub. It had a good menu, a clean and welcoming interior and…read morelots of seating. I know this pub of old and it has a reputation for good food but inconsistent service. If you want the short story - the service was atrocious, and I simply can't recommend this to fellow yelpers. if you're up for the long story, read on to find out why... I came here with my brother and sister-in-law on a Saturday lunchtime. We luckily (!) got a table that had just been vacated by a couple who left without having food. We placed our order at the bar at 1312h and got our drinks. Then we waited ... and waited. Tables around us were getting food although at least one table was obviously having difficulty as only some of their party had received food. After 30 mins, I was getting rather twitchy and when a table who had arrived after us received food, I tackled one of the waitresses. She was very apologetic and went to the kitchen to get us an update which was: 'Sorry for the delay, your meals are being plated up now and will be out in a couple of minutes'. Great! However this turned out to be a total fob off and 15 minutes later we were still waiting. As we were about to call time and leave, two plates arrived. Mine didn't - and after another 10 minutes when the others were half-way finished, frustrated (and very hungry) I intercepted another waitress. Her response: 'we have a large party of 28 in and it's causing a delay'. I informed her that that was not a valid excuse as my companions had received their food. I also told her it was unacceptable that we had not been informed when we ordered of any delay and the service and honesty of the staff was obviously lacking. She scuttled off to get a manager and after I received an apology, my food arrived within another 3 minutes. The cost of my food was refunded, however, the whole experience was disappointing and unpleasant. It may shock you further to know we just ordered 2 steak ciabattas and a mackerel bap with soup (not fries). Not complicated, not difficult and when my mackerel bap finally arrived over an hours after I ordered it, it came with fries, not soup! Avoid.

Returned to try this pub restaurant today after a long time away. A friend told me this week the…read morelast managers had done a bunk. The pub / restaurant has only been open for 3 days and the new management were very welcoming. The beer was well kept or so my husband told me - £3.60 fior a pint of Abbot seemed slightly expensive though. The food was good, my husband had butternut squash soup and I had a parfait of chicken livers. We followed with Roast Beef accompanied by horseradish sauce. I would have liked more gravy on my dinner and a little more beef but that was my only gripe. We shared the cheese plate for desert, 1 cheddar and 2 blue cheeses one of which was stilton, would have preferred only 1 blue cheese, came with two small slices of bread and some dried apricots. We had the last two beef available so I assume this is why the portion was small -the 1 slice was thick and pink and very tasty. £1.50 for sparkling water is pretty average and the large glass of rose wine was £5.50 but nothing special. We will definitely go back to try this again. We had a wonderful walk after lunch down the lane opposite where the beautiful village pond is awash with ducks and geese. Awaiting you is a bench in the shade uinder the tree.....Highly Recommended. There is also a house opposite the pub with a stand outside which sells fresh vegetables, plants and the best preserves and chutneys you have ever tasted all at great prices. Came home with a jar of pickled onions, a jar of red onion chutney and 3 salvia plants.

What can I say about the King's Arms? I'm at home here. When we moved to the UK, honestly our most…read moredesired feature was walking distance to a pub. We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.
