As time went on we decided that we would like to stay and have dinner here but indoors as it was getting cold. There were 14 of us and they managed to fit us into the restaurant area on the proviso we ordered quickly before the 6:30pm booking arrived and one table had to vacate by 8pm. The staff were great and we did not feel that we were being rushed even though some people had starters. A lot of us picked from the specials board and the food came out devine and the service was outstanding. The place was busy as it was the jazz/fringe festival weekend so the clientelle was of all ages (a bit annoying having babies/kids screaming thoughout the meal) including elderly who came in through the fire door for easy access. I would definitely recommend this place which is also dog friendly. This place is soo good that Seasick Steve was playing there that evening and eating his dinner in the pub part as we left.

Yes the clientele is slightly on the rougher side, but really what do you expect in Merthyr Tydfil. But now, let me tell you a few things about the Wyndham that may come of surprise; the bar stock pretty much everything and anything, prices are god damn reasonable, the music is good and the place is generally very clean. So clean, customers even take their dogs there. Rough, scary looking beasts that once patted are as cute natured as a new born pup. The pub itself is big and airy and in general, a nice place to be. OK, the customers usually have no teeth and are completely plastered before the shops open but let me tell you now, what a bloody educating place the Wyndham is. Be warned, everyone will turn and look as you make your grand entrance, but once again, welcome to Wales! If your lucky enough to not get stared at and actually get involved with the conversation, i can guarantee, hands down, you'll have one of the best little afternoons of your life!

The hotel has 10 ensuite bedrooms. We found the rooms clean, comfortable and reasonably spacious but perhaps in need of a little updating. There is not T.V. lounge or rooms solely for the use of hotel guests. However, this is perhaps compensated by a large and comfortable lounge bar. A large T.V. is at one end but this area is seperated off and thus is unobtrusive to those located in the main area. Rev. James and Hancocks H.B. on draft are the pick of the beers. Choice of lagers, wines etc also available. There is also a garden at the back of the hotel for warm and sunny weather. We booked in at the hotel on a half board basis for a whole week and during that time never had a disappointing meal. Good choice of food ranging from local sausages, salmon, half roast duck, crevettes and various steaks. Portions are generous to the point that you may wish to consider a 2 course meal instead of the normal three courses. The fixed price lunchtime menu is excellent value. If available, try the salmon with saffron sauce and Bacardi and Blueberry cheesecake. The website has sample menus. We found the staff friendly and efficient and would happily recommend this inn/hotel to others seeking a reasonably priced establishment in one of the most attractive parts of Wales.

A huge plateful that would be enough for two! the most reasonable is the Roast dinners, approx £10 a head. The walls and ceilings of the Inn are covered in memorobilia, from horse brasses to farming tolls, there is enough to occupy your mind while you wait for your meal. On your way to the loo you will encounter a full suit of armour, and in the back are fish tanks, and a talking parrot!

Let's start with the positive: inside, this place is really pretty. The layout allows for lots of little nooks and crannies, with the restaurant seating towards the back after a small but functional pub. Exposed brickwork and beams lend the venue a classy feel. The service was attentive and friendly and food came out quickly. Dishes seemed reasonably priced with a 10oz sirloin steak topping the menu at £18. Unfortunately, there's less positive news to report. Firstly, drinks are not offered as part of the table service. Neither are guests provided with a drinks menu or wine list (despite many being available behind the bar). Instead, guests are required to get up, go to the bar, order their own drinks and carry them to the table. That's despite our table being laid out with wine glasses (and glasses for water we were never offered or provided). The menu itself is extensive enough, however half way through our dinner we spotted a promotion for a dish that wasn't included. It turned out to be included on a specials list we weren't provided with but was scrawled on a specials board out of sight to more or less every table. Talking of the table, ours was sticky and needed a good wash. Once we ordered our starters we were actually asked if we would like clean cutlery for the next course. That's a first. The food itself was inadequate. Our steak was over cooked (medium rare was closer to well done) and the chicken coach tasted dry and I strongly suspected had been cooked from frozen. We left feeling this venue has bags of potential. It's appointed well but everything from our entrance went downhill (with the exception of a couple of delicious deserts). It needn't be that way. If they changed their silly drinks policy, provided a full menu, washed down the tables, gave a little more care to the food and generally extended the quality of the building to the experience of their guests, this would be at least a four star place to spend time.

The Rake & Riddle caters for everyone with a tidy sized restaurant, sports bar and cafe. There is an outdoor seating area and play area for the kids. With a tidy sized car park to the rear. I had the mixed grill, which was cooked perfectly, and my wife had the Gammon which she thoroughly enjoyed. The chips that came with both are cooked just like regular chip shop chips, which is a major plus from us. The price is comparable with similar restaurants and I felt the portions were good value for the money.
