This Review is in regards to the restaurant aspect of Norton Park Hotel; I would like to begin by acknowledging the Corporate undertones given off by this hotel and must state that while it explains meal prices to the extent they are no longer shocking. It does little to explain bad food. The staff although not unfriendly by any stretch are trained poorly in dealing with people. The only saving grace is the location and outwards appearance of the hotel which ignoring the broken sign is everything the hotel aims for: Elegant, understated and overall very satisfying to arrive at, no matter the time of day.

After tons of research, my friend and I decided on the Carnarvon Arms, an inn near Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey!!!). We arrived late morning after our flight to Heathrow. While it was too early to check in, we did sit down for lunch. For anyone who has said the Brit's aren't known for their food, they have never eaten here. I ordered a typical American breakfast of avocado toast and eggs. But let me say there was nothing typical about it. The eggs were locally sourced, pasture-raised with the most lovely colored yolks and they were PERFECTLY poached! The sourdough toast was soooo good. My friend ordered the homemade local sausage and mashed potatoes. OMG!!! I've never had food so good. And can I mention my cappuccino?!?! Perfect!!! And since this is England I also had tea which was delicious. After a visit to Stonehenge, we came back, checked in and decided to give dinner and go since we thoroughly enjoyed lunch. Let me say it didn't disappoint! I've never had fresh peas before and after eating these gems, I'm ruined - how could I possibly eat frozen again!!! My fish and chips were amazing. The menu was quite busy and there were several chef specials on the board- all standard pub grub fare. We ordered a burger with brie and chorizo and a buttermilk fried chicken burger. After a 25 minute wait, both were dry, over cooked and bland. The accompanying fries were ok but served in a ceramic pot so after the first few, became cold and soggy. The homemade slaw was the best thing on the plate, but the pot was only 1/4 full - a scant tablespoon at most. The burgers were over £10 a pop, so poor value and poor service.

It was definitely amusing to me, going up then down then up again in an effort to get to our room. Also if you want to find a ghost in your room, then this is the hotel for you, as a bathroom door slamming closed in your room in the middle of the night even though the window's closed and no one got up is certainly an interesting experience.

But it is tough to push the heritage angle when there is a big Premier Inn sign outside. I like Premier Inns but I doubt that Jane was dropping her mail off in a purple lobby with an eastern European handing out breakfast coupons. . These people have missed the boat. Heritage is not the selling point here. They really should talk about the decent pints and food available here. Four pulled ales from four different brewers, each of them a very nice pint. The food was really good. A gourmet burger for myself and the usual collection of sides that these places have reserved especially for Vegans (how do you indicate sarcasm in a Yelp review?) Actually they had nothing for Vegans. Meat was in everything. Boar Burgers and Old Spot Pork? Hey animals get it right up ya! I had a front room, 102, that was big and warm and comfy. The shower had a 90 degree squirting problem but otherwise fine. No restaurant anymore, but the bar food was pretty good. I had a ploughman's, a risotto, ham hock terrine and a chocolate mousse over the two nights I spent here, and they were all lovely. The barman was very nice and helpful, and the receptionists pleasant. The only thing is that is is too dark to walk into town in the evening. It's about a mile but pitch black! No street lights and the paths were strewn with leaves and branches. Scary.
