Stayed here, they advertise 'Breakfast included'. Don't be fooled it isn't! So had to look elsewhere first thing in the morning for breakfast. Room was ok though, bed a little uncomfortable. Staff? Never really saw them! read more

It's just a…read moreshort walk from the Winchester train station and about a 10 min walk to Jewry Street which has plenty of restaurants and bars. There is free parking if you elect to drive, though the massive parking lot in front of the hotel does not make for the most dramatic of entrances. While it's an older property, the lobby looks recently renovated and surprisingly modern. Room was clean and bath/bed would as you expect from a 3* property. The complex has a nice indoor pool and sauna which I did not expect to find in Winchester. Free fast wifi was a great perk. Overall this was good value and should be on your short list for a clean safe and recently renovated hotel.

Very clean room, really nice. The main meals were good but it was really let down by the cooked breakfast items. Watery pale scrambled egg, and the usual sausages, bacon, mushrooms, baked beans. Had a bit of everything first morning, felt a bit horrible. Next day had toast beans and hash browns only, the best bits. Also a small continental type breakfast (meats and cheeses) which were nice. But just one type of egg and poorly done wasn't what I expected from a four star. Food has to follow in the upgrade! Ooh almost forgot, did have a room service burger, that was very very nice.

This Review is in regards to the restaurant aspect of Norton Park Hotel; I would like to begin by acknowledging the Corporate undertones given off by this hotel and must state that while it explains meal prices to the extent they are no longer shocking. It does little to explain bad food. The staff although not unfriendly by any stretch are trained poorly in dealing with people. The only saving grace is the location and outwards appearance of the hotel which ignoring the broken sign is everything the hotel aims for: Elegant, understated and overall very satisfying to arrive at, no matter the time of day.

The old house, though, is beautiful, so if you are going to stay pay the extra for one of those rooms. We had arrived very late at night after driving for 5 hours nonstop and we found off street parking as we knew we would be leaving early in the morning for the ferry. The staff was very friendly and directed us to our room with helpful information about what restaurants close by that was still open that they could recommend . The standard double room has a queen size bed , a flat screen tv with a ensuite bathroom. The bathroom has a bath with a monsoon shower head inside. It is very high end price for a standard room but location was key for us! I would stay here again if travelling to Poole ferry port.

Premier Inn
Premier Inn is a pretty basic hotel chain. Don't expect five star service here, but as far as three…read morestar hotels go, this place is ok. The location of the hotel is pretty convenient- in the Leisure Park area of town. Abundant free parking, and a shuttle bus to the railway station just behind the hotel (with a day pas only £2.30). Pretty close to the M3 and fairly easy to get to. As far as accommodations, the rooms are newly renovated with wall mount flat screen televisions, neutral colors, and several USB plugs per room. The bathroom was a bit on the tiny side, and the shower didn't drain properly even after we had alerted maintenance. Despite the fact that this hotel chain seems to pride themselves on comfortable beds, the twin bed in my room was anything but- I could almost feel the springs coming through the sheets, it was a fairly rough night. The full size bed in the room seemed to be better however- though neither had really good pillows. There is a Beefeater pub right next door that serves typical fare- as well as breakfast for hotel guests. Prepare for the hotel staff to try to sell you a meal package upon checkin- for me it wasn't worth it as I don't eat breakfast.
The Swan Hotel

It is all the nicer for being at one end of the Watercress Line, a steam railway that meanders through the countryside from Alton, than which there is no finer way to arrive. The Swan is a classical 18th century front (I guess) which inside is part coaching inn and part modern bar/diner. There is a stylish main bar with quite a large patio out back. Good local ales plus all the usual other beers etc are available. Off to the side is a restaurant with more of a panelled coaching inn feel to it. My wife and I dined there one fine summer's evening for our wedding anniversary. I had a lovely parsnip soup followed by very tasty lamb, and my wife had mozzarella and tomato starter followed by sea bass. Apart from the tomato starter (which used ordinary tasteless english salad tomatoes instead of proper Italian plum ones) the food was very tasty and we followed it with a 'Can't decide' - 5 mini portions of different deserts. All home made and all fantastic. So a great place for an intimate meal for two, would also be lovely for a family or a group, and what a beautiful town!

I know it seems incredible to consider but it's true that many Europeans just don't like Americans, especially in rural areas. It does not occur to them that we are not all the same, that most of our states are bigger than their little country and we boast incredible diversity of ethnicity, culture, morality, character and personal behaviors. For us it's absolutely impossible to avoid because as soon as we open up our mouths, our accents betray our origins. I have to allow that Londoners are better about this, being an international city. So if you would like the staff to argue relentlessly with you over something mundane, try and correct your pronunciation of foreign words (the English are famous for mispronouncing non-English words), take hours to serve you terrible/overcooked food, which when you say something they insist is perfect, sleep in highly uncomfortable beds and treat you as if you are a lower form of life then this is definitely the place for you!
