It's hard not to notice some scary one-star reviews for Queens Boulevard Extended Care (QBEC). But…read moreI see similar reviews for other hospitals, rehabs, nursing homes, etc. Our sad national reality is that these facilities are being horribly squeezed by insurers, especially Medicaid and Medicare, and at a time when our aging population is boosting patient census. So yes, there are times when a patient will ring for care and wait a long time for response. I experienced some of this during the early part of my one-month stay at QBEC before I became ambulatory. It's horrible. But until our societal priorities change, these facilities will always be strained and need more staff than they can afford. I'm angry, but not a QBEC. I'm angry about the societal values that limit what QBEC and all other such facilities can do. But as for the tings QBEC can control . . . I'd give more than five-stars if I could. This facility's strength is its people. All patients have a choice in how they will interact with staff; either respectfully or with disdain. Those who choose to treat staff with respect will find that the nurses, CNAs (aides), and transport people, are amazing. With all the horrible things we see in the news today, it's so uplifting to experience the kindness, compassion, and just-plain niceness staff gladly delivers. I started on the second floor and eventually was moved to the fourth. Interaction with staffs on both floors was always delightful. No matter how messed up I was physically, my interactions with staff always made me feel much better. I especially want to call out the physical and occupational therapists. I worked with Marriel (I hope I spelled her name correctly) for PT and Luciana for OT. Thanks to their knowledge, kindness and supportiveness, I can now walk unaided (I came home with a can and walker, but both are now optional)... even though I entered the facility as a dead-weight blob that could barley turn over in bed. I was told by others at the outset how hard therapy would be and folks around me wondered if I would really embrace it. Yes, it is a challenge. But Marriel and Luciana made it easy to embrace. They were never soft on me. They pushed me, often hard, to the point where I needed a nap after each session. But they never caused pain. They always knew how far they could push beyond what I had previously done, and that what their aim. And, of course, they always watched with eagle eyes and took appropriate precautions to make sure I was safe. And by choosing to always do therapy in the gym, as opposed to in my room, I was able to observe other therapists and patients. I saw other therapists work effectively with their patients at whatever condition the latter were. All were different, but I saw all make gradual progress each day. I'm happy to be home now. Who wouldn't be! But there is one bittersweet aspect to this. I have to say I think about and miss the many wonderful people at QBEC that showed me so much kindness and support.

The care was sub standard. They have staff that are under experienced and skilled. The place is run…read moredown and needs a good overhaul. The food is barely edible. The kitchen does not pay attention to dietary restrictions: e.g. diabetic needs. Time they raised their standard.

She is more than just great - she is superb, super fantastic and goes "above and beyond" for all her clients. We are extremely satisfied with the entire Alvita Care family, and will continue to use their services for all our home care needs. Do not go to anyone else. Beth, as well as the entire Alvita Care family, are simply the best! Most recently, Beth also assisted us in hiring two home care attendants that are both absolutely perfect in every regard.. and one of them is even bilingual, as we had requested. We just couldn't have done it without Beth. She has been indispensable, and has patiently helped us throughout this entire process. She is definitely the greatest asset that Alvita Care can ever have. While the agency sent a replacement, this experience shows a critical lack of vetting. They also sent a tiny woman to assist (and lift) a six-foot man. She was totally incapable of performing ANY needed tasks. Again, not properly vetted. Furthermore, they demand a credit card (and probably all such agencies do) prior to providing the service. And despite being given access to the appropriate insurance, which pays them directly, they bill the credit card. They end up being paid twice and the client is forced to deal with the credit card issue. The two stars, instead of one, are for the people who actually were helpful, both immigrants.

Just know, you are better off with Medicare aids or none at all. I will be reporting Aquinas to NY AG's Office as well. Meantime, be careful.

My uncle in Manhattan is getting older and needed some help. He was resistant and not really in the…read moreright frame of mind to look for someone. I'm in Maryland but he doesn't have any family nearby so I am the next best thing. I didn't know how to go about looking for someone. I called a couple of home care agencies but they were expensive and was not sure what we were getting for $25 to $27 an hour. When i looked online there were many different ways to go and I was a bit overwhelmed. So I went on Yelp which i periodically due for restaurants and such. I was surprised that LeanOnWe jumped at me. The reviews were strong and they were varied. At first I didn't realize that they were any different than the home care agencies. Then i realized that they weren't an agency but just a way for me to connect with someone that my uncle would end up hiring. Very clever. Since my uncle would be hiring the caregivers, it was meaningfully less expensive but would give us everything we were looking for. So I called up and told LeanOnWe what my uncle was dealing with, where he lives, and what he was looking for. They sent bios of 5 people who fit the bill, my uncle and i spoke to two of them on the phone and decided to hire one of them. It worked out great. What a creative way for us to manage this process. We would have been stuck otherwise. So far the woman we chose has been working for about three weeks and all is working well. It is nice knowing that if she can't make it we can always go back to LeanOnWe and find someone else. A happy customer

Unfortunately -I must give them a very negative review. I…read morehave asked them numerous times to assist me in replacing a live-in caregiver who has created a very toxic environment for us. The caregiver constantly manipulates the family against each other in order to get his way. Every time I try to replace him the agency interferes and ignores my requests even though I am the one hired them and I am the one who pays the caregiver who I dislike immensely. I should not have to be a situation where I am forced to keep a caregiver that I dislike. They don't return my phone calls and they ignore my requests to get a different caregiver. Instead of working with me to replace this caregiver who has created an extremely toxic environment, the agency will go behind my back and reach out to another family member who has very little to do with the caregiving, is easily manipulated and it results in arguments about replacing the caregiver. I don't want a caregiver who is only in it for the money and who does not have patients wellbeing in mind. I constantly have to step in and make sure the patient is being cared for. I should be allowed to replace a caregiver that I have no trust in. The caregiver should not be in charge and the agency should not be in charge. Thay have made a difficult situation even more difficult by pitting family members against each other. I dislike them immensely. Be careful
