CenterPlace Market - Who serves their hot food on granite platters? Centerplace, that's who.

If you don't know Tenino, it's in the backroads, even for me and I live in the backroads. Who…read morewould've thought that they have a supermarket with bougie tastes that is worthy of a side track because it's foodie heaven. This grocery shares space with an Ace Hardware and that in oneself is charming, but walk around and check out the inventory. Starting from the front of the market, they had a banana pudding flavored Appalachian moonshine in a mason jar, right next to another one that tastes like Eggo waffles. That's crazy. They have small packs of antipasto to go in case you want to have a small picnic on your drive. They serve their hot food on slabs of granite charcuterie boards which shoes that they're trying hard. The cake case has cool cakes you wouldn't expect, including a single slice of mango cake that must have weighed a couple of pounds. They serve their pre-made cold sandwiches on ciabatta or large biscuits. They sold tins of tea in cylinders with windows on them so you could see the mix of tea ingredients. Plus they had some cool stickers on sale on a rack and that's my jam. What a cool, curated inventory. Who is the buyer here? Because Bravo!! I will be back because this place isn't just a fun place to grab a snack- it should be a local foodie destination.

My family and I had one of the most absurd and frustrating grocery store experiences I've ever seen…read moreat Blanton's Grocery Store. My aunt (44) and uncle were using the self-checkout and bought a case of beer. Instead of simply checking the ID of the person purchasing the alcohol, the employee demanded to see the ID of everyone standing anywhere nearby. My aunt, who is clearly well over 21, was forced to show ID even though she wasn't the one paying. Then my sister (24) and her boyfriend (32) were also told they had to show ID just for standing nearby. They actually had to walk all the way back outside to their vehicle just to grab their IDs to satisfy this ridiculous demand. The part that really pushed things over the edge is that my sister's boyfriend is a U.S. veteran who was injured while serving our country. It's incredibly ironic that someone can be 18 years old and old enough to enlist, risk their life, and serve the United States, but this same person gets treated like a criminal and harassed in a grocery store just to prove they're over 21 while standing next to family members buying groceries. And somehow the situation still got more ridiculous. I was standing by the doorway waiting for my family and I was also asked for ID, despite not even being part of the transaction. Every single person involved was clearly and obviously over 21. This didn't feel like someone responsibly following policy. It felt like a teller on a complete power trip who decided to make things difficult for absolutely no reason. I've worked in customer service and hospitality for over 8 years, including time in a grocery store, so I understand alcohol laws and regulations. Verifying the purchaser's age is standard practice. But demanding ID from every adult in the general vicinity, even someone standing by the door, is beyond excessive and completely unnecessary. The irony is we walked across the street to the gas station afterward and had zero issues. Blanton's managed to turn a simple grocery stop into an unnecessarily hostile experience. If this is how management chooses to treat customers, don't be surprised when people take their business elsewhere.

It isn't much to look at, and it's not the cleanest market, but I got food. I got snacks. That was a big deal!!! Definitely like knowing it's there for my next trip to Rainier!!!

All in all I highly recommend them. Over the years, I had other arrangements: CSA, Full Circle... But Helsing is the best experience for me.

We've been really pleased with our CSA share from Helsing this year and will sign up with them…read moreagain next year if we're still living in Olympia. We tried a different CSA last year (there are four local organic CSA options that deliver to my husband's workplace) and we much prefer Helsing. We like Helsing better because they have given us more variety, because we adore the fruit share, and because they have taken the time to provide good recipes. We signed up for the mini share and are hard pressed to keep up with what we receive every week! There are the two of us and we're vegetarians, yet we get so much from them every week that we can't eat it all before the next batch arrives. We freeze, can, or give away extra, it's that generous. The CSA we had last year from the different farm kept giving us the same things week after week--carrots, chard, potatoes--and we're really pleased that Helsing has so much changing variety. Sometimes we have only received something for a week or two and wish we could be getting it for longer! We LOVE the fruit share. Local organic fruit costs us high prices at the Oly farmer's market, but with the fruit share we are getting a great deal. The first few weeks are a little slow when only berries are ready, but after that we get a ton of stone fruit that is delicious and much more bang for our buck than at the farmer's market. For example, one week I was at the market and bought a container of cherries for about $15. A few days later my fruit share gave me the same amount of cherries plus several other pounds of fruit, all for $15 a week. Nice. We get peaches, nectarines, apples, berries, plums, pluots, etc etc We have tried a number of their recipes, and have been impressed. Someone has put a lot of effort into finding recipes that only use the seasonal ingredients that are actually tasty. Everything has been good, and a few have been excellent, such as the recipe for fennel with honey, goat cheese, etc --it's amazing. You can search their recipe database by ingredients. I appreciate that they never leave me hanging for ideas, since with every CSA you get exposed to both old and new ingredients and the recipe help is appreciated.
