My wife and I went last night and had a great time. We love to dance, but I must say that watching the locals dance was over the top insane. They are very good. Security is very tight but it not a problem if your not acting stupid or trying to start trouble. Everyone was very friendly. If your in Corpus Christi and you want to dance this is the place to go. July 5, 2019 (Friday night) -- Went in early right at 8:00pm when they opened. Note that I'm 66 and my dance partner is 57, that's why we go so early. The crowd stayed thin until about 9:30pm when it started to increase. By 10:00pm there was a good size crowd. Dancing from 8:00-10:00pm was fun and the dance floor wasn't crowded. But the music wasn't so great. There was no DJ at that time just a playlist that had already been loaded of so-so songs. Although, having a DJ wouldn't have made any difference since I've never been a fan of their DJ. At 10:00pm things changed a lot. If you don't mind seeing a lesbian dry-hump one girl after another on the dance floor as the crowd cheered her on, then Whiskey River (WR) is your place after 10:00pm. Otherwise, forget about it. We stayed until about 10:30pm just so I could see what really happens there after 10:00pm and so I could give you (my review reader) my observations without bias. At least on this night after 10:00pm the music is all New Country and Hip Hop. Would I recommend WR -- yes, if you go from 8:00-10:00pm. After that it's a freak show. The music from 8:00-10:00pm was mostly traditional style country music but some of the songs were radio songs versus dance hall songs. So what's my credentials? Well, I'm a professional mobile DJ and country-western dance instructor. Music and dancing are what I do. But I'm admittedly old, so keep that in mind as you evaluate my review. Going to WR is about what you like, not what I like. If you're a couples-dancer who enjoys a great atmosphere and good dance floor, then WR is your kind of place between 8:00om and 10:00pm. If you're single or a youngish couple who doesn't mind the freak-show aspect of WR, then by all means go and have fun. read more

My wife and I almost didn't go after reading all of the reviews. But, I'm glad we did!! We had a wonderful time. Music selection was good, temperature was perfect, and the bar service was fine. We arrived at 8 on Saturday night, we were the only ones there for 30 or 45 minutes. Not like what we've experienced at WR in Richmond, TX. We danced a lot of songs and were ready to leave by 10. Oh, one last thing, the volume of the music was fantastic! Loud enough for dancing and low enough to be able to carry on a conversation with my wife. Not my type of scene, small dance floor. But music choice is ok. Bring a dance partner for optimum fun. Drinks are good, Glad that it is non smoking. Friendly atmosphere. A bit loud but if you are looking for a fun night this place is hoping with people of all demographics, you get older all flavors available. read more

So after a previous engagement?? needing a couple more before I call it a night!!! made my way over to Staples!! this is where I would find Whiskey River!!! Front door no issues, made my way inside, place was somewhat packed already, found a table close to the bar?? maybe the reason most of the waitresses didn't pay that much attention?? no matter like I said close to the bar I can get my own drink and tip the bartender!! So the music?? somehow Colt Ford "Hip Hop In A Honky Tonk" comes to mind??with a mix of Country, Tejano, Norteño, Cumbias, and yes Hip Hop?? guess they cater to all genres of music?? so what ever your favorite?? they'll sure play it sooner or later!! read more

I much prefer Whiskey River over other country clubs. The dance floor is big enough for people to dance around and the place is big enough for people to move about. As much as I love crowds and crowded areas, I still love to dance more and would love to have room to dance around. However, there are times when they play other music other than country, such as, hiphop, rap, etc. The workers there are nice and rule abiding people. They also have good deals on drinks on certain days. Other days it's pretty dead. 4 stars for Corpus, but if I were to compare this to Dallas, it would be around 3 stars due to small dance floor and a dirty restroom. read more

Great place to go with friends who are down with a country bar. Great amount of seats and nice dance floor in the middle of it all. Wait at the bar wasn't long at all, the tenders kept on it like donkey kong! Me and my friends showed up at midnight Friday night...uhm I guess that would be Saturday morning, meh anyways. Like I was saying, showed up late and the only thing that seemed out of place with all the cowboy hats and satellite receiving belt buckles was the rap music. Now I'm a fan of all kinds of music but...in a country bar? Even I know that's some kind of sacrilege. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE I went to the WR with my wife and 2 other couples tonight. This was our first visit, (it was also our meeting point for the other two couples) I went outside to make a phone call where it wasn't so loud and when I went to go back inside I tripped over the carpet and the bouncer immediately said I was drunk and banned me from re-entering. I understand the bouncers position so I was polite and did not make a fuss but when I requested to speak with someone in management so they could make a better determination to my level of intoxication they just laughed and said "Get the GF*#@% out of here". I tried one more time to just re-enter without notice but was not successful. This is not our kind of hangout and we will not be recommending this to our friends. read more

Whiskey River has been busted down to a 3 star. I've since moved from the area so naturally I try and get around as much as I can because it's an atmosphere you just can't get in Austin. So laid back and not very many overly pretentious people... just a bunch of folks having a good time. That said. The last couple of times I've gone, they still continue to play way too much rap after midnight. The sets get longer, still! Also the wait for the bar was insane (Approx 15-20 minutes! for 2 beers!). May have been an off night but it's a problem I see with them getting more and more crowded -- yet for some reason closing down all but one register at each bar. Not sure if they are cost cutting or got in trouble. Please add more bartenders! read more

This place is my favorite place to go dancing! Especially Tuesday nights! No cover charge and free dance lessons from abc dancing! Cheap drink specials. I've been coming off an on here for a few years now and definitely enjoy it the most from other places to dance in town. Friday's and Saturday's can get packed and does have some of the more hip hop stuff so if you wanna ballroom or country dance come early or on other days or request songs. The dj is really nice. The bartender and bouncers are also really nice here. read more

In Corpus Christi from out of town and I heard Whiskey River was the place to go on a Wednesday night, dollar drink night!? Sold! We got to the bar after dinner around 9pm and there were only a few locals drinking and two-stepping. I took a couple shots and got a beer and have so far spent only a whopping $8 with the $5 cover charge, this place is awesome! My coworker was drinking Coronas and even those were cheap at a mear $3.25, I feel like California screws me with their high priced over $6 a beer, while gems like this one exist! Also with a DJ named Twinkie how can you really go wrong? We scoped out seats right on the edge of the dance floor so we could learn the local steps and before long a couple of cowboys were asking us to dance. All the guys in the bar were so extremely nice! They taught us how to two step and everyone helped us out with the line dances. Not bad for a couple of CA girls! When the hip hop music came on everyone crowded the floor some the booty shaking. The bar got really packed around 11pm, night and day from an hr earlier. I loved every second of this place and definitely would go back! Be sure to check out the taxidermy raccoon in a mini canoe over the bar. He was my favorite. read more

The dance floor was pretty much empty until 10:00 but it picked up from there and DJ Twinkie was playing great country music that I was content to just sit and sip my $3.50 jack and coke. I'm new to Corpus and wanted to go out dancing and meet some people. I got there at about 11pm on a Saturday. It wasn't too crowded and the dance floor was pretty empty. It filled out as the night went on and was pretty packed by closing. The drinks are reasonable and the bartenders were nice. I'll be returning to Whiskey River. read more

I posted a review once before & see that it was removed. Guess someone at Whiskey River does not like criticism. We love Whiskey River, love the dance floor, love the prices on mixed drinks. We also love the staff. What we don't love is the DJ's choice of music, the extremely loud music, and being too cold all the time. Actually, we can't understand why they even have the DJ ( he must be related to the owner ?). When the dance floor is completely empty, you expect the DJ to see that the crowd does not like that type music, right? This guy plays what he wants to play. My friend paid him $10 to play a song once & he did not play it. Most of the time the songs played on tapes are better than the ones the DJ plays. There are thousands of songs but we hear the same ones every week. And yes, we continue to go there every week - because we like to dance. read more

We are at the damn beach in Corpus Christi and girls are not allowed to wear flip flops or sandals into the bar. Came on a Friday night around 10 with my sister and a group of friends. Some of the people in the group were under 21 so the bouncers at the door kept the ID's of minors. When we left around 1, my sister had to go retrieve her ID to which she found one of the bouncers waiting at the door with it in hand. He pulled her aside and told her that since she's transgender and her ID still said male on it, she wouldn't be allowed to return ever. I asked if anyone had complained, seeing as how she was with us the whole time and he said "no, Its company policy. Owners rules. We just noticed it a little too late." Never seen an establishment operate with such disgust. They single handedly discriminated against someone who did nothing wrong. Never returning. read more

I went on $1 night not so $1 I never started a tab with the fear of leaving my card I ran 3 transactions and was with one other person the 1st was $3 second was $2 3rd was a $3 transaction that somehow got charged $33. I have called several times and left messages and still have not been contacted. My fiancé had told me he refuses to go there because this has also happened to him not once but twice and a friend of his and they were able to get a hold of the manager and were told to bad they couldn't reverse it . I will never go back I would rather pay full price for drinks than to be stolen from I can not stand thieves. read more

I have enjoyed coming to Whiskey River with my friends for a few years now but I have always paid cash for drinks. Word of advice to EVERYONE that goes there. Only pay cash, do NOT start a tab, especially at the back bar by the DJ booth. I went on dollar drink night and started out with cash, tipping them every time I got a drink and then when I didn't have any more cash I opened a tab. I only had a few drinks on the tab, they have a $5 credit tab requirement so I made sure to spend that amount and then I closed it and tipped them $5 for a total of $10. The bartender did not give me a customer copy of the credit card receipt which should have been my first red flag. The next day I was looking at my bank balance and the charge from Whiskey River said $30 not $10, the bartender decided to add himself an extra $20 on top of my 100% tip, despite the fact I had been tipping cash all night as well. I have been a server and bartender for 7 years and I have never done this to a customer and the people who do are despicable and give us all a bad name. read more

my friends cleared off empty drinks from an empty table & as I was about to sit & join them this lady comes over & grabs my arm & stops me & then start yelling at us about how we cant sit here because is occupied by regulars who have been here since noon; mind you that its 11pm on a Saturday nite I mean put a reserved sign then. How rude & it turns out this is the manager named Linda. Who speaks to people like this & we were not in poor appearance purchased a round of cocktails prior to this incident & that is why I don't care to spend my money on this establishment because they are rude & behave in a ghetto manner.the place is run down looking, bar service is slow & the staff is far from friendly especially management.
