Stopped by after work around 3 pm for some chili dogs and were told they were out of chili (as was their other location, which we stopped by afterwards). This is apparently a common occurrence with both locations, because they don't seem to know how to make extra batches of chili to last the day. Since this seems to happen every day (or at least, has happened to us 4 of the last 5 times we've gone to this location), you think they'd get a clue and stop losing out on paying customers who decide to go elsewhere. read more

Whippy Dip is obviously a classic ice cream stand in Erie. I grew up coming here. The brownie sundaes used to be my jam, but now I'm gluten free and can't enjoy that delicious treat. There's a ton of different options between sundaes, milkshakes, their special blizzard type concauction (I can't remember the technical name) and flavored soft serve. I was bummed because their flavor of the month for soft serve was banana, which... not my thing. But they have a few other flavors offered. I opted with a regular strawberry milkshake. They have syrup to flavor milkshakes too, but I was just a little nervous that they weren't gluten free. When I asked the employee if they knew or if they had a list of ingredients handy they seemed annoyed and said they didn't know and couldn't look for me. I am not trying to be a diva, I literally just cannot eat gluten because it makes me sick. So that was semi-annoying. I realize it's an old school spot, but this is 2020 and you should know what allergens you carry. Regardless, I'll go back and just hope for a better soft serve flavor next time. read more

Been going to the original 26th Street location for years. Today will be our last time. My wife and 2 boys stopped on way home after a beautiful day at Presque Isle and all ordered ice cream sundaes. I got mine last which was supposed to be a PB&J sundae (PB ice cream with strawberries). As soon as I took it I realized they gave me a chocolate sundae with peanut butter sauce. So I stood in line and informed the girl working there I was given the wrong sundae. She ignored my concerns. I then flag down the owner and explain situation to her. The owner then asks the girl working the counter what I ordered. The girl tells owner I ordered what I received and the owner refuses to do anything. What happened to customer service? What happened to the customer is always right? We were actually planning to buy my younger boy a Whippy Dip T shirt. Instead I left my uneaten paid-for wrong order on their counter. Plenty more ice cream stands that provide service with a smile. read more

I always want to support Local but it's very hard when you get the wrong order bring it to the owners attention and she is super rude about it... I've been talking about going there all this week to get the peanut butter banana twist dipped in chocolate- my friend ordered before me She turned around and said they don't have it. I said it's right there on the board. She then placed her order telling me that it had to be stacked. I was totally confused because if you have the twist, why would it need stacked? I get up there next. I literally say I want the special the peanut butter banana twist dipped in chocolate upside down in a bowl I get my order I take literally three bites and I can see and taste that it is chocolate banana that they gave me not peanut butter I take out the window the rude owner then tells me I ate most of it lol... you own this place right? You cant just make me another one when it was your mistake? Their stuff is already over priced so I guess I can see her not wanting to lose her four dollars but that's OK. Some of the best soft serve I've ever had! I lived around the corner from this place for a couple of months, and found it pretty difficult not to end up eating dinner here every night! It's a simple drive thru layout, the kind of place that probably hasn't changed much in the fifty years since it's stood on the corner. The service is to the point but not unfriendly, and the menu is pretty basic. They have the usual flavors, like chocolate and vanilla, as well as a "flavor of the week" which is usually something a bit more offbeat and creative. The taste is everything I want out of a soft serve cone - creamy, custardy, and delicious. To top it off, prices here can't be beat! read more

I am an ice cream fanatic. Today was my first trip to Whippy Dip and I wasn't disappointed. There are not many places in Erie that offer soft serve ice cream. Today I ordered a small vanilla soft serve with rainbow sprinkles. I got a generous amount of ice cream. The cone was slightly lopsided, but it is still early in the season, there is ample time to perfect the cones. The ice cream was coated in sprinkles, just the way I like it, but much to my dismay, I was only given 2 purple sprinkles. I left the counter feeling a little bit gypped but excited to taste the ice cream nonetheless. Great flavor! Great sprinkles! I have had creamier soft serves, but this hit the spot. Much better than DQ. Looking forward to going back, tomorrow. read more

As an enthusiasts of classic roadside ice cream stands, Whippy Dip ranks high in my book. They are located smack dab in the middle of Erie's Eastside. If you don't live in the neighborhood there may not seem to be a reason to travel to WD, but I always find myself going out of the way to get a treat there several times each summer. They offer standard soft serve and normally have a sherbet twist flavor, which is somewhat unique. The multiple toppings they offer are traditional and wonderful, especially the "crunch coat or twinkle coat" as some call it. As all Erie ice cream stands seem to do, they offer Smith's hotdogs as part of their grill menu. There simply is no better hot dog so that is a huge win. Despite any crowds that may gather on a hot weekend night, the young staff is always courteous and efficient. Whippy Dip is the quintessential summer ice-cream stand. read more

I grew up going to the Dip for icecream. They have soft serve and several coatings you can put on them. My favorite coating is the crinkle coat. Can't tell you what is in it, but it is delicious. They have sundaes and other treats, but we come for the big cones. Oh, and occasionally we will get the footlong chili cheese dogs. Mmmmmmm. read more
