But no, while patrons of Heavenly Desserts may be dressed to the nines, this dessert bar necessitates elastic trousers more than a "go out shirt". Heavenly Desserts was one of the originators of the type of dessert bar that has popped up all over Birmingham in recent years. Starting out in a smaller shop front, they now take up a very large location in Sparkbrook that can seat many. Despite this, the place is packed with queues on the weekend. The wait is managed very professionally by an army of staff members. Once you make it to your seat, a literal bible of sweet goodies awaits. The shop is most known for their outrageous waffles and cookie dough, but it's entirely possible to pop in for some gelato and a coffee. This is exactly what I did while visiting with friends recently, as the cookie dough was tempting but I wanted something smaller. The gelato can be purchased on its own, but it's also a key ingredient in their other dessert dishes. I was hoping for the best based on reviews, but my cookies and creme/chocolate combo was average at best. Given the amount of competition in Brum, the gelato was not up to par with a generic flavour present. The Americano I ordered as my drink was substantial in size, but lacked finesse in its pull, with a bitter, acidic quality. The overall service here is spot on, with our waiter checking on us throughout our visit. Paying was a hassle though, as we had to walk to the back end of the shop and pay at a card kiosk. Speaking of, the prices here are at the upper limit of what you can realistically charge, especially since it's not in city centre. Heavenly Desserts is a nice dessert shop for the most part, but if you are looking for high quality ingredients or a low-mid price point, south Brum has many more options for you.

I love gelato. Specifically, I love lemon gelato, which I had for the first time in Rome and have…read moresince also experienced in Malaga. I love the strong taste of lemon and the sharpness to the flavour that leaves nothing but joy in your mouth. As such I was excited to have the gelato here for the first time, since London Road's a lot closer to me than Rome or Malaga! Unfortunately, the gelato is really very meh. I had the fleur de lait on top and the lemon on the bottom of my £3, two scoop cone. The fleur de lait was good, and I enjoyed it, but the lemon was really very disappointing. It was far too sweet; the flavour should be far sharper than it was. It had a fairly weak taste with no real punch and it left a curious taste in my mouth. To give an example of how disappointing it was, it actually took me a couple of mouthfuls to realise that the flavour I was eating was lemon and not the fleur de lait! Ultimately, this place got me very excited, but in all honesty I don't think I'd recommend a visit.

When the server was scooping the ice cream she hesitated to serve a decent amount and left half in the tub, like she felt that giving the equivalent of what I paid for was going to bankrupt them. I felt ripped off, as I also had to pay an extra £0.25 to use my debit card. Why couldn't she just be a decent human being and serve me a decent amount? £2.85 for less than 100ml of ice cream is ridiculous, they can call it gelato but it isn't, and even if it was I'm from Italy so I know exactly what gelato is and it doesn't cost that much. A 500ml tub of Carte D'or on the Sainsbury's up the road was just £2, and the taste was about the same, the difference is that 500ml equals 10 generous scoops, so you get the gist. Joke of a place, will never step into it again, and now it makes sense why they want you to pay before ordering, that's because they know you'd walk away after seeing the tiniest amount that they serve you.
