I went here with a mate to test the waters, so to speak, in preparation for organising a Christmas meal for the society I help run. All in all I was pleasantly surprised - not only was the food very good, but the prices are lower than the other all-you-can-eat Chinese restaurant nearby and the food, in my opinion, is nicer. The starters are roughly the same as the starters you get at other such restaurants: present and correct was the sesame prawn toast, the fried chicken wings, the crispy aromatic duck (with pancakes), the spring rolls and the dumplings. The mains, too, are fairly run-of-the-mill for such an establishment, with a range of options covering chicken, prawn, pork and the like and a range of tastes from sweet and sour to curry via black bean sauce. However, the devil is in the detail and they were all brilliantly executed (except for the lemon chicken, by which we were slightly disappointed). I was also impressed that the rice ran out much less often than you'd usually expect and I was also pleasantly startled by the availability of sushi and similar things in the buffet, which went down very well. In addition to all that, there was a teriyaki bar where you could get things cooked to order with your choice of sauce (although I was so full after sampling the extensive buffet I didn't get a chance to try it!). For pudding there were fritters available and a freezer full of tubs of proper ice cream to go with it, unlike some restaurants' desserts which are just sundaes kept ready in a huge freezer or a Mr. Whippy-style ice cream dispenser on the side with some marshmallows. I always appreciate a restaurant doing desserts that aren't just different arrangements of chocolate and icecream! All in all, I had a wonderful evening and I can't wait for round two later in the semester. read more

Chinese buffet. Pretty big and more expensive than other buffets in town although the food is essentially the same so I wouldn't go there unless someone else was paying! It's based downstairs so look carefully so you don't miss the entrance, which sports a (recently beheaded) terracotta warrior. It's clean and light, although the tables are as characteristically crowded as all these places are in Leicester. Wide choice of food, although finding the rice can be a bit challenging for some reason, however, as I say, especially at lunch go to the place on High Street - it's half the price for the same quality and service. read more

A large chinese buffet restaurant. It is at basement level so there is no natural light but it is well lit and has a cosy feel. There is an extensive selection of dishes, including an area for freshly cooking meat, and sushi etc. The staff are always very helpful and friendly, and the price is quite reasonable though for a big family it ends up actually being very expensive (about £60+ for a family with 4 children) so only special occasions for us! read more

'Chinese Pick n Mix' Like most 'all you can eat' Chinese Buffet venues 'Terracotta' gains mixed reviews but in general I have rarely ever been here and gone away with anything other than a positive feel based on the experience and quality. All fast moving asian buffet places have their down moments when food items run out, some trays dry up or overheat or go cold or are lacking in choice or where utensils and counters are not kept clean but I have been going to Terracotta now for well over a decade I think without seeing these happen very often. Generally I have always been reasonably impressed here compared to many other similar concept buffet places. The entrance off Highcross St Leicester presents a quality image and the interior is clean and smart and modern in design with some nice touches like the glass wall 'waterfall'. The buffet area itself is quite small and can be pretty crowded at busy times.Bar service is good and they have my favourite Tsing Tao bottled beer. Food is a typical mix of chinese buffet items, small tepanyaki chef grill, and small sushi selection with salads and soups, and a varied selection. This isn't on the scale of Cosmo and is even smaller than BIG Wok in Birmingham but is modern and of generally good to medium quality for the modest price, but from reviews and experience this can vary slightly depending on how busy, and at what time you go. I have been here over many years for lunches and dinner with a variety of partners and companions, including a thai lady with two young daughters and an african companion, and everyone liked the food. There are often birthday parties and kids parties here so if you don't like a lively (and noisy) set of companions in a smallish venue it's best to check on this beforehand as this can make or break your experience. In Leicester this easily beats some of the lesser quality food experiences I have had in one or two buffet venues in London's Gerrard Street Chinese quarter. I haven't been here much this year 2012 however so recent reviews might be more topical. read more

More choices if you go for the evening compared to the afternoon, however the food at both times is delicious. Teppan yaki food is great. Sun Lik Chinese beer on tap which tastes great. Would highly recommend for good food and good prices. read more

Perfectly pleasant, amazing before a night out to line your stomach!

Looking at the menu from outside my partner and myself decided to give this place a shot, walked down into the basement with open minds. We met a rather unfriendly greeting and were promptly seated as to what i can only describe as McDonalds pre its fancy refit style interior. Drinks ordered we decided to try and navigate our way to the self service food area, which was very difficult as everyone seemed highly squashed into an amazingly bad layout of tables. Once we overcome this and finally reached the buffet we were faced with empty and cold food containers, dirty cutlery and little choice. The staff were very unfriendly. Its no wonder the teppanyaki was so busy as this seemed the only way to get warm food. Both of us only managed half a plate of starters which all tasted of garlic and were absolutely disgusting and cold, before we made a complaint to the manager and left. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, avoid at all costs! read more
