I am disgusted by the customer service provided to my 79 year old disabled father. Last year he bought a gift card of £500 to accommodate our family's Christmas meal on December 1st, travelling up from Brighton to visit a restaurant we have visited many times in the past. We had a wonderful meal last December, we had £52.85 left on the gift card. My father tried to call again last week to book another table for 13th December, hoping to use to remainder of the gift card to use towards the next table and was told the gift card expires after one year. He offered to use the gift card towards pre-paying for the entire meal, and was told this wasn't possible. For the sake of 12 days, my family will not be revisiting. My family travel hours from the South East to visit this restaurant, we have left generous gratuities over the years and to be told on the phone that our gift card will not be honoured less than 2 weeks after its expiry tells me that this company is.... I would avoid this restaurant if you value loyalty and expect the customer service which this company prides itself on. 1 out of 5 stars, we will never be returning over this. You have lost a valuable customer who, despite having a major physical disability, was extremely excited to travel 160 miles to enjoy a meal here again. read more

This experience was a mixed bag. Restaurant is really pretty. It comes off fairly fancy and a little pretentious. There is a whole lemon on every table. I asked a server about it and she didn't know why they do that; she said maybe it is an Italian thing. We had three servers and it wasn't clear if there was a main one. We ordered drinks from a girl. I ordered a glass of Cabernet and my husband ordered double expresso. She could not understand my order (even after I said it a few times and even said Cabernet red wine), maybe I have an American accent. The male server came over and asked if I wanted Chardonnay, so I had to clarify. The wine and expresso were fine though. The pitcher of tap water comes with lemon in it and my husband prefers water with no lemon. We ordered the focaccia to start. It is on their pizza bread with olive oil and herbs. The crust is good, but it was way too salty for me. For dinner, I had Rigatoni alla Norma, which was very good with fresh tomatoes, eggplant, cheese, etc. The portion is small, but enough for me. I really enjoyed this dish. My husband ordered the chicken special, which was a flattened, breaded chicken with three roasted tomatoes, lemon and thyme on the side. You had to use the tomato, lemon and thyme on the chicken to provide flavor and moisture for the chicken. It was good all together. It was clear that it was expected to order a side item with the chicken, so he opted for mixed vegetables. I didn't realize this is a chain and wouldn't have chosen a chain. This Italian eaterie is part of a small chain, which seem to get good reviews. The overall appearance of this branch is good, and the menu is a good mixture of fixed items and menu of the day selections. The food was well presented and tasty. A chain of Italian restaurant and winner of numerous awards, the San Carlo is always a safe bet. The Leicester branch is my particular favourite and has had the pleasure of my repeated visits. Authentic Italian food - the risotto's are particularly flavoursome - served in a good looking joint. Diners are spoilt for choice here, as this place offers the luxury of a substantial menu and wine list. Prices are reasonable, though certainly not cheap. A fool-proof option if you fancy fine Italian dining. read more

San Carlo is hands down one of the best restaurants in Leicester. This is not just my opinion, but I'm posting this on behalf of the group of 12 I ate there with the other night. They have extremely welcoming employees based out of Italy, to the 10/10 quality of fresh authentic Italian food. The best part is that the prices are all very reasonable! I visited San Carlo for my birthday and although the food and service was impressive the place was expensive and didn't have the best atmosphere. The place was quite cold which was a shame. It was crowded and I think they have crammed a couple too many tables in, it was also a bit pretentious for my liking. Having said that they did make a big effort. They forgot to cook one meal and instantly offered a free drink all round, the missing meal appeared in minutes. They overheard it was my birthday and turned the lights down, brought over a desert containing a sparkler and everyone sang happy birthday bit embarrassing but nice all the same. So top marks for effort but I wouldn't be rushing back for the prices or the coldness! read more

The menu is very authentic. The staff are very Italian and the choice of different dishes is delightful I find the food is always good and is served very well, with presentation on the plates being importnat to San Carlos It can get quite busy and I notice a good mix of couples and firends with large tables - often corporate and business. The only issue with san CARLOS IS PRICE - ITS NOT CHEAP - and I guess thats why corporate is so improtant to them. I'm a bit confused by the mediocre reviews of this restaurant. I've never had anything but a perfect meal here. The staff are extremely attentive and professional, they make you feel like a VIP. Everyone is Italian, and they obviously care a great deal about their food, this is a truly authentic Italian restaurant. I'm a pasta girl and the quality of the dishes, especially the seafood, is incredible, and NOT expensive. Around £10 for a main? And always something new and interesting on the specials board. Main dishes such as the veal and steak are obviously more expensive, but I wouldn't say above average? Certainly not for the quality. In fact everyone I've ever taken here has been happily surprised by the bill! The only truly expensive part of the meal is the wine, but that is to be expected at most good restaurants these days. As a great quality, authentic Italian restaurant, even the house wine is delicious, so there's no real need to go crazy. Also, expect a shot of Limoncello at the end of the meal, on the house. That's just the way things are done here ;) I would say this is the best restaurant in Leicester, and often do. Try it, you won't be disappointed. read more

San Carlo is an italian place which is a gorgous looking place. The exterior is all glass and it is filled with blue lights which just goes so well. (the review is writing my experience my pros and cons are all written together i will restate the cons in the con box as well.) When i went here i must say we were waiting a while before we were even seated to be served, in the meanwhile we had to wait by the bar, however this is due to the place being excessivly busy and not because the place is too small to incorparate a fair number of people. When we were eventually seated the place had a variety of italien foods like lasagane, pasta pizza etc. We eventually got served and again the service was fairly slow just due to the fact that they were really busy ( and to be fair they usually are always busy) . When the food came it was very nice and the food was hot which is crucial to me. Overall the waiting times were very long and the prices were quite steep but atleast the food was good. read more

Dinner with 12 friends, I enjoyed my food but the overall experience wasn't the best. A drink I had ordered didnt arrived though appeared on the bill so we requested it to be removed. My Bf took me here as we were staying at the Mecure Grande hotel for the weekend for my birthday. Food: The food was excellent. I really cannot fault that. The portions were great. We had starter and a surprise shared pasta. The starter was priced perfectly for the portions we got. Although it was slightly too oiled but mouth watering delicious. Loved it. Service: Terrible terrible terrible!!! There was a man who would greet guest in or show them to their tables. He was just a very rude man. He would shout at his waitresses across the room in Italian. Literally across the dining room. So unprofessional! Our waitress was about to take our order when he shouted at her to go somewhere else despite him knowing fair well she was about to take our order as he was only 2 feet away from our table. We were rather shocked, no apology or anything! Or even to send another waitress. I asked the waitress to clarify if the ice cream was italian creamy ice cream as she wasn't sure. He eventually came over to me and just said "it's Italian. You can believe us or not". I laughed at him and frowned but it had no affect whatsoever as he just walked off. Another greeter came over to hand us our bill after we asked for the second time and were kept waiting for 15 minutes. We told him we don't want to pay the service charge but he just walked off with no apology nor did he try to ask why we weren't happy with the service charge. The receptionist came over and gave us another bill without the service charge. Their walls are plastered with pictures of the owners with celebrities who have visited the restaurant. I could tell by the way some of the other guests were greeted, some seemed to be locals by the sound of it, was completely different to how we were greeted. I got the feeling that if somebody who was a celebrity or somebody who looked like they had lots of money walked through the doors the greeters would greet them with such more respect and patience. I came here one day with some of 3 of my friends and the bill was outrageous. Over £100 and the food we recieved didnt even seem worth that much. The pizza and pasta was average. Nothing special. Looks good and has the requisite brisk, businesslike air, complete with maitre d' ordering his minions around. I ordered a quite pricey bottle of red and was immediately directed to one at three times that price - hmm! I think that the staff thought we were tourists and fair game for the run-around; my wife's linguine alle vongole did not contain much in the way of shellfish.
