    Whighams was recommended by the concierge at the Sheraton Grand as a spot less frequented by tourists with a chill vibe and a solid selection of whiskeys. Whighams lived up to its billing. A nice chill venue off the beaten path with a good number of locals. The staff was incredibly friendly. They were also quite knowledgeable when it came to selecting a proper whiskey. Overall a great choice for a chill evening and I would certainly go back

    This restaurant / wine bar is very conveniently located in the West End / Princes street. Easy to get to. we reserved a table of 7 people. This was a Saturday and they were fully booked - so 9 pm was the earliest we could sit down that day. This place is a fish food haven, loads of varieties of different kinds of fish and seafood dishes. Less so on the meat and vegetarian options. Starter for me was grilled langoustines, conveniently cut open already and long lobster forks provided. Out of the 7 of us we had 4 steaks for mains. I have to say that those were very well prepared, Mine actually came a little later as I ordered a meat gravy in addition, and I am pleased they accommodated that request. It is a little pricy, but the quality of the food and service reflect this. I'd be happy to return here.

    This place is awesome!!! When I made the reservation, I requested a table near the stage for Sunday Jazz night. When we got there, the waitress sat us in front of the stage. We could not have asked for a better table. Our reservation was for 7:45 and the band was setting up when we got there. They started playing at exactly 8pm. What a night we had! The evening was filled with wonderful live jazz and delicious food & drinks. My husband and I started by sharing the seafood platter. Holy cow! We were visiting from Boston, Massachusetts and we know our seafood. Whigham's seafood platter was amazing! The most delicious, sweet oysters and clams we've ever had. The Langoustine......Oh my god, I could've had 20 more! For entrees, we both ordered prawn linguine. Previous to ordering, I mentioned to the waitress that I didn't like spicy food. She told us that the sauce was pre-made and it would be a little spicy, but she would give me a little ramekin of some sort of white cream sauce to mix my pasta with. To be honest, I was skeptical about this, but it worked! By mixing that cream sauce to my linguine, it made it into a vodka cream sauce (without the vodka) and lessen the spiciness. It was pretty darn good. We had a couple of different servers and both were professional & attentive. The Jazz band was superb! The singer was this young woman, and she had this voice that sounded like smooth vintage wine. If you're planning on dining here and you love jazz, make your reservation on the nights they have live jazz night. You won't be disappointed.

    If you're cooked when it comes to traditional Scottish pubs and want to try a wine bar with tapas, here's a hint: Read my review. It's in a basement, where it's very dark and cozy and romantic. Bring a date...bring a couple of dates...bring lots and lots of dates. I think the vibe is still chill enough for you to also bark it up with your pals. I saw crews in here, cold yappin. The bartenders are accommodating and cute as hell. As for the wine (Rioja - Spain), it was mad cheap and tasty, the prawns and crayfish were deelish and the toffee dessert, ohfuhfuckssake...just lovely. Lovely. One more time, lovely.

    This is one of my favourite finds in the city!! And what a find! Hidden away in the depths of Charlotte Square, this place doesn't look like much. It's got such a lovely, authentic atmosphere though, really genuine and comforting. It's really traditional and a great place to come if you would like a relaxing, authentic atmosphere. Yes it's a bit cave-like, but it's an experience! When you go (which you will) you won't be disappointed, and you'll be back (alongside Arnold)

Behind the bar Cargo, the small canal harbour plays host to the most fantastic experience in the festival. The school has run for the last 2 years and I have attended both years. Listed in the festival timetable, you can book online or just turn up on the day (assuming it's not sold out). Every day a different tasting and learning experience is to be had on board a canal boat, dependent on your choice there is white wine tasting, red wine tasting, sparkling wines, rum and chocolate and whisky tasting. Of course you don't have to spit it out. It's only when you leave the boat that you realise it wasn't just the movement of the water that was making you sway!

For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. Highly recommend a visit to the Devil's Advocate, if you can book a table in advance.

But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. Located in an old Victorian pump house halfway up (or down) Advocate's Close, the Devil's Advocate is known for a killer whisky shelf of more than 300 different bottles from various distilleries across the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Campbelltown, the Islands, and Islay. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.

Decor wise, at the moment it's still very similar to its predecessor (which is by no means a bad thing), but with a few of their own twists (wine crates, casks etc.) and I imagine it'll become a bit more personal and unique as they find their feet. We stopped by last night for a bite to eat. At the moment the menu is very limited, just three starters (all on sourdough toast), three mains and a cheeseboard. Kip S went for fried chorizo to start (he can't see chorizo on a menu and not order it) and I opted for garlic mushrooms and spinach on toast. Neither was wildly exciting, but they were well executed and tasty. For main course there's the option of plaice, steak or a vegetarian option that I don't remember. We both went for steak, which was served with yet more mushrooms and spinach, and some new potatoes. Again, not exciting, but done well and more than satisfying. There are some really interesting wines on offer too, with 5 by the glass so far, including an Austrian red and an Australian orange. The owner was happy to make recommendations (including 'fessing up that he thought one of the reds was underpriced, which is surely something he could rectify if he wanted to), and we were both pleased with our selections. A word on that actually, the owner and his staff were lovely, very keen to offer advice and check we were having a good time. Good Brothers is very, very new, but it's showing promise and it deserves to be on your radar.

I've had my suspicions about the name for a while and tonight, my suspicions were confirmed- this idea was formulated in Melbourne, the bright light-bulb flashing into the owners mind whilst sipping a glass of wine on the iconic corner of Smith Street and Gertrude Streets in Melbourne. The hipster trend is spreading globally people! And you know what? I'm on board! The service, ambiance and style so reminds me of my hometown (whats that I feel...pride?) This might just become the place for meat, wine and cheese. For the past year Henri's of Stockbridge has been my go-to for my Sunday wine and charcuterie but Smith and Gertrude will closely rival this. So lets talk wine. The list is extensive and impressive. I'm actually not too much for Australian wine myself, but the list of Australian wines available almost made me want to yell out 'woo! represent!' but I didn't do that because I'm a grown up of course. I instead ordered a lovely Argentinian wine at the recommendation of our very helpful server which paired the meal nicely. Meats and cheese. Well. I feel like there could have been more on the board (or maybe have smaller boards so it looks fuller?) Nonetheless, whilst it looked simple to begin with, the mixed board was more than enough for two people, though I did add the gorgonzola cheese along with bread with oil with dukkah. All delicious but not foreign to me. The cheese is sourced locally and I buy it all weekly so I essentially paid to have it plated and to eat it somewhere with better lighting. If you don't know cheese, then you might enjoy the ever-changing cheeses to try until you find a favourite. Then you can go buy it in bulk from the local cheesemongers if you so wish. The interior is very trendy and Melbourne-like. The atmosphere, quality of food and service was nothing short of great. . If you're really just wanting the meat and cheese without the ooze of hipster-mess, I would suggest the buying the cheese and meats from local stockists. Thy also stock wines which I will certainly return to purchase. I give five stars as a fellow Melburnian seething with pride for this new local business. They've taken a simple concept and done it well, using local product and supporting other small businesses which I highly commend. Highly recommended for a place to just sit, eat, chill and plain enjoy, whether alone or with company. The only thing that was missing was the excellent barista-made coffee I have come to adore from Melbourne (read: its the minimum standard I expect.) Steampunk in a french press guys, really? I'll keep an eye out on this development and will probably move in when this changes.

If you had visited the cat cafe previously, this new venture has more or less gutted the place and it's unrecognizable. They've done a great job with the room, with lots of wood detailing, vintage inspired knick knacks and communal seating... it's basically a hipster coffee shop, but with wine. Eye roll all you want, that's a damn good combination of trendy. I only had two glasses on my first trip here, so I can't speak to the food or the flights, but the wine (though pricey... ack!) was interesting and the wine flights that went past us, with four little glasses and the option to pair with cheese almost had us falling off our seats to get a better look. Well worth heading back for more investigation. So far, I deem this place a cute little addition the the neighbourhood. Welcome Smith & Gertrude!

Le Di-Vin is all about wine exploration, so if you're the kind of person that likes to try two or three different wines of an evening, or possibly more, then this would be a good place to start. You can get pretty much every wine sold here by the glass, bonus, because it can be really annoying if you venture somewhere and there are about two wines sold by the glass, none of which you're keen on. There are times when ordering a bottle of white wine to yourself is not a good idea...actually, you should probably never do that, because it's probably classed as a cheeky bit of binge drinking. With more than 60 wines to choose from, this is an extensive and really well varied menu. You could also add to the Frenchness by ordering a cheese board or some charcuterie items, and the bar serves other light bites. Le Di-Vin has gone for a traditional, fairly relaxed look, so it's not one of those wine bars that's overly polished and too stylised for you to feel comfortable and enjoy yourself. The bar area looks great, with the wine bottles stacked to the rafters, and there's a fair bit of table space, plus a small mezzanine floor.
